Everyday - Ukulele, Piano and Glockenspiel cjhoylemusic 2019-02-03 | This song was written by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty in 1957 and was released as the B-Side to Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly and the Crickets.60 years ago today Buddy Holly was killed in a tragic plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa (along with Richie Valenz and the Big Bopper). This day would later become known as "The Day The Music Died". I decided to record a song written by Buddy Holly to release today in memory of his untimely death. I chose this song because I really like his original recording of it, especially the instrumentation. In the process of learning it, I became really impressed by the chord structure. My arrangement of the song uses 7 chords, 6 of which are major chords. The only other chord is a 7 chord. It's really uncommon for pop songs to have more than 3 major chords, and when they do, they typically have minor chords mixed in too.My arrangement of the song starts on C major, which is 3 semi-tones down from the original recording. I used my 1950's T.V. Pal plastic ukulele for this song. I used the same ukulele I used when I recorded "It's So Easy", another Buddy Holly song, back in 2014 and have always been really happy with how that video turned out. He recorded it with the Beach Boys in 1963 and the single peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also released as the first track on the Beach Boys album of the same name.A few weeks ago I was inspired to listen to some of my favourite surfing songs. This song seemed like it would be a fun challenge to record. The last video I recorded was focused mostly on the instrumental parts, so it also made sense to take on a project this time which was more vocally focused. Many other versions of the song have been recording one by Johnny Rivers in 1964 which rose to Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.It's been a really long time since I recorded a video for this channel. I choose this song because it's a song I've always liked and it's also simple enough that it allows me experiment with different sounds from different instruments.I recorded the ukulele and vocal part in my bathroom to take advantage on the natural reverb of that room. The ukulele is my homemade Maple Soprano ukulele. The piano I'm playing is my new (to me) Yamaha P-200 electronic piano which I really love. The song is recorded in the key of D major. Because I choose such a fast tempo, I added a second solo section to the song and a repeat of the first verse at the end. The Zombies are better known for their songs: She's Not There, Tell Her No, and Time of the Season.I transposed this song down 7 semi-tones from the key of the original recording to better suit my vocal range and the ukulele. The original recording also features a one semi-tone key change in the middle. It was first recorded by Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets, although their version was never commercially successful. Linda Ronstadt recorded the song in 1977 and her version reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.I've been wanting to learn and record this song since the summer. One evening in June I was getting ready for bed and debating whether or not to have a hot bath before bed. I concluded that I would have one since having a bath was a pretty easy thing to do and required very little effort. The phrase "It's so easy to have a bath" popped into my head and I started singing it to the tune of "It's So Easy". I guess this experience made me realize what a catchy song it is.I recorded my version in the key of F major primarily because it seems to best suit my vocal range. All Mixed Up - Ukulele cjhoylemusic 2014-08-17 | All Mixed Up is a song written by Pete Seeger in 1960. Seeger was a legendary folk singer who died earlier this year at the age of 94. Peter, Paul and Mary also recorded it for the 1990 album Flowers & Stones.A few months ago we had a Pete Seeger theme night at the Corktown Ukulele Jam in Toronto. I wanted to try to prepare something to perform for this theme night. However, I really didn't know very much about Pete or his music. I looked up some of his biggest songs, and although there were a few that I recognized, none of them jumped out at me as ones that I wanted to perform. I needed to dig deeper. I decided to try watching a documentary about Pete Seeger, and I very quickly became incredibly fascinated by him. The more performances and interviews of Pete I watched, the more performances and interviews I wanted to watch! In the span of about a month, I went from knowing virtually nothing about Pete Seeger to becoming a huge fan of him and his work!Pete Seeger was never really a commercial musician. His performances were always made in support of his causes. I was really interested and impressed learning about Pete's Hudson River clearwater project. I had been hoping to find an environmental song related