P.S. We hope our kitten around got you purrrfectly April fooled.
Thanks to our pal Vibe Mountain for the music in this video, and to our pals Sam Rhodes, MixTape Club, and Hayato Yamane for the animations! And of course, big thanks to our friends Raj Kuppusamy and Mike Lacher for sharing their breakthrough discovery with us.
We made an episode about the new voice in the Google app (youtube.com/watch?v=qnGNfz7JiZ8) and wanted to make a quick demo video to so you could hear the new voice in action!
:) Nat & Lo's 20% Project http://youtube.com/natandlo -- a show about all the stuff we're curious about at Google. The Google Apps New VoiceNat and Friends2016-03-30 | If you’ve ever pressed the little mic in the Google app and talked to Google, you’ve probably heard a computer voice that talks back to you. We heard that there was a team at Google creating a new voice, and we jumped at the chance (and into the recording booth) to learn how they made it.
We had a lot of questions around what it’s like to create an app with the help of the people who use it (aka “crowdsourcing”.) Does it change how the app works? And how it evolves? What’s the motivation for people to want to help? What do they get out of it? And how much help do they need to give to make it work?
Which led us to check out Waze, a community-based traffic and navigation app that joined Google a couple of years ago. We talked with Di-Ann, a member of the Waze team, and also took a roadtrip (in a sweeeeet RV) to the beach with Jesse, a Waze global champ / volunteer map editor.
This episode was made in collaboration with our community of talented friends, inlcuding music by Vibe Mountain, and illustrations/animations by Beardy Glasses (http://beardyglasses.com), MixTape Club (http://mixtapeclub.com), and Zoë Lotus (http://www.zoelotus.net).
We knew Alex as this person who would sometimes visit our co-workers and show them interesting demos of things that he and his teammates had recently made. So, we of course wanted to see those demos for ourselves! We tracked him down, and his teammate Chris, to learn more about what their team at Google does.
Turns out, the Airbender team is a small group of folks working on physical interaction research & development. Their main focus is to invent new ways for people to interact with computers. And in their quest to do so, they make a ton of different stuff –– including gesture recognition, computer vision, multi-device interactions, VR input, sound, haptics, bad ideas/mistakes/accidental discoveries, and more.
And here’s the Radiolab episode we mentioned, which tells the story of how penicillin was accidentally discovered → http://www.radiolab.org/story/best-medicine (And if you want to know more about penicillin/mold, we also recommend Surprisingly Awesome's episode about mold: gimletmedia.com/episode/1-mold/.)
Thanks to our our friend Vibe Mountain for the music in this episode, and our friends Julia Melograna and Zoë Lotus for the illustrations and animations.
We got to go inside a giant WWII blimp hangar to help test (and pop) giant internet balloons with Project Loon. It just might have been our best day at work, ever.
If you’re curious…
*Want to know more about the gigantic hangar where they test the balloons? Here’s a little post Nat wrote. → goo.gl/CDVpYm
Thanks to our friend Julia Melograna for the cool illustrations, and our friends Vibe Mountain and Huma-Huma (http://www.huma-huma.com) for the music in this episode.
We’ve gotten questions from you guys via YouTube, Google+, Twitter, and in-person at the Grace Hopper Conference...so we thought it was about time we try to answer some of them in video form. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for asking them, and please keep asking us stuff. :)
Earlier this summer, we made a video about Android’s lawn sculptures and why it names its releases after tasty treats. Now we’re back to dig deeper into another Android tradition – Easter eggs!
*Like the Nat & Lo shirt that Lo’s wearing? We're in the process of figuring out the best way to get 'em to you, but if you want one now, you can work off this design. Feel free to change the shirt/color/anything else you want! http://www.customink.com/designs/natandlo1/ugm0-00a9-p2dq/hotlink
Thanks to artist Jack Larson for the amazing zombie paintings you see in this episode. http://zombieart.blogspot.com

We were curious to know what other Googlers have done as 20% projects, which led us to Winnie Lam. (Spoiler alert: she’s a huge animal lover / fashion wearer.) And a few years ago, she started a 20% project to remove and automatically ban elephant ivory ads from Google Shopping.
Elephant poaching is still a huge problem. If you’d like to help out or learn more, here’s a few non-profits that Winnie recommends:
And if you happen to see any ads that violate Google’s ads policies, which includes ads selling elephant ivory and other endagered species products, you can report them here: goo.gl/eU6ygP
Thanks to our friend Alex Gorosh for letting us use some of his elephant footage in this episode. (Very jealous he got to be that close to elephants to film that.) And thanks to our friend Vibe Mountain for letting us use his music!
In honor of Android Marshmallow (which we made an episode about here: goo.gl/qBf9dk) we decided to stuff our mouths with marshmallows and attempt comprehensible human speech.
How do the Android lawn sculptures get made? Why does Android name their releases after sweet, sugary foods? We attempt to find the answers to these Android mysteries and more in this week’s episode.
Congrats to everyone who correctly guessed Android Marshmallow! And for those that didn’t, there’s always ‘N’ext year. ;)
(Also we would like to say...when we rode on the truck it was going about 10 m.p.h. through the Google campus at midnight, with no other traffic around.)
Thanks to our friend Matt Farley (the most prolific singer-songwriter we know) for writing and singing this song. Listen to some of his other 17,000+ songs at: http://moternmedia.com/.
We use our phones every day...but we’d never seen the stuff inside them. So we got Dan from the Android Developers team to help us break apart a Nexus 5 and break down what’s inside it – so we could break it all down in video form for you.
Thanks to our musically-gifted friends Vibe Mountain and Fall On Your Sword for letting us use lots of their cool music in this episode. (Full music credits in order of appearance below in case anyone’s curious.)

If you’ve ever pressed the little camera button in the Google Translate app and used its instant camera translations feature, you know how crazy, sci-fi it is. So naturally, we wanted to know...how does it actually work?
