How did life emerge from non-life, and how much of that mystery have scientists actually solved already? The origin of life is one of the last great gaps creationists love to point to, but most people have no idea how many pieces of that puzzle are already sitting on the table.
You are a colony of roughly 37.2 trillion cells running on the same chemistry as every organism on Earth, from chimps to lemurs to single-celled euglena. This series digs into abiogenesis, the theory that simple chemicals can naturally bond into organic molecules, organize into evolving cells, and eventually produce something as ridiculous as you. Along the way we look at Friedrich Wöhler ending vitalism by synthesizing urea in 1828, Martin Hanczyc's responsive protocells, and Craig Venter's team building a synthetic genome and stripping a living cell down to 473 genes.
I first made this series in 2018 (titled: The Story of Life). I discontinued it because I lacked the resources at the time to make it viable. Eight years later, I realized a lot of the gaps I covered back then have quietly closed, so I'm rebuilding the series from the ground up with better research, better sources, and a team that can actually keep up with the biochemistry. This episode lays the foundation: what cells are, what they're made of, and why "life is just chemistry" is not a slogan but a lab result. The next episode gets into which steps from chemistry to cell have already been recreated in simulations of early Earth.