to that I could learn to play and perform. However, in the process of listening to many of his songs I discovered All Mixed Up, and I instantly feel in love with it. I performed it at the Pete Seeger theme night and decided to make a video recording of it too. The song has such an interesting message and vision for the future!This is the first video which have posted in a very long time which features just one video track (no back-up vocals or other instruments). I had considered adding other tracks to it but after listening to it, I decided that it already sounded great without adding anything extra. The song was recorded and made famous by English singer Petula Clarke in 1964. Her recording of the song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 2 in the UK.This is another song that I have loved since I was a kid. I've been wanting to record this song for a while, and now I've finally gotten around to it.This video features me playing my Cajon for the first time in a video. I got it for my birthday last March, but really haven't made very much progress at learning to play it. In my last video I had the luxury of having my cousin Liam to play the Cajon part. Although I'm quite comfortable playing a wide variety of different instruments, my abilities are quite limited when it comes to percussion instruments. Recording the Cajon was definitely the hardest part of this video. Yankee Doodle - Ukulele, Cajón, Bass, Penny Whistle, Banjo, Glockenspiel, and Bagpipes cjhoylemusic 2013-09-16 | Although the origins of the song are a bit foggy, it is known that Yankee Doodle dates back to the Seven Years' War in the 1750's. It is sung patriotically in the United States of America but it is also a nursery rhyme type of song that children are taught at a young age. The song has many many verses but in our version of the song we just included lots of instrumental fills and only song 3 of the verses.This video features my multi-talented cousin Liam. Liam and I have been talking about recording a video together for quite a long time, and now we've finally made it happen! Liam's main instrument is the bagpipes, and he has competed in many festivals across the world. This is the first video that I have filmed in my new apartment in Toronto. This video also features my 1950's TV Pal plastic Ukulele and my 'LP Aspire Accents' Cajón. Both of these were gifts, and this is their first time appearing in a video. I really haven't mastered the art of playing a Cajón yet, so I was very happy when Liam was able to sit down and play it perfectly right away! The bag pipes that Liam are playing are quite unique.They do not have a blow pipe, they use a bellow system on his right arm instead. He chose to bring these bagpipes because they play in a more standard tuning that traditional bagpipes. They are also significantly more quiet than traditional bagpipes. I saw this musical when I was quite young when it was performed in Toronto with Donny Osmond playing the lead role. My family also had the audio recording of this production on CD, and I remember listening to it many many times in the car. I recently became interested in this musical again during an unrelated conversation with my grandma when she said the words "I closed my eyes". These words, the opening line of this song, triggered my memory of the song. His recording of the song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song is said to have been inspired by the death of Simon's family dog. The title however was taken from a menu at a chinese resturant from a dish which contains chicken and egg.This has always been one of my favourite Paul Simon songs. We played this song a few weeks ago at the Corktown Ukulele Jam. I decided to record it for this video because it has such a fun groove. This video features my brand new Amuse (Kazuyuki Sekiguchi) Pineapple plastic ukulele. I have always wanted an all-plastic ukulele because of their unique sound and durability. One of my greatest sources of musical inspiration is a long-running youtube channel called: GUGUG. His recording reached number 1 on the billboard hot 100 chart in the summer of that year and also helped to increase the popularity of bikinis in North America. Brian Hyland was only 16 years old when this song was at the height of its popularity!A few times in the past, I have made a point of recording a special novelty Halloween song (complete with a costume) around this time of the year. This year I was hoping to do the same, but realized that there really weren't any good Halloween songs left. So instead, I decided to choose a non-halloween novelty song. I've always liked this song, it's pretty catchy, and I figured it would be a fun one to wear a costume for! After some difficulty trying to find an Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini in my local stores, I decided to construct my own. It was written in preparation for the 2005 Weezer album: "Make Believe" but it didn't make it onto the album. A demo of the