Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, and is the last book of the Pentateuch, or the Five Books of the Law.
The name Deuteronomy is actually derived from Greek Deuteronomion, which literally means “copy of the law” or “repetition of the law.” It comes from Deuteronomy 17:18, where we read that kings are instructed to write out their own copy of the Law.
Deuteronomy consists of three powerful farewell addresses delivered by Moses to the new generation of Israelites after their wanderings, and just before they entered the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder of God’s covenant, detailing the laws, blessings, and warnings for the children of Jacob–Israel.
This message provides an outline of this important Book of the Bible, which contains a history of the descendants of Jacob regarding their wanderings, the retelling of the Law, and the challenge to God's people as they entered into the Promised Land.
In particular, many of the blessings and the curses are covered in this message. Not only was this important for God’s people of that day to know and understand, it is also important for us today.
