Captain Falcon Break the Targets 7.52
updated
My previous best was 7.52, from 4 weeks prior (youtu.be/HKvAV82Ri_0).
This run had an excellent first few targets. The jump towards target 4 was not with full drift, losing about 4 frames. The second half was okay, with a couple frames lost here and there. I can definitely see hitting 7.3x, but reaching the world record (currently 7.30) could be quite a grind!
This is not a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) - it was played by me in real time.

My previous best was 7.97, from 3 days prior.
Happy to have finally pulled this off! There's a lot that has to come together in this stage, with so many ways to drop a run. I recently made a small change to my technique which caused a significantly increase in speed and consistency - a new claw grip on the controller for the very beginning. I find it makes it much easier to hit the initial X, X, B sequence quickly. I also started using a slight control stick recenter to optimize the rejump angle towards T2, and an L trigger trick to avoid light shield after the first wavedash.
This level has a bottleneck after throwing the T6 fireball, with it being optimal to start the jump at 3.70. This run had a 3.72 jump, which causes a 2 frame loss. There was also a few frame loss around the T7 to T8 part, with everything else being essentially perfect.

This is the current TAS world record for this level at time of posting. The previous best record was real time (no faster TAS existed). However, that real-time record was disputed:
- Samplay obtained a score of 3.78 in 2020 with video proof (youtu.be/w-Y4_94HbOU).
- kavaz claimed a score of 3.67 around 2009 / 2010 with screenshot proof, but the proof was lost when wii-records.com went down, very few people remembered seeing it, and nobody remembered hearing any strategy details.
To set out to try to prove or disprove the feasibility of 3.67 (or lower), I used scripting capabilities of Dolphin Lua Core to test many RNG seeds: I wrote a script that would start the level with a random seed and check if DK's vertical position was low enough by a certain frame (i.e. he quickly fell between the right buildings). I ran this script on 16 copies of Dolphin, running at 200% speed, for about 16 hours. Across a total of 227,000 resets, I found 22 seeds where DK died at 0.23, and 306 seeds where he died at 0.25 (and a single ultra-rare seed where he died at 0.26). The seeds are listed at docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KcoWzsbeKZ0ce3XNVVe6RuubEjmx37Q06erTvDhgU8g
I then shared these seeds with Samplay, who did some manual tests on the second stock to find movement that would cause DK to walk left, fast fall, and nair. This video shows one such sequence of inputs.
Inputs: Starting at 2.00, down for 4 frames, then right for 6 frames. Then down + L to spot dodge the nair.

My previous best was 3.50, from 1 month prior (youtu.be/VdHzsW8xK80). That was the previous world record, tied with samthedigital (youtu.be/2E0qyX5jM2I).
Only took me about 14k more attempts since I hit 3.50 to shave this 1 frame. This run was absolutely frame perfect until the final platform slip off, where a single frame was lost during the hookshot movement. The optimal ending requires a rejump and air dodge immediately after leaving the platform. I think the ideal 3.46 should be tough but likely doable...

It was key to carefully plan out the controller grip / button inputs to make it as smooth as possible. For example, I believe this is my first ever PB using the R button.
Played by Mario 64 Master (Scott Rogoff) on April 20, 2023. This was the world record for this level, tied with samthedigital (youtu.be/2E0qyX5jM2I), until I achieved 3.48 on May 18, 2023 (youtu.be/61MnKMe_xa4).

My first completion of this strategy, after about 49,000 attempts! By far the hardest part is the middle section, which requires a very precise smash DI off the flipper (arguably tighter than frame-perfect), and several follow-up inputs with no time to react. I was expecting closer to 5.40 on first completion, so I'm quite happy with this.
My previous best was 6.26 (youtu.be/pWmt4PvPA88) from 2 months ago, basically the same strategy with a messed up ending. Before that, I had 6.28 from 18 years prior (youtu.be/4fjVfepQX-U).

This is the current TAS world record for this level. The previous record was 12.68 by ajp_anton (youtu.be/mkRvmgfWNG4) from June 2010.
1 frame was saved due to faster leftward movement towards target 8. A full jump at 10.18 and fast fall at 10.63 lead to perfect alignment for a horizontal waveland at 10.87. This causes a faster leftward slide along the blue platform than the down-left angled waveland in the previous record. Doc slips off the platform's edge a frame earlier (at 10.99 instead of 11.00).

My previous best (and previous world record) was 7.28, from a week prior (youtu.be/05yBRwdqLX4).
Comparison with the 7.28 run:
- 4 frames were saved by rejumping towards target 4 two frames sooner (in-game timer 2.55). This required approaching from a lower angle to avoid hitting the ceiling near target 4.
- 1 frame was saved by staying farther *right* after the first left waveland (in-game timer 4.52). This allowed building more leftward velocity by the next slipoff (in-game timer 4.80), which allowed barely reaching the next slipoff (in-game timer 5.16) in one less frame.

Melee NTSC 1.02
Recorded with Nvidia ShadowPlay (1080p, 60fps, 50 Mbps)
Thanks to mugg for creating most of the strategy (youtu.be/kAso7vEnyv4). This run improves that time by 30 frames using a hookshot reel trick I accidentally discovered in 2004 while playing this level.
At time of publish, the real-time world record was 10.57 by me.
This was the TAS world record for this level until I achieved 7.28 on April 25, 2020 (youtu.be/05yBRwdqLX4).
My previous best (and previous world record) was 7.36, from 6 months prior (youtu.be/D7L2--phX2w).
Compared to the 7.36 run, 2 frames were saved by optimizing the movement between targets 9 and 10. Notably, starting the fast fall sooner allows Samus to move further upwards on the first frame of the air dodge (in-game timer 7.16).
This TAS is 20 frames faster than my real-time 7.67 run (youtu.be/n-wDUGsHnoc).

This was the world record for this level until I achieved 7.67 on June 21, 2020 (youtu.be/n-wDUGsHnoc).
My previous best (and previous world record) was 7.75, from 4 months prior (youtu.be/4MWaCZkG4bQ).
This is not a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) - it was played by me in real time.