song was given to the band Sugar Ray in 2009, who recorded a version of the song for their album: "Music for Cougars". In the same year, Weezer also recorded a version of the song for their album: "Raditude" which featured some Indian musical instruments and vocals. The song has never been released as a single.In my version I used Ukulele, Glockenspiel, Melodica and Recorder because I wanted it to be entirely acoustic. Over the last week I've been trying to get over a cold, and it wasn't quite gone when I recorded this. Another popular version of the song was recorded by Grand Funk Railroad in 1974.This is another oldies song that I've always enjoyed. I first adapted the song for ukulele when I was looking for songs to lead at my ukulele club. It was always a fun one to play with a group. When I was brainstorming songs to record for videos I looked through my folder of songs from that club and choose this one. I had fun doing the vocal harmonies, though they really are surprisingly simple. Pathetic - Ukulele, Mandolin, Bass, and Midi Drums (Featuring Sebi) cjhoylemusic 2012-08-15 | This song was written by Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge of the american band Blink 182. This song was recorded and released as the first track on their 1997 album, Dude Ranch.I really enjoyed listening to Blink 182's music while I was growing up, and I still really like their music from that era. I've always wanted to record a Blink 182 cover song for YouTube, but it has taken me a long time to choose which one. I had my Blink 182 shirt sitting in my closet for a very long time waiting to be used in a video. I had the idea for this collaboration when I was listening to this song on the bus last fall, and realizing that it was already essentially a perfect duet, because the vocalists took turns sharing the vocals back and forth. When I was thinking about who could be the other half of the duet, Sebi immediately jumped into my head. He creates multi-track videos on his channel which are of a similar style to mine, and I was pretty sure he was a Blink fan because he's already done many Blink 182 covers, so I decided to ask him. I'm really happy with how this turned out! Sebi put an incredible effort into creating the electronic drum beat, and recording the ukulele and bass. The song is believed to have been written by Oliver Hood of the group: Rice Brothers' Gang in 1933. The song has been performed and recorded by numerous artists including Johnny Cash, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry, Ray Charles, and Anne Murray.I was looking for a very simple and basic song for my next video and this one seemed appropriate. This is a song that I've known forever, but had never read the words to all of the verses until recently. I was very disappointed to find out that this seemingly happy song has a pretty sad ending. I decided however to keep the song happy, and only sing the chorus and first verse along with some instrumental fills. The second half of the video features my invisible choral backup singers. I choose to make them invisible because their faces looked funny and would have been distracting to include on the screen. This video is the first to feature my slide whistle.The shirt I am wearing in the video is one I got at the Mariposa Folk Festival. I choose this shirt for the video because the festival uses a smiling sunshine as their logo :) Recently I've been trying to incorporate more smiling into my musical videos after years of receiving comments that I look too serious in my videos. She wrote the song in 1970, and it was her debut hit reaching number 14 on the Canadian pop charts. Joni was inspired to write the song on a trip to Hawaii and it's about how civilization is constantly expanding and sadly swallowing up the beauty of the natural world. The song has also been covered by many other artists including The Neighborhood, Maire Brennan, Amy Grant, and Counting Crows.This is a song that I've always really liked and have wanted to record. As I was recording it, I was also thinking it was nice to be recording something by a Canadian artist, with Canada Day coming up next weekend!This is the very first video to feature my new violin! I saw it listed on Kijiji around Christmas time for such a low price that I couldn't pass on it! It's definitely a challenging instrument, and I really haven't spent very much time learning how to play it yet. I figured this song would be a good chance to test it out in a song just playing something very simple with it. The biggest challenge for me is definitely getting used to using a bow.This video also features my recently repaired and modified bass. I replaced part of the plastic pickgaurd with a piece of sheet metal which I shaped and painted. The original version seems to be pretty heavy on the vocal harmonies so I decided to focus on voice and keep the instrumentation simple. The song was recorded by The Ronettes in 1963, which reached #2 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts