Hebron is being taken over by Israeli settlers piece by piece. Israeli soldiers patrol its streets, checkpoints divide Palestinian neighbourhoods, and daily life is shaped by the realities of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
In this documentary, I travelled to Hebron at the end of 2022 to understand how Hebron became a hotbed of settler extremism. From the 1929 Palestinian riots and the end of the historic Jewish community in Hebron, to the rise of the modern Israeli settlement movement and the founding of Kiryat Arba, the first Israeli settlement beside the city, I explore how Hebron was shaped by the Oslo Accords, Israeli military occupation, and the divisions between H1 and H2. This film traces the history that turned Hebron into a microcosm of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
As I travelled alone through the occupied West Bank by bicycle, I met Palestinian activists from Youth Against Settlements, moved through Israeli settler areas under military protection, and witnessed the realities faced by both communities living side by side under entirely different legal systems: Israeli civil law for settlers and Israeli military law for Palestinians.
While this is the story of Hebron, it has also been repeated in different forms across the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank.
