While it does a pretty impressive job for how much it costs, it is pretty noisy. This example is a worst-case scenario, using a broadcast mic that usually needs a good bit of gain. This mic isn't nearly as bad as an SM7b or RE20, but it still likes a healthy pre-amp to sound it's best. At the professional level, these machines were everywhere, and had unique features that gained them a huge following in the sound for film world. This DTRS deck was at one time the top selling product from TASCAM, with over 60k of these units selling in the 1990's.
