Hamas militant leader Yahya Sinwar was killed during a gun battle in southern Gaza on October 16, 2024, Israeli officials said. The troops who found him were initially unaware that they had caught the country’s No 1 enemy until Sinwar’s body was identified later. Sinwar was believed to be the mastermind of the attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that triggered the Gaza war. The Israeli army has been searching for him for more than a year. World leaders say his death represents a turning point in the year-long conflict.
