Since then, I’ve replaced the original blast gates with my automated ball-valve versions, but most of the ducting itself has remained relatively unchanged.
The system worked pretty well, but there were still a few areas where I thought it could be improved particularly the amount of flexible hose, some restrictive connections, and how difficult it was to modify the layout.
So, I designed a new range of modular, 3D-printed fittings that integrate with my existing flange system and standard PVC pipe. In this video, I break down how the system works, replace some of the more restrictive parts of my ducting, and test whether any of it actually improves the airflow.
The final result was an 18% improvement in airflow, along with a system that is much easier to modify, expand and adapt as my workshop changes.

Over the last few years I've slowly been building my workshop one project at a time.
The one thing I now know is that not every project needs to reinvent the wheel or be this incredible one of a kind thing. Sometimes it's simply about making the space a little better than it was yesterday.
In this video I build a set of workshop shelves, which on it's own is pretty dull however it's more about what these shelves represent for me, the projects that got me here, and why even the "boring" jobs deserve a place in the journey.

While there are plenty of great box joint jigs already out there, there were two designs in particular that really inspired me. The first was @woodfather template-based system, which makes creating different finger layouts incredibly simple. The second was @matthiaswandel screw-driven advancement mechanism, which allows the work piece to be positioned quickly and accurately.
So I set out to see if I could combine those two ideas into a single jig.
The result is this box joint jig, featuring interchangeable templates, a screw-driven advancement system, and a digital readout for precise positioning—all while using a standard saw blade.
In this video I'll show you how I built it, how it works, and some of the design decisions that shaped the final result.

When you’ve got a small workshop, it’s pretty common to have your machines on wheels. It makes it easy to move tools into position when you need them, and tuck them away when you don’t.
The downside though, is that most mobile bases use two swivel wheels and two fixed wheels. That means turning or moving them sideways often turns into a bit of a ‘20-point turn’… which isn’t ideal in a tight space.
I looked into buying an omnidirectional base, but even the cheaper options were pushing over $200 AUD. So I figured with a set of workbench casters, I should be able to build one myself for under $50?

So many of you have been asking about expanding the project, adding more gates, improving reliability, and more importantly adding some real smarts to the system so the gates and dust collector can operate automatically.
So for the past few months that's exactly what I've been doing. Asking the question “what if?” and going down a fairly deep rabbit hole of electronics, microcontrollers, wireless modules, and automation.
The result is a new version of the system that moves beyond simple remote control and starts laying the foundation for a fully automatic dust collection setup.
In this video I'll walk through the updated design, the new electronics, and how the system works.
This is still very much an evolving project, but what we now have is the basis of what could become a really robust automated dust collection system for the workshop.

I get a lot of requests to review lasers, and most of the time my answer is a polite “no.” Not because I don’t love lasers, I do. They’re one of the most useful tools in my shop, but let’s be honest… laser review videos are usually pretty boring.
So when Monport reached out and said, “Hey, want to try our largest desktop laser?”, I was ready to pass. But then I realised it was a CO₂ laser, not another diode, and suddenly my interest was piqued.
There are projects I’ve wanted to tackle for nearly a year, but couldn’t because my diode laser simply can’t cut certain materials. A CO₂ laser changes that completely, so I jumped at the chance to learn something new.
This series isn’t a review, it’s about what I discover moving from years of diode-laser use into the world of CO₂, the setup, the learning curve, and all that. All while working on a few projects that I know you guys have been asking me to revisit.
But before I can dig into any of that, I needed to rebuild my laser cart and enclosure, because the new machine simply doesn’t fit. This video covers that process: giving the Monport Reno 65 Pro a proper home and laying the groundwork for the projects to come.

The existing laser cut ones work incredibly well, but take up a large footprint, whether they are open or closed, hindering access to tools and reducing accessible areas.
So I've been working on a ball valve design, that not only solves my gate profile issues, but is also remote controlled and best yet, this design requires NO soldering, NO wiring, and NO coding!
I also made versions that are manually controlled for those (and myself) that don't need a remote controlled blast gate at every location!

However, that joy is quickly overshadowed by the realisation that it's either not available where you live, is too expensive, or worse both!
I stumbled across the Woodpeckers Joinery Sled, and unfortunately it's not available here yet, and more over, is going to cost well over $600 for it.
So I did the only thing I could think of. Design and make my own!
After many hours in CAD, 3 trial builds and testing, I finally landed on version 2.0 which is proving to be everything I'd hoped for and more!
Featuring bevel adjustment, dovetail clamping, micro adjustments and a feature not even the red tool has, a digital DRO feature!
In this video, I cover building my prototype, some of the issues I ran into and challenges, as well as a few changes I made.

