How to crochet quick star coasters. At only 12 yards of yarn per coaster, the Seeing Stars Coasters are great for scraps of yarn, and a variety of projects too if you want to use them as appliques or join them together.
These coasters are the perfect piece to add to your living room, kitchen or dining room to house a delicious cup of coffee.

You'll need 12 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn. In the video, I'm using Lion Brand Local Grown Cotton in the Apple Pie colorway, and in my original set of coasters, I've used Lily Sugar n Cream in the White, Red and Dazzling Blue colorways. You'll also need a H8/5mm Crochet Hook, and a Tapestry Needle to weave in ends.
Material Notes:
Originally, I did use Lily Sugar n Cream for these coasters, but I really like using colorfast yarns, which mean the colors are set, and Lion Brand Local Grown Cotton, WeCrochet Dishie and Berroco Pima 100 are! While cotton is a bit more durable and absorbent, but you can use any worsted weight yarn out of your stash! I have a few coasters I’ve made myself using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, which is a 100% acrylic yarn. A hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers, and while it doesn’t quite absorb the same way with cold beverages, it still holds the water and does not seep through to the surface. Lion Brand Wool Ease is another lovely yarn for coasters that I have used for some in my personal collection, and the wool adds to the durability and absorbency.

While gauge is not essential for this project, just keep in mind as you are substituting yarns the diameter for your cup to sit on. With the worsted weight cotton yarn, it's about 2 1/4" in diameter so if you wanted to use a lighter weight yarn, I might recommend holding 2 or 3 strands together. Synthetic yarns like Red Heart Super Saver usually produce a tighter and smaller fabric, so you may want to go up to an I9/5.5mm crochet hook. Alternatively, you could easily go up to a Chunky Weight #5 Yarn like Lion Brand Hue and Me.

Measurements:
- Space for Cup: 2 1/4″
- Total from one point across to another: 4″
Gauge - Diameter taken after Round 2:
- Before cinching beginning ring: Just over 2"
- After cinching beginning ring: 1 7/8″
Note: Gauge is not necessarily essential, but keep in mind the diameter size for your cup to comfortably sit on.
