Further it adds for the avoidance of doubt, that the deal with North Korea is ‘unambiguous’. The treaty includes a mutual assistance clause, in which each side committed to help resist external aggression. That’s an interesting commitment, when Russia is struggling to retake its own territories in the Kursk oblast. Putin signed the treaty with North Korea earlier this year but did not explain how it might be put into practice. The full impact of this has also not been appreciated, I feel, I certain sections of the media, so let’s jump into this story. @SiliconWafers ----------Is Israel at war with Russia? Well, frustratingly this is a no, yes answer to the question. Is it formally at war? No. Does the attack on Russian munitions being delivered to Iran constitute a declaration of war? No. Will Russia see it as such? Again no. But this is not a war like WWII or the Cold War. It’s a war without rules, where acts of aggression, terror and provocation are carried out without restraint and without rules. Russia is arming and conspiring with Israel’s enemies, of that there is no doubt. Russia is providing deadly aid; in the full knowledge it will be used by the proxies of it’s allies Iran to seek to slaughter Israeli civilians. Russia indeed has close ties with these proxy forces sowing death, terror, and chaos in the region, and Russia is fully cognisant of their strategies and techniques. Russia has probably assisted them in training as well as the provision of the materials of death. So yes, this really is a kind of war, and Russia is a full and willing participant in it. The grey zone war of sabotage, illegality, cyber and informational attacks, and the warm war of assassination and provocation. Putin, the emperor with no clothes, holds sway over vast lands and many nationalities, most of them impoverished and neglected. They are treated as little more than His disposable property, sacrificed on a whim and to satisfy his boundless vanity, greed and paranoia. Occasionally one of the so-called elites goes that way too. But… but there is a precedent. Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist and writer, and prominent reporter at the liberal newspaper Novaya Gazeta was found murdered in her apartment in central Moscow back in October 2006. Politkovskaya was shot at point blank range. There was widespread outrage that her murder was likely a contract killing, revenge for her reporting on human rights abuses and corruption, and her extraordinary criticism of the brutality of Putin’s second Chechen war. By a cruel irony, that only an absurd, perverse, and cruel county like Russia could have spawned, the man convicted of her murder has been pardoned after fighting in Ukraine. To get absolution for one murder, other murders were required by the state authorities. Criminals rewarded. Gioe and Elena Grossfeld----------This article argues that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 is illustrative of this broader, though understudied, pattern of autocratic mismanagement of strategic intelligence. The invasion was both spurred and accompanied by a catastrophic intelligence failure, the responsibility for which rests with Vladimir Putin, the arbiter of a system with limited capacity to offer dispassionate strategic assessments. His failure is characteristic of autocratic regimes assessing foreign developments, including Putin’s Soviet predecessors. Russian intelligence failed President Vladimir Putin in supporting the most consequential decision of statecraft, war, before Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine but has since recovered, possibly redeeming itself in Putin’s estimation by securing his regime nearly two and a half years since his shambolic invasion. This article explores Russian intelligence’s traditional areas of (relative) competence in the period following the full-scale invasion, we consider the categories of espionage, sanctions evasion, active measures, and repression, and conclude that Putin’s security and intelligence organs have reasserted themselves with terrible vigour, domestically and internationally. Evidence points to it being another empty threat, if we ignore the threatening words and look at Russia’s actions and capabilities. @SiliconWafers ----------The first action based was for Russia’s FSB security service to revoke the accreditation of six British diplomats in reaction to a widely held belief that use of British Storm Shadows will be authorised for use on the territory of Russia. These Moscow based personnel have been accused of spying and sabotage work. Six diplomats were named on Russian state TV, and photographs of them shown. As we already know, Russian propagandists love to position the British as their core enemy, the “main bastards”, and see British plotting as instrumental in pulling Washington away from its cautious ‘escalation management’ policies towards taking a harder line against Russia, and in support of a Ukrainian victory. Delusional, paranoid maybe, but this seems to be the thinking of the war-addicted elite in Russian media and policy making circles. Vladimir Putin said that a western move to let Kyiv use longer-range weapons against targets inside Russia would effectively mean NATO is “at war” with Moscow. It is known that US and UK diplomats are discussing easing rules on firing western weapons into Russia.Kyiv has been pressing for this change in policy for many months now, and indeed it makes no military sense at all to restrict Ukraine for firing back on the airfields and launch sites that deliver death and trauma to Ukrainian civilians daily. Calls for its screening to be pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival have intensified; surely festival organizers should have reacted when the film was showcased at the Venice International Film Festival, despite the public uproar it caused. @SiliconWafers ----------Breaking news, as this episode was being recorded, the Canadian broadcaster TVO made a statement that it had withdrawn support from the documentary "Russians at War" following protests from the Ukrainian community, and in fact far more widely than that.But this controversy pales beside news that the film was part-financed by the Canadian government to the tune of $312,000 US dollars. This despite the fact Canada is an ally of Ukraine in its existential fight against the Russian army. A rabble army of murderers, looters and rapists that the Canadian-Russian filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova seeks to absolve and whitewash of their documented war crimes. This is the accusation, but does it stand up to scrutiny? This video examines the controversy and the film itself to understand if the propaganda motive outweighs any artistic merits. If a malign actor, or an openly aggressive revanchist state like Russia, invests money in an information project, with the aim of manipulating the media space and public discourse, to alter both perceptions and policies in that country to favour its own strategic interests, then that is paid for speech, not free speech. The single deadliest attack of the war to date was in the city of Poltava in central Ukraine. A Russian missile struck a military educational facility on Tuesday killed 53 people and left more than 270 injured, according to the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry. Lviv has escaped the kind of destruction experiences by Kharkiv, Kherson and other cities. But on Wednesday the Russian World came to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. Seven people, including a mother and her three daughters, were killed by Russian shelling and projectiles. More than 50 people were injured, with five adults in a serious condition. One of the most extraordinary and heartbreaking sights was the father of those girls, being helped from the burning building by rescuers. His face caked with dried blood, he is taken to one side, to await news of his family. He receives the worst news and his grief is palpable. How do you recover from that?