during the summer of that year. There is another great version of this song recorded by Canadian musician Andy Kim in 1970. Andy Kim also has many ties to Brill Building, including co-writing "Sugar Sugar" for the Archies.The drum beat which is played at the beginning of this song is very significant because many songs recorded after this have used the same drum beat as their intro. Wikipedia has a long list of songs which use the "Be My Baby drum beat". Even though I am by no means a percussionist, I made sure to include this intro using the tools I had available (Cardboard Box and Tambourine).This video features Siany of Australia, who I was very privileged to have the opportunity to work with again. At the time I was working very hard at my goal of recording a full 12 song album before I finished high school. Almost 5 years later I am still hoping to get the album finished, but my speed has definitely decreased significantly since I started putting alot of my musical time into YouTube covers. The title of the album is "One Manned Band On Demand" aka OMBOD, and it will definitely be finished one day!This is my first video in a very long time which does not feature a ukulele! I used the original audio from my 2007 recording of the song for this video. The only part I rerecorded was the vocals for everything except the 3rd Pre-Chorus. Elvis Presley made the song famous with his 1972 recording of it which reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This was Elvis' final top 10 hit single. I've always wanted to make a cover of an Elvis song, but there are so many too choose from! In the last little while I've heard this song played frequently on all of the different oldies radio stations that I listen to, and I've grown to really like it. Musically it is very simple, but still alot of fun to play and listen to. I definitely hit some high notes with my voice in this video! The Purple People Eater - Ukulele and Kazoo cjhoylemusic 2011-10-30 | This novelty song was written and recorded by Sheb Wooley in 1958. The song spent 6 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts during June and July of that year. Two years ago I recorded the Halloween novelty song "Monster Mash", and I've always been pleased with how well that video turned out. This year for Halloween I wanted to try to do another novelty song to follow it up. After looking around I realized that there weren't very many other catchy Halloween songs that I could do, but after much contemplation I decided to record this one. I realize its not as appropriate for Halloween as the Monster Mash was, but I still think it was a good choice. The Sound of Silence - Ukulele and Two Part Vocal Harmony cjhoylemusic 2011-10-03 | This song was written by Paul Simon in 1964 and recorded for Simon and Garfunkel's first album "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." The album and the song were not commercially successful, so Simon and Garfunkel stopped playing music together, and Paul Simon moved to England. Without consulting Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel, their producer assembled some studio musicians and overdubbed their recording of The Sound of Silence with an Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, and Drums. This new version was released almost a year later than the original release, and the song climbed the Billboard Hot 100 charts all the way to number 1! Simon and Garfunkel reunited to capitalize on their musical success.I am a huge fan of Simon and Garfunkel. Their songs have such magical two part harmonies and Paul Simon is an excellent songwriter!I recorded this version in the song in the key of D major. I tried to use the exact same vocal melodies that were used in the original recording. I was able to figure them out using the original recording from Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. That album was recorded in stereo, and by fading between the left track and the right track you can separate the two independent voices, which is extremely useful, and not possible on many other albums recorded.Please leave a comment and let me know what you think. On Broadway - Ukulele, Bass, 12 String, Piano, Melodica, Banjo, Glockenspiel and Tambourine cjhoylemusic 2011-09-25 | This song was written by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller. This song was a hit for The Drifters in 1963 which eventually reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Interestingly enough, the original form of this song was written solely by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and was recorded by girl groups such The Cookies and The Crystals. The song was later modified by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in last minute preparation for a recording session with the Drifters. Another fun fact about this song is that the guitar solo on The Drifter's version was performed by Phil Spector. I've always really lived this song, and when I was