Lyrics Hey fellas I'm talking to you you and you too Do you guys know who I'm talking to? Those of you who go out and stay Out all night and half the next day And expect us to be home When you get there
But let me tell you something The sisters are not going for that no more Cause we realize two things; That you aren't doing anything for us We can do better by ourselves So from now on we gonna use What we got to get what we want So you'd better think, think
It was the time when we haven't met? That's the thing I never will forget Now baby I got a whole lot to give And a whole lotta loving That a woman could give yeah
But before I give it up I gotta think think Think what the future holds for me Just go ahead and see I don't need no heartache I can't stand no misery Let me think think

It was released on the compilation cd Funk Power 1970: A Brand New Thang (1996). In March 1970, most of Brown's mid-to-late 1960s road band walked out on him due to money disputes, a development augured by the prior disbandment of The Famous Flames singing group for the same reason in 1968. Brown and Famous Flames singer Bobby Byrd (who elected to remain in the band during this tumultuous period) subsequently recruited what was to become the first line-up of "The J.B.’s". Among them were the brothers Bootsy (19 years, bass) and Catfish (21 years, guitar) Collins, saxophonist Robert McCulloch and John "Jabo" Starks (drums). Their first recording, “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” was recorded the same night they were on the job in only two takes. Sex Machine purports to be a live recording. However, the first of two LP's material consists of tracks recorded in studio settings with added reverberation and overdubbed applause. This here is the original undubbed, audience-free and unedited studio version. It was released on the compilation cd Funk Power 1970: A Brand New Thang (1996). Notice how Brown exhorts tenorist McCulloch to “Blow me some Trane, brother!” a reference to John Coltrane.

The first roots of "Funk" on record! This unedited recording was released at its original speed on the box set "Star Time" (1991). In 1965 the original recording was sped up for its single release, increasing the tempo and raising the pitch by a half step (from 65 bpm to about 90 bpm) and it sounds off tune too. This is the only worthy version of this classic piece of funk !

Brown re-recorded Hot Pants as he went to the Polydor label. The single version was the last recording he made for People Records. The single version (parts 1,2 & 3) was never released on an album. Also on this channel though.

I only lost 5 sec., not more as you would expect, because there's a small repetition of Pt 1 on the beginning of Pt 2. I've checked the discography of James Brown but did not find an album (streaming service, cd or vinyl) where the single version appears on as one piece. So this is a unique opportunity :-) I myself, I prefer this single version over the album version because it has a slower tempo. I'll post the album version also, so you can check out for yourself.

This talented local group probably had the most interesting naming scheme in Houston; as the years changed, so did its name. They began as The Americans of ’68 with “Baby Baby Baby” (Ovide) and became the Americans of ’70 for “Toe Hold” (Libra). Far and away, The Americans have to be the most frustrating band to research, ever. It's very difficult to find anything about them anuwhere. “Cancer Stick” was first released in 1971 on the Libra label. It tells the tale of their aptly-named drummer "Sugar Bear" who just won’t stop puffing away at his cigarettes, complete with repeated fake coughing. The song was soon picked up for national and international distribution by the Bell label, and came complete with a picture sleeve of a cigarette in an ashtray. But by the time Bell picked up the single, it was already 1972, so for the second pressing, The Americans thus became The Americans of ’72.

"Blue Velvet" (with Sam "The Man" Taylor on tenor saxophone) was issued that same month. Even though the Clovers had been singing "Blue Velvet" for years at the Apollo, they had to fight for the same number of years to get to record it, since Atlantic didn't own the publishing rights! Although "Blue Velvet" is one of the finest tunes the Clovers ever recorded, it only managed to stagger up to #14 on the charts.

One of numerous woman singers who passed through James Brown's touring show as a protégée of sorts, Anna King made one solid Brown-produced album in 1964, Back To Soul, which contained a couple of modest hit singles. After leaving Brown in '65 she released just this one single but it lacks the fire and funkyness of the original. She did later sing with Duke Ellington's band, but left popular music for gospel and became a minister.

The 21year old Otis Redding was in October 1962 driver and singer for Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers. On that particular evening, he was a driver for the band; Jenkins would come to the Stax studio itself. The recordings were not going so well and were stopped earlier. In the remaining studio time Otis Redding begged to be allowed to record a demo himself and started an a capella version of "These Arms Of Mine". Everyone present in the studio was amazed. Otis got his demo, the song was put to music on advice from Redding together with Steve Cropper on the piano and later recorded in one take. Otis Redding died five years later at the age of 26 in a plane crash at the height of his powers.
