We were allowed to edit the film — which had been transferred to videotape at some point — however we wanted, so I made a music video for Sly & the Family Stone's "Chicken," a track from their 1968 album "Life." (Judging by vimeo.com/78003024, UGA wasn't the only school that had access to this "Gunsmoke" footage.)

At least one, the quirky ensemble comedy "Northern Exposure" (1990-'95), eventually became a long-running hit. Others, like the wacky adventure-comedy "Johnny Bago" (1993), disappeared after just six episodes. But the risqué romantic comedy "Grapevine" was unique in that it was canceled after six episodes, then revived eight years later with the same main characters but only one returning cast member: Steven Eckholdt, who played Thumper (yes, Thumper) in the original version and David, Thumper's older brother, in the 2000 reboot. The new "Grapevine" was canceled after just five episodes, but the show's creator, David Frankel, had already brought the original's "Hannah and Her Sisters"-in-Miami charms to the big screen in '95 with his feature-film directorial debut, "Miami Rhapsody." The original "Grapevine" also starred Lynn Clark as Susan and Jonathan Penner as David, and this particular episode, which aired July 20, 1992, guest-stars Brett Cullen ("Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty"), Terry Farrell ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), and Brenda Strong ("Desperate Housewives"). Over the course of that summer, "SCTV" quickly became my favorite sketch-comedy show; the end of this particular rerun, which aired September 5, 1989 — it contains material from a 90-minute episode originally broadcast on NBC on November 12, 1982 — is followed by a "Global Village News" update anchored by Chuck Bruce (because Ron Burgundy was presumably on assignment).

Seaman, and Jeffrey Price, the director and screenwriters, respectively, of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988). The show had a farcical, high-energy pilot episode, directed by Zemeckis — before "Forrest Gump," released the following summer, began his journey down a less comedic career path — so I watched the rest of its six-episode run (two additional episodes never aired).
