Although these all have different weight and balance, the mechanics of the movement are pretty much the same. The heavier weight essentially amplifies mistakes that may occur with the lighter weighted objects.
The aim of the exercise is to connect and swing an object using whole body movement rather than just arms.

Many martial artists use club and mace swinging techniques as a way of improving strength, wrestling and fighting with weapons. Good mace swinging is also a form of meditation in movement.

Due to the low number of travellers, we thought this would be a good opportunity to visit one of the most touristic spots in Thailand - PhiPhi Island and specifically Maya Bay, where the classic film The Beach (with Leonardo DiCaprio) was filmed.
This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this beach so quiet, what an amazing experience!

If you are in Thailand and you like waterfalls this is a must!
We arrived at Erawan Waterfalls early morning and had the place all to ourselves! There are 7 stages of waterfalls, all with different characteristics and all are lovely to swim in! My favourite is probably stage 3 and 5.

The below suburi are used:
11th Jo Suburi - Katate Gedan Gaeshi (one handed strike with low reversal)
12th Jo Suburi - Katate Toma Uchi (one handed strike at a distance)
13th Jo Suburi - Katate Hachi No Ji Gaeshi (one handed figure eight strike)
14th Jo Suburi - Hasso Gaeshi Uchi (Figure eight turn, then strike)
The 11th and 13th suburi can be joined by using the 12th suburi on the opposite side. The second strike in the 13th suburi transitions into the 14th suburi. After this strike the sequence can be repeated on the other side.
The video is shown in slow motion at 50% and at normal speed.

There were so many amazing locations that I visited, however this video focuses on my top three favourite places to visit:
Rubha Shlèite: A beautiful and isolated beach that looks like it should be in the Mediterranean.
The Fairy Pools: A river with rock pools connected with waterfalls.
The Old Man of Storr: A mountain side rock formation.
If you have any questions about these locations please ask in the comments below.

This is one of my favourite beaches I've been to. Really quiet, peaceful and isolated. A great place to train! I couldn't resist filming some clips of staff spinning whilst I was there.
I am using a Gora Acro Staff in this video. Its a bit slow when it comes to spinning due to its heavy weight but fantastic for those who do acro and contact staff. It's got great balance and durability.
Any ideas where I may have filmed this?

I cover four basic modes which I personally consider foundational movements for Indian club swinging / spinning. These are inspired from flow arts and Tai Chi. They are based on timing and direction and can be applied in several ways. More of these types of exercise can be found on Nick Woolsey's channel below.

I explore these modes will extended arms moving in parallel, split-parallel, anti-parallel (horizontal and vertical).

The Aiki-Jo developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei) is a method of using Japanese staff techniques to teach the principles of Aikido.
There are 20 basic staff movements which form part of the Iwama Ryu syllabus. These were developed by Morihiro Saito for solo practice with a Jo (4ft Staff).
In this video I cover a direct middle level thrust (Choku zuki) and a reversed thrust (Kaeshi zuki) from the thrusting suburi series (Tsuki no bu). I also talk about high thrusts.

The Aiki-Ken developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei) is a method of using Japanese sword techniques to teach the principles of Aikido.
There are 7 basic sword movements which form part of the Iwama Ryu syllabus. These were developed by Morihiro Saito for solo practice with a bokken (wooden sword).
In this video I cover the 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th ken suburi.
1. Ichi-No-Suburi
Raise and cut downward.
5. Go-No-Suburi
Guard and step forward off line with a downward cut.
6. Roku-No-Suburi
Guard and step forward off line with a downward cut, then shuffle forward and thrust.
7. Shichi-No-Suburi
Guard and step forward off line with a downward cut, then step forward with a thrust.
I also cove the first two movements of happogiri.

The shape formed by this antispin is a type of Hypocycloid called a Octcuspid, meaning 8 cusps. The staff creates this pattern using 8 points.
A prerequisite for this is the 4 point and 6 point anti-spin.
This can be performed with a Jo staff, however smaller staves can create quicker rotations.
This type of movement is more common with Poi in Flow arts however there are martial applications buried within the movements.

The shape formed by this antispin is a type of Hypocycloid called a Hexcuspid, meaning 6 cusps. The staff creates a Triquetra (3 petal) type of movement with each end of the staff on the horizontal. This forms 6 petals in total.
This can be performed with a Jo staff, however a Bo staff may be proportionally too big for this movement.
The same principles from this movement can be applied to clubs or other object manipulation props. This type of movement is more common with Poi in Flow arts however there are martial applications buried within the movements.

You can do this movement using a Bo staff however it is best performed with the Jo staff due to the correct proportions to the body.
The shape formed by this antispin is a type of Hypocycloid called a Tetracuspid, meaning 4 cusps. This also known as an Astroid or Cubocycloid in Mathematics.
The same principles from this movement can be applied to clubs or other object manipulation props. This a common move used in Flow arts however there are martial applications buried within the movements.

I show antispin and inspin principles with a ball & chain, Jo staff, Indian club and sabre. I also explain the martial application with weapons. This is
demonstrated with the 15th Jo Suburi and the 1st and 5th Ken Suburi.
These principles can be applied to many other weapons used by martial artists or props used by flow artists for object manipulation.

By using a ball & chain, jo staff, indian club and longsword, I explain isolation principles when spinning an object or using a weapon. I also show how a thrust can come from a circular movement such as the 15th Jo Suburi.
These principles can be used in a martial application and with other weapons such as a rope dart or meteor hammer. They can also be used by flow artists for object manipulation with various props.
I hope you find the video useful and as always if you have any questions leave them in the comments below. :)

#isolation #weaponprinciples #aikiflow
By using a jo staff, heavy indian club, sabre and iron ball, I explain three principles which will help create a lighter feeling when spinning, swinging or using weapons. The first part looks at structure and how it is important to maintain a good posture. The second part addresses alignment with the weapon or object. The third part links all three with connection through body movement and feeling the weight and getting behind it. A combination of all three aspects create a feeling of lightness when using the weapon or spinning an object.
These principles can be used in a martial application and with other weapons such as swords and bo staff. The can also be used by spinners in flow arts, particular the connection aspect that touches on isolations.
I hope you find the video useful and as always if you have any questions leave them in the comments below. :)