This is the first video in a series, but it almost ended up being the last. During the build, I had a scary incident when some oil-soaked rags that caught fire. Thankfully, the damage was minimal, but it was a powerful reminder to never get complacent about safety.

The only issue is that it gets incredibly annoying to have to move it constantly around. It often gets in the way, and creates a tripping hazard as pipes and power cords lay across the shop.
Inspired by what I saw Eric @SpencleyDesignCo do in his shop, I thought I'd make my own boom arms with of course my own twist to it.
While simple in concept and relatively simple to build, this boom arms have been amazing!

My mitre saw is too small, the mitre gauge on the table saw isn't that much better, and my crosscut sled can't handle panels without modification or replacement. So what's the solution?
I was inspired by @MakeSomething to give making a sliding mitre panel accessory for my table saw a go. After a few teething issues, the end result allows me to cross-cut almost double what I was able to before.
Is this the ultimate table saw accessory? That's probably a stretch, but it has me thinking that I probably won't be replacing my mitre saw if the day comes it dies.

I've not had my shop long enough to accumulate too much clutter, however I do have a pile of very special timber boards in my garage, that need to start finding new homes and new projects.
In this video I create something special for one of my sisters, and at the same time tell you a little about the history of my town, as well as the association my family has with this timber.

When it comes to sawdust that's ejected in the air, the table saw is the worst offender in my shop.
While my table saw did come with a dust hood, it is, by all definitions, terrible, and I think we can certainly do better.
So over the last few weeks I've been tinkering away and have come up with this dust hood design which fits onto my existing riving knife.
It's a simple design, utilising only a few easy to source components:
6MM MDF 3MM PVC Clear Sheeting (you can opt for perspex or acrylic if you really want) EVA Foam Sheet M8 Furniture Bolts (optional, you can use just plain screws) M5 Threaded inserts (optional if you don't plan on having a second screen) M5/M8 star handle bolts / caps.
The final design works pretty well, there's probably a little room for improvement, but there is no longer any dust that will be flung into the air, which is a win in my books.

DESCRIPTION: For some time now, I've had issues with my dust collector performance. While my dust collector is over spec'd for my space, I've never really felt like I was getting optimal performance from it.
Upon closer investigation, I discovered a number of inefficiencies and problems. Inefficient ducting, too much flex hose, the wrong choice of fittings and more.

It's a new year which means it's time to get back into the shop once again. At the end of last year I'd been having a lot of fun working with my AlgoLaser Delta Laser machine, and during that time it's been living on a temporary table in my workshop.
It's not ideal to have such a machine not protected and most importantly without any sort of ventilation system to channel those laser fumes outside.
So in today's video that's the next problem I'm tackling: building a mobile laser enclosure with air extraction!
This was a fun, challenging build that I think now looks great in the shop.

Not long ago, I dived into the world of CNC as a complete newbie to learn what it takes to understand one of the internet's most controversial tools. Today we keep that theme running, as it's now time to discover CNC's twin sibling and delve into the world of LASERS!
So just how easy is it to get up to speed in the world of lasering? How long does it take from unboxing to cutting? Thanks to the folks over at AlgoLaser I got the chance to find out with the AlgoLaser Delta 22W!

I’ve been itching to experiment with pattern plywood in larger panels for some time and I thought this might be a great project to try it on.

DESCRIPTION: In the last video I build a wood storage cart and semi-retired the temporary shelves to hold a few tools and other odds and ends. It's now time to permanently retire the shelves with something more useful.
While I want these to be permanent, I still want to have some flexibility if I wanted to change things around, or add new features. Thus I designed this module system that allows me to hopefully allow for any future possibilities!

I took this challenge to heart and scrounged up all the formply offcuts I'd accumulated over the past year from numerous projects and set out to build something unique.
I've never build a clock before, I've never used a CNC, never done wood kerf bending, and never tried more complex pattern plywood before, but we'll tackle all of that in one project.

Originally it was planned to use hardwood, however once I calculated the quantity required, and price it would cost to acquire, then I knew an alternative solution was needed.
Thus I wondered if humble formply could be the solution. It's never occurred to me to see if you could incorporate what is essentially a construction material into furniture building. Can it be done, or more importantly can it look good?
Well I did do it, and you be the judge on whether you like it or not.
