The Center for Civic Design works with both election officials and voting advocates to research the role of design in voter engagement and trust. In 2023, we set off to dig deep into the role that aesthetics and information design play in voter education materials made by get-out-the-vote groups like the Ohio Voter Rights Coalition. Our research asked: How can visual design and cultural relevance impact voter engagement and foster trust among diverse communities in Ohio? We found that visual and information design can either invite people into the democratic process (bringing from the margins into the center), or push them away (further into the margins). Design choices as small as putting information on an angle had an effect on how people perceived the information they were looking at.

Speakers Emma Werowinski and Andrea Miranda Sals talk about:
* Research insights from 5 partner organizations and 62 participants in Ohio.
* What we learned about culturally relevant design in voter education materials.
* The 13 design recommendations we wrote to make it easy to create engaging, accessible, and action-oriented voter education material.

This presentation originally aired at the AIGA Design Conference on October 10, 2024.