planning my August 2011 trip to New York City, there were many sights that I wanted to see along Broadway. The video footage was shot using a camera which was mounted to my bicycle helmet as I rode my bike down Broadway. If you look closely, you should be able to pick out many recognizable locations, such as the Ed Sullivan Theater and the Brill Building. I choose to record the song in a form which could be described as the key of G major, although the chords used in this song don't seem to belong to 1 single key. I found this song was a bit of a struggle for me interns of vocal range. The high notes seemed a bit too high to sing, and I was already at my limit for the lowest notes. This is my first attempt at using a green screen for a video. It seemed appropriate for this video. I figured I would start with something small, and only green screen my head. Charlie and The MTA - Ukulele, Banjo and Bass cjhoylemusic 2011-06-26 | This song, originally titled 'M.T.A.', was written by Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Lomax Hawes in 1949 for the Boston mayoral campaign of Walter O'Brien. The song's melody and chord progression closely resembles another train song called "Wreck of the Old 97", and even earlier song called "The Ship That Never Returned". M.T.A was made famous by the Kingston Trio and their 1959 recording of it. There is another excellent recording of this song on YouTube by the Canadian a cappella band 'The Heebee-jeebees' which I would recommend listening to.This song tells a humourous story about a man taking the subway and not being allowed to leave because he didn't have enough money to pay the exit fare. During the time period, the city had added exit fares on their subway lines in order to collect more money without making modification to the automated turnstile fare collectors. If elected as mayor, Mr. O'Brien promised to do away with the exit fares to prevent the type of situation in the song from happening. From what I have read, Walter O'Brien had several songs written and recorded for his campaign about many of his platform items. Since he couldn't afford radio advertisement, he played the songs over a loudspeaker on a truck which was driven all over the city. He received a hefty $10 fine for disturbing the peace. Unfortunately Walter O'Brien was never elected as mayor, but the story of Charlie lives on in the Boston subway with the "CharlieCard", the present day electronic card-based fare collection system.The song has a great story and a great melody. This was always one of my favourite songs that we used to sing when I was a Camper and CIT at Camp Ponacka. The lyrics of this song have many variations from different recordings I have heard. I chose to use a combination of the Kingston Trio lyrics along with some of the ones from the Camp Ponacka songbook. I even added one of my own lyrics, can anybody guess which one it was? Their recording peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.I've always really enjoyed this song. It is a great story with a great message! This was one of my favorite songs that we used to sing in Mr. Harshman's Grade 4 music class.Siany lives in Australia. I first discovered her videos a few months ago when she participated in a ukelele tribute to Paul McCartney. When I first visited her channel I was really impressed with the number of oldies songs she had covered on ukulele and I subscribed instantly! She is working towards a goal of learning and recording 50 songs before her 24th birthday, which is definitely not an easy task! The song was made famous by Manfred Mann in 1964. Their version spent 2 weeks at number one on the UK singles chart as well as 2 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.This has been one of my favourite songs since I was a little kid. I remember I had an old cassette tape with this song on it and one day I spent several hours listening to this song over and over again. I would lay on the couch listening to the song, then when it ended I would get up, rewind the tape, and listen to it again. Even today when I listen to this song, right when it ends the introduction of the song "Bus Stop" by the Hollies comes into my head. Bus Stop was the next song on the tape!This video features my Banjo for the first time. I got it for Christmas and am still teaching myself to playing it. It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.This song is a collaboration I recorded with maybabytumbler. I was introduced to her channel last summer when I was organizing a mass collaboration of the song Wavin' Flag. The video received several positive comments about maybabytumbler's singing, and many people requested that they wanted to hear more of her singing. Since it was such a pleasure working with her, I asked if she would be interested in collaborating with me in another video.The most difficult part of this collaboration was choosing the song. Several song suggestions were sent back and forth before maybabytumbler suggested