The strategy failed. Repeatedly.
Sega’s time in the 1990s was marked by a meteoric rise and multiple failed consoles after the Genesis. In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at three canceled consoles: The Pluto, Neptune, and Jupiter. In doing so, we’re going to discuss why these consoles failed, and what these failures tell us about Sega’s rise and fall.

The North American home console market had declined 97%, but Nintendo had the vision and gumption to try and change the world. Their Famicom became a massive hit in Japan, and after overcoming numerous obstcules – including skeptical retailers, deeply cynical customers, and, you know, racism – the Nintendo Entertainment System would own the world, setting the stage for the video games we know and love today.
At the same time, the seeds of future console wars were being planted. After numerous false starts, Sega made a hit with the Master System, and while they didn’t match Nintendo's success in this generation, they were setting the stage for later.
Other former giants tried – and mostly failed. Atari, Commodore, Epoch and more created systems, but only the Atari 7800 made a dent on the market – just barely.
Welcome to the Third Generation of Video Games.

There was no worse feeling.
In today's video, we're reviewing seven of the worst Super Nintendo games ever made, including Pit Fighter, Rise of the Robots, Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball, Bebe's Kids, Batman Forever, Space Ace, and Home Alone. These games were just terrible: Badly converted, janky animations, non-existent frame rate, busted controllers, and more.
Enjoy! Or, at least, enjoy more than you enjoyed playing these games!

The E.T. video game was one of the worst.
In today’s video, we discuss how Atari took the most popular entertainment product at the time, and then proceeded to screw it up so badly. It wasn’t the fault of the programmer or designer (it usually isn’t), but the result of bad corporate decisions and a mad dash to cash on on a property that was one of the best selling in the world.
The E.T. game was a disaster for Atari, contributed to the company’s demise, and was a factor in the 1983 video game crash. It also led to the creation of the most incredible video game story of the generation: That hundreds of thousands of copies of the agme were buried in a New Mexico landfill.
Of course, that story is very, very true.
In today’s video, we discuss why E.T. was so bad, what that meant for Atari, and just how all of those games wound up in a New Mexico landfill.

Other filming disasters included major temper tantrums from actors (Dennis Hopper), broken fingers (Bob Hoskins) and drinking before – and during – filming (Hoskins and John Leguizamo). The end result was a movie so bad it kept Nintendo out of the movie business for literal decades – yet, a film that, yes, despite it all, still has its fans.
This is the story of Super Mario Bros. (1993) – the movie that probably never should have been made.

When it first came out in 1986, Metroid broke a TON of boundaries: New game, new hero, new genre. It’s complex map, new worlds, atmospheric music and deeply disturbing universe were SO different than anything else Nintendo had produced at the time, and it set the stage for a wild new game.
In today’s video, we review the development of Metroid, Samus Aran, the Space Pirates, and more. Topics covered include its inspiration (Alien, Aliens, and two Kim Bassinger films…?), five endings, and how Samus became a woman (not a political statement!).

The story of Donkey Kong is a strange one. The game literally saved Nintendo of America, but was changed repeatedly…then forgotten about. Indeed, for years, the property looked dead.
That all changed thanks to the incredibly technical creativity of Rare and the Stamper Brothers of Twycross, England, who imbued Donkey Kong with new technology and found numerous ways to reinvent the classic franchise.
It's thanks to Rare’s incredible innovations that Donkey Kong became one of Nintendo’s best selling franchises.
In today’s video, we talk about how Rare saved Donkey Kong, introduced it to multiple new genres…only to have it fade away (again).

However, it almost wasn’t to be. Nintendo of America barely survived the failed launch of Radar Scope, and Donkey Kong was given little chance of success by almost everyone involved with it.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo proved everyone wrong, and the game became Nintendo’s greatest hit to date. Furthermore, after the game’s success, Nintendo had to fight off a lawsuit from Universal Studios that was so massive it threatened to take the company down entirely. However, Nintendo stuck to their guns, and in so doing, took down an entertainment giant – and set themselves up for long-term success.
This is the story of Donkey Kong.

- Why was Tyson added – then removed from the game?
- How did Mario get snuck into the game as a referee?
- Why did the game need to develop an entirely new graphics chip for the cartridge?
- What player had his name changed to avoid referring to alcohol (and maybe avoid some blatant stereotyping)?
- How many different final bad guys are there from the original game (Answer: Three)?
- Why did it take 22 years for one Easter Egg to be discovered?
- How do you access the secret circuit?
…and much, much more.

The market would become oversaturated and eventually crash, but not before creating the foundation for what we know today.
In today’s video, we review the first ever home console systems, including the Magnavox Odyssey, the Coleco Telstar, the Sears/Atari Home Pong, the Color TV Series, and a few handhelds, like the Merlin. We also discuss the various smaller systems that…you know, helped crash the industry (the first time).
Enjoy!

Nick Arcade was a classic – and sadly short-lived – Nickelodeon show.
Airing in 1992, the show produced 84 episodes which features video game challenges, questions…and the chance to play inside of a massive virtual reality video game. This amazing show was tailor-made for video game fans who desperately wanted MORE video games and the chance to spend more time with their favorite pastime.
In today’s video, we review Nick Arcade, the classic Nick show that put you inside of a video game.

The code – invented by programmer and game designer Kazuhisa Hashimoto – was developed for one simple reason: Hashimoto’s games were too hard for even him to master!
Here’s a look at the history behind the Konami Code, why it has endured for so long, and what games, music, and even children’s toys – you can find it in.

The ability of a video game to be truly timeless isn’t necessarily a result of its graphics. Instead, a game’s replayability is ultimately influenced by its creativity, replayability, and boundary-pushing use of available technology. In today’s video, we review seven Nintendo & Super Nintendo games that still hold up remarkably well today, including Contra, the Adventures of Lolo, Castlevania, Super Metroid, Baseball Simulator 1000, Earthbound, and Gradius III.

Ahh, you naïve youth, you.
Here’s the thing: Pinball has a ton of gambling origins. It started gaining popularity in America in the 1930s, and almost immediately pivoted to becoming a straight-up gambling device, not to dissimilar to slot machines.
That – combined with a ton of mafia control over the devices – led to pinball bans across the country, and a startling moral panic…albeit not one completely without merit!
In today’s video, we’re going to discuss the surprising controversy surrounding pinball, including its roots as a moral panic and what kind of merit that moral panic had.
