In the 1950s, the U.S. government dropped actual nuclear bombs near a small town in Nevada—on purpose. The town was called St. George, and officials told residents not to worry. It was part of a Cold War-era PR push to normalize nuclear testing and reassure the public that atomic weapons could be used safely.
But it wasn’t safe.
Children played outside as radioactive fallout rained down. Sheep died in large numbers. And over the decades, cancer rates soared—especially rare forms linked to radiation exposure.
The U.S. eventually admitted the danger and created a compensation program for "downwinders"—but many victims were never paid, and many families never heard the truth about what happened.
This wasn’t Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
This was Nevada.
And the government told people it was just science.