this one. I hadn't heard this song before, but after listening to it a few times I agreed that it would be a great song for a collab!I transposed the song up one semi-tone from the original key it was recorded in. Im Just a Kid - Ukuleles, Cowbell, Tambourine, and Triangle cjhoylemusic 2011-03-05 | This is my entry to the Montreal Uke Grand Prix presented by www.UkuleleJunky.com . Since this contest is based in Montreal, I figured it made the most sense to choose a song written by a Montreal band, and to wear a Canada shirt. I've been wanting to record this song for a very long time, so I'm glad I saved it for this occasion. I'm Just a Kid was written by Pierre Bouvier the front man and lead singer of Simple Plan. This song was Simple Plan's debut single on their debut album 'No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls' from the winter of 2002. I remember hearing it for the first time on Edge 102, a Toronto radio station. I immediately fell in love with the song! A little while later the band was interviewed on the radio. About a month later the album was released and I went and bought it. This song brings back so many great memories from 2002, when I was 12, and still 'just a kid'. For this recording I transposed the song down to the key of F major. I used my Baritone uke to play the song's characteristic intro riff. I've known how to play that intro on guitar for many years, but I figured it made more sense to play it on uke if I was going to enter this into a Uke Contest. 'Stop' was originally recorded by The Spice Girls in 1997. The song was included on their second album "Spiceworld". The writing of the music and lyrics are credited to The Spice Girls, Andy Watkins, and Paul Wilson. This song peaked at number 6 in the UK and number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. I've always liked this song, it was a really fun one to record! I decided to record this song because I have performed another spice girls song many times and it always seems to be a crowd favourite. Their recording reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Phil Collins recorded a version of this song in 1982, which also reached Number One.This is the first video I've recorded in my new basement apartment. It is also the first time I've used my Glockenspiel or Triangle in a video, both of which I received as Christmas gifts this year. I decided not to add any extra vocal tracks to this recording because I couldn't find any harmonies that would fit, and I was happy with how it sounded already.I decided to record this song because I heard it on the radio while driving, and listening to the lyrics I realized it was a genre neutral song. I really love The Supremes, they had so many excellent songs! Mighty Quinn - Ukulele, Penny Whistle, Sax, and Cow Bell cjhoylemusic 2010-12-31 | This video marks the milestone of 1000 subscribers on YouTube! Thank you very much to all of my new subscribers! This song was written by Bob Dylan in 1967 and originally titled "Quinn The Eskimo". Manfred Mann recorded the song in 1968 using the title "Mighty Quinn". Their version reached number 1 on the UK Charts and number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. After hearing this song a few times on the radio in September 2006 I became addicted to it, and listened to it very heavily for several weeks. There is something amazing about Manfred Mann's recording of the song. Back in 2007 I began experimenting, recording my own version of the song. Since Manfred Mann's version is so heavy on the vocal harmonies, I figured I needed to learn to sing vocal harmonies. I had never sang vocal harmonies before, so this song was my apprenticeship. I've never looked back, seldom recording anything with just one vocal track. My early recording of this song also included a sax solo, which was recorded during the peak of my high school saxophone career. I tried my best to imitate that solo in this video, but my embouchure has significantly diminished from 3.5 years of minimal saxophone playing. This version of the song was recorded in the key of D major. The Penny Whistle and Cowbell were both Christmas gifts that I received this year from my parents and my sister. Hang on Sloopy - Ukulele, Melodica, Vocal Bass, Waste Paper Basket cjhoylemusic 2010-08-15 | 'Hang on Sloopy' was a Billboard number one hit for The McCoys in 1965. The song was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and first recorded by the The Vibrations in 1964 under the title: 'My Girl Sloopy'. This song is also the official rock theme song of Ohio State University. If you haven't heard it yet, I strongly recommend listening to the version that their marching band plays. The introduction beat is played on a small plastic waste paper basket. I transposed the McCoy's version from G major down to C major to suit my vocal range. Since my bass guitar is thousands of kilometers away I decided to try vocal bass for this video. I sang the bass line in the key of G Major and