It appears that there are two groups of primates on either side of the enclosure, which I believe are Gibbons on one side and Saimangs (a close relative of the Gibbon) on the other, separated by an artificial river/lake that creates a barrier that they cannot cross. In spite of the physical separation, the two groups appear to exhibit territorial threats and behaviors to intimidate each other into staying out of the others space. The result of this is an amazing selection of vocalizations which can be heard loudly throughout the zoo grounds.

The lightning was nearly continuous at times, which made for a few interesting long-exposure time-lapse sequences. Shown here in chronological order are all the raw frames taken during the hour-long storm, including the camera moves.
Fortunately for the people on the ground (but less fortunate for the photographer!) most of the lightning bolts stayed up in the clouds, so all that was visible most of the time were the resulting flashes of light. However, a few bolts DID drop below the cloud ceiling, and a couple even went to ground, so there are a few nice images mixed in to this sequence. Those frames are available at the JCMDI.COM website for free download... see below.
Filmed in Hendersonville, Tennessee with a Sony a7iii using 10 second exposures.

When not using the GoPro's Pro-Tune feature, there tends to be flicker when the camera adjusts its ISO and shutter speed to compensate for changing light levels. When light levels are consistent, this isn't a problem.

Judging by the bulge in its belly, it found the meal it was looking for and was probably resting afterwards when it was discovered, sunning itself in the morning air. Being called a "Rat Snake" probably helps this snake's reputation (since most people probably assume it eats rats), as opposed to "Ankle-Biting Death Snake" which would almost certainly have gotten it killed on the spot! So, a few basic video clips document the event as the snake makes its way back into the wilderness, and all is well...

This rather scroungy Opossum looked more like a giant rat - especially when viewed from behind. It's not bad enough that it came to freeload the cat's munchies, but it also dumped the bowl over, scattering cat food all over the place - and didn't even bother to eat most of it! Meanwhile the cat patiently cleaned himself, not seeming to care much that a "giant rat" was helping itself to the food! The loud crunching sounds were amusing as the intruder was apparently unable to chew with its mouth closed =)

The biggest problem is the exposure flicker when the camera is in "auto" mode. A fixed exposure makes for a more consistent light level but also does not change as light levels drop through sunset. While not great material, they still represent some interesting movement in the atmosphere and so are being released as B-Reel clips for those who care more about action than perfection...

The old wooden bridge was washed-out by the floods in 1969 and was replaced with the new concrete bridge you see there now. At least two buildings used to be located here, one of which was said to be the old Honby School House. That building was completely wiped out by the flood, while the other one - the remains (stone fence walls) of which can be seen in the 3rd clip - remained standing but abandoned until it burned and collapsed some years later. This small waste area also contains a small portion of old Soledad Canyon road and will probably bulldozed and made into something else eventually. What remains at this time has been recorded here for historical purposes...

In the short time I had to race for the camera and get it rolling, I struggled to find the bird in the viewfinder with enough zoom to get a good look at it before it flew away. There are no white perching-type birds found in this region of southern California so it really stood out as it hopped around the ground. Its behavior, markings and size match those of House Finches which commonly forage in this spot, although usually in flocks of several birds or more. On the ground, its color was obvious, although this is not so apparent when filmed in the tree against the lighter background. While it is possible this could be an escaped Canary or other pet, it didn't really match the size and shape of anything other than the wild finches and sparrows found here. If it IS a House Finch, it could be an albino, melanic or other genetic aberration. Hopefully it will return to forage here again so I can get some better footage.

Included here are a few experimental attempts to capture some lightning bolts in slow motion with the Sony FS700RH, using the stock lens pulled back as wide as possible to cover as much sky as I could. It was really coming down during this thunderstorm so many of the bolts were obscured by the heavy rain and low clouds, plus, I was forced to film from under the eve while the lightning was almost directly overhead - resulting in some not-so great shots with water drops on the lens and all. In a few scenes you can see the hail pellets flying all different directions through the frame as they bounced off of the roof and nearby objects. Also, the camera's rolling shutter creates a "rolling bar" (bright band moving up or down the frame) effect during some lightning strikes. Unfortunately this (like most high-speed, slow motion cameras) doesn't record audio in slow motion mode, so there's no thunder to accompany the visuals. Still, lightning fans might enjoy what little I did manage to catch... The capture frame rate was 240fps (full HD 1920x10080p), and the footage is further slowed down in software by 2x, resulting in a 20x slower than real-time speed when played back at 24fps.

In southern California these mass emergings typically take place after rains when the sun warms the wet ground. This can happen at any time of year, but generally occurs in fall and spring.
Being ably to fly allows them to start new colonies further away than just crawling, and windy conditions increase their range even further, but they can only fly for a few minutes before they tire and land, usually within a few hundred feet from their starting point. Many of them are eaten by birds, dragonflies and other predators which find them to be easy prey. The wings are temporary and once back on the ground they are easily shed. Males most likely find females by using pheromones and random luck. The male follows the female closely as she goes searching for a suitable location to become the king and queen of a new colony. The queen will grow to enormous size compared to the rest of the colonial citizens. She can live for 25 years or more, and lay over 2000 eggs per day.
