Previously, we discussed the very first ‘emergent’ property of intelligence known as ‘Reactivity’ under the concept of Sentience Quotient. Today, we are going to be talking about the next ‘emergent’ of intelligence beyond Reactivity, known as ‘Consciousness’. So, let’s dive right into it!
As brain structures get more complex with higher levels of data processing, they start to approach higher-order ‘emergent’ properties of intelligence. Consciousness of the human type is the next highest emergent according to this scheme. Human brains have about 1010 neurons with about 103 interconnections each and a bit rate on the order of 103 bits/sec/neuron. However, brains have tremendous redundancy; assuming a redundancy of 1:104 and a body mass of about 100 kilograms, the human organism works out to about 1010 bits/sec-kg, or an SQ value of roughly 10. This seems near the minimum for the emergence of consciousness according to the concept of Sentience Quotient. But of course, we should keep in mind that at each higher level of data processing, fewer data may be processed at that level. Moreover, beings at any one level of awareness should also possess all simpler levels of awareness but with a much higher rate of data processing of the simpler levels.
