Through intricate patterns and selective dampening, they create a dynamic interplay of sound with M232 Vibraphone Mallets. The Vanderbilt Percussion Group, led by Ji Hye Jung, brings this complex work to life with sensitivity and precision.Vanderbilt Percussion Group is the Blair School of Music's Percussion Chamber music ensemble, performing contemporary works for both traditional and nonconventional percussion. Chris Whyte: Reminiscence Vic Firth 2024-04-22 | Reminiscence (2002) by Toshio Hosokawa (b. 1955) Recorded with VF Giff Howarth Signature Series M160, M161, and M163. Toshio Hosokawa composed Reminiscence in 2002 for Kunihiko Komori, who subsequently gave its premiere at Toyko Opera City Recital Hall in Tokyo on December 17, 2002. This enigmatic, often un-idiomatic work for solo marimba explores the dark, low register of the instrument, proceeding through slowly-evolving harmonies, returning often to brooding diminished chords at points of resolve. After brief moments of repose, the texture suddenly takes on a new shape, at once both measured and arhythmic. Hosokawa doubles down on the escapist-nature of the harmonic foundations, simultaneously establishing the gravity of Eb with the wavering nature of the octatonic scale. Eventually the instability subsides in a Mahler-like alternation of Eb minor and Eb major, eventually giving way to the final resolution in the major key. Taken as a whole, Reminiscence poses some seemingly existential questions, inviting us to live within an active and inactive tension until the eventual release finally arrives. Christopher Whyte: A Cold Stability Vic Firth 2023-11-20 | “A Cold Stability” draws its origins from the process of wine making, moving through four stages: the grapes and skins (drums), just at their peak ripeness before harvest, ready to burst, bubbling, popping, alive; the precision machines (metals) which sort and crush the fruit with angular precision, direction, brightness; the oak barrels (woods) in which the wine rests and evolves, imparting warmth, character, maturity, and finally the glass bottles and wine glasses where it finds harmony, clarity, stability, and concludes its journey. The electronics component of the piece is created using Ableton Live, which enables the processing of live sound manipulation and effects. All of the sonic elements of the piece are created in real time, without pre-recorded elements. The title refers to cold stabilization, the final stage of bottling in which some wines are chilled to temperatures as close to freezing as possible in order to prevent the formation of tartaric acid crystals. Upon reflection of this process, I am struck by the way most phenomena around us must be stripped of their energy and heat in order to achieve stability, whether natural, social, or intellectual. The yearly cyclical process for wine makers of transforming a volatile natural substance into a carefully crafted, intricate, and artistic product is not unlike composing or learning a new piece. Festivalero - Jason Gianni Vic Firth 2023-11-07 | Newly recorded at the end of 2021, drummer Jason Gianni plays along with his drum track for Venezuelan Joropo band, Compasses, for their amazing song 'Festivalero.' Initially recorded as a side-by-side demo video last year, the song was officially recorded recently and here is a finished play-along video. This is a very interesting combination of traditional Venezuelan Joropo (harp, maracas, bass and the two stringed-instruments, bandola and cuatro) mixed with very modern progressive arrangements by the members of Compasses.