then pitched it down to C Major using software. Pork and Beans - Ukulele cjhoylemusic 2010-07-18 | This video is a little bit different than my regular material. I strayed from my normal style so that the video would stand out as 'Rock' for the contest. The ukulele distortion was added in post production, my Fluke ukulele is not electric. The letters on my face at the beginning and end of the video are actually real facial hair! As you can see in my last video I had a beard, and I shaved it off to write the word "ROCK" for this contest. This song was written by Rivers Cuomo the front man of the American band Weezer. Weezer included this song on their 2008 self-titled album. The single spend 11 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Chart. It is considered Weezer's most successful single to date. Sugar Sugar - Mandolin and Water Glasses cjhoylemusic 2010-07-04 | This song was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, released in 1969 under the name 'The Archies'. The Archies are a fictional musical group comprised of cartoon characters from Archie Comics. The track held the number-one spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 4 weeks and was later declared the number one single of the year! This is the first video I have recorded featuring my Mandolin. I was originally planning on recording this with a ukulele and in the key of C, but the high notes were just toooo high. I decided to switch to my Mandolin because it was already tuned down two steps, meaning I could easily play it in the key of Bb and have more success on the high notes. The idea for using the glasses of water in this song came to me when I was kayaking up a river last weekend. The glasses give a really unique sound which seems to suit this song well. Indiana Wants Me - Ukulele, Melodica, Police Sirens cjhoylemusic 2010-05-08 | 'Indiana Wants Me' was a #1 hit in Canada in 1970, and also reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was recorded and written by Toronto's 'R. Dean Taylor' and marketed on Motown Records' "Rare Earth" subsidiary. I read somewhere that special copies of the single were created with the police siren sound effects removed for airplay in California. Right after finishing the recording phase of this video I realized that the post-chorus lyric is supposed to be "I wish I had you..." not "I just wanted you..." The version of the song credited to 'The Crystals' reached Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. That recording is an excellent example of the Phil Spector 'Wall of Sound'. The chord structure of this song is very basic, as it only uses the 3 major chords of the scale (no minor chords). I recorded it in the key of F. In my arrangement I put a strong emphasis on 2 part vocal harmony. I recorded 2 ukulele tracks, 1 piano, 1 twelve string guitar, and of course the unmistakeably sax solo. Usually when I make a video, I carefully plan everything out far in advance, so this was a chance to try the complete opposite. On these sites, video conversations often last less than 3 seconds, so I wore the orange and yellow safety vest to grab people's attention so they would give me a fair chance before disconnecting. I Believe - Ukulele and Sax cjhoylemusic 2010-02-20 | After a bit of a dry spell, I am back with another ukulele video! I have been following the television coverage of Vancouver 2010 VERY closely, and with great enthusiasm. Team Canada has been doing excellent so far, we have earned a medal at least once every day for the first 8 days in a row!This song is CTV's official theme song for these Olympics. I've been hearing bits and pieces of it non-stop when watching the television coverage, and have realized that it is a really nice song. It was written by Canadians Stephan Moccio and Alan Frew. Singer Nikki Yanofsky (who also sang the national anthem at the Olympic opening ceremonies) recorded a version of this song which has reached the top of the Canadian charts in February 2010. I applogize that my voice is a bit rough, for some reason this video took me literally over 100 takes! To Know Her Is To Love Her - Ukulele cjhoylemusic 2010-01-17 | This is a video of firsts.... My first video of 2010. My first video in my new room. My first video playing my brand new 'Fluke' ukulele. My first video where I played a song in 'Six-Eight' time. This song, originally titled "To Know Him Is To Love Him", was written by Phil Spector inspired from words written on his father's tome stone. Spector's vocal group, 'The Teddy Bears' recorded the song in 1958 and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Beatles modified the lyrics so it could be sung by a male narraror, re-titling it "To Know Her Is To Love Her". Other versions were recorded under the title "To Know You Is To Love You". I apologize for my voice in this one. I woke up with a slight sore throat, but decided it was better to make a video with my voice in the condition it was in, rather than wait for it to get worse.
