How to graduate college early in 3 years? I'll go through the 7 reasons I was able to graduate early in 3 years with my civil engineering degree. Feel free to add me on instagram: @kikoga
1. I had a direction
To graduate college early, you need to have a direction. For me, I was good math and physics and my dad was civil engineer so that helped give me an idea of what that profession meant. Also, freshman year since UW is a big school and doesn't take attendance in all their classes, I sat in on the upper level civil engineering lectures to see if the material would be interesting to me. You will need to get your pre requisite courses in place to apply for your major in a lot of cases. If you want to graduate college early, you really need to have it figured out in the first year. If you don’t have direction and If financially strapped look for cheaper schools to find your way and then transfer, don't waste your money at an expensive school trying to figure it out.
2. I had AP classes for credits
I came into UW with around 40 credits which helped me a lot when trying to get my prerequisites completed. When you're trying to decide which college to go to, do research on whether schools take your AP course credits or not. When trying to graduate early, the more you can do in high school, the better
3. I was lucky in registration
At a large university, you need to be a little lucky and a little quick when registering for your classes. If I didn’t get my exact schedule I wouldn’t have had all the classes and been able to apply to my major. Research and be ready with all your plans at registration, I used my phone and data to register just to get off the schools network while everyone else was on it.
4. Took a lot of credits
Even with AP's I needed to 18-20 credits a quarter (trimester if not doing summer) to cover the regular coursework plus the general education requirements for credits
5. My learning style matched the college system
UW was a quarter system like high school, classes were quick hit, a few months of material. That matches the way I study and what I was used to. So taking on the greater course load wasn't too bad for me because it went along with how I learn and study.
6. Great Teachers and Classmates
I was lucky that the faculty in the civil engineering department were so helpful and my classmates as well. I couldn’t have handled that load on my own it was nice to collaborate; that’s how it is in the world anyway. The network you build (one of the great things about college) is important and it’s great to learn from others.
7. Did internships/Get Experience
Quite frankly besides financial benefit, graduating early doesn’t make sense unless you have a job waiting for you at the end. My internship is the reason I have the job I do now and I really believe that you don’t know a career unless you do it. This can also help you on your path to figuring out what you want to do. It can be tempting the first year to just relax in the summer, but especially if you don’t know what you want to do its so important to get that clarity because you only have a few tries until you’re locked into your degree.
