This shot on 16 mm film from 1985 shows a stop-motion Brachiosaurus. Also, if you look at the backgrounds, you can tell that it is actually magazine cut-outs, posters, or cut outs from a calendar because of the glossiness thanks to the lighting. You can totally see the creases. So this is not a 35 mm slide projected on a screen, and this is not a live-action footage projected one frame at a time on a 16 mm motion analysis projector. Lamont 2025-06-22 | From the maker of the SPFX Magazine commercial with King Kong that was shot on Super-8 comes another homemade ad done with this style. This one is for Alkaseltzer and it has dinosaurs in it. Dinosaurs made from the Aurora model kit series. However, the thing is, the two creatures in this commercial are from different time zones. The Allosaurus is from the Mesozoic era and the Dimetrodon is from the Paleozoic era. So they didn’t live in the same period. (Somewhere a paleontologist is displeased.) Why if this was done today, there would be a Spinosaurus. Stop-Motion Rarities: “Timegate” (1979) by Jim Danforth. Matthew B. Lamont 2025-06-15 | Before STARGATE (1994), before JURASSIC PARK (1993), there was TIMEGATE. The idea was conceived by Jim Danforth. He had this idea since he was a teenager when he made his amateur film, A SNITCH IN TIME back in the 1950s. The time to make it a big Hollywood picture came after the failure of Universal Pictures obtaining the rights of the original KING KONG. Universal wanted to make their own version called THE LEGEND OF KING KONG, with Jim Danforth in charge of the special effects. Specifically the stop-motion animation. However, since that picture didn’t get made, it was time for Jim to create a movie that would put his stop-motion skills, as well as his film-making skills, to the test (if producers were interested). The result was TIME GATE. It was about a time-traveling safari company called Chronex, that goes back in time to see dinosaurs. There is a man who goes in order to avenge someone who was killed by a T-Rex causing the beast to run amok the futuristic civilization. This is like a futuristic version of THE LOST WORLD, just like how THE VALLEY OF GWANGI is a western retelling of it. Somehow, it brings to mind L. Spargue DeCamp’s “A Gun for Dinosaur” and Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder.” His locations were scouted, the script was written, and test footage was shot. Who will finance the picture? Nobody. Why? Because it was too expensive. Had it been made, it give an Academy Award for Best Special Effects. So here it is, the greatest movie never made: TIMEGATE (1979). Lamont 2025-05-31 | You know, between the time the original KING KONG and SON OF KONG came out and the original MIGHTY JOE YOUNG got released (i.e. between 1933 to 1949), there wasn’t a single stop-motion animated feature-film made in Hollywood. Sure there was George Pal’s Puppetoons, but they were short subjects. Ray Harryhausen was exercising his stop-motion film-making skills with EVOLUTION OF THE WORLD (1938-1940). There was THE LOST ATLANTIS (1937-1940), which was Columbia Pictures’ attempt to cash-in on the success of the original KING KONG. MGM’s epic that never was, WAR EAGLES by the people who did the original KING KONG. United Artists scrapped the stop-motion dinosaurs in favor of decorated lizards and gators because they looked so real in Hal Roach’s prehistoric masterpiece, ONE MILLION B.C. (1940). Willis O’Brien tried to get his cowboys vs. dinosaur flick, GWANGI green lighted in 1942. Guess what? They all never happened! So did MONSTERS ON THE MOON. In 1942, Lou Bunin and Michael Myerberg were at Universal Pictures to do an adaptation of Robert Wagner’s 14 hour opera cycle, THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG. That was scrapped because of World War 2. Another one that was scrapped was another Willis O’Brien project, GWANGI in 1942. That project for RKO was reworked by Warner Bros. in 1969. Stop-Motion Rarities: Adventures of Toys (Second Film) by Katsuo Takahashi (1968). Matthew B. Lamont 2024-12-08 | “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” (1964) happens to be one of the craziest ideas ever put on celluloid. “Frankenstein Conquers the World” (1965) was a successful film at the box-office in Japan, but it didn’t make a lot of money as “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962). However, this made Baragon become popular among the kaiju community. He has gained a strong following since his Frankenstein battle. Over the years, before making a cameo appearance in such anime like “Urusei Yatsura” and “Dragon Ball” he got caricatured and lampooned in all sorts of media in Japan. For instance, in the manga, “Kaibutsukun” there was a character modeled after Baragon called Nombilas. He appeared in a story where he met Franken and there was production for a movie called “Franken vs. Gabegebo”. This story was adapted in the anime in both the 60s black and white version and the 80s color version. Here, in this film you are going to watch, the monster is modeled after Baragon. And like “Frankenstein Conquers the World”, he appears as a villain. He fought Frankenstein in 1968, now he will fight Santa! Who will win. OK, that aside, this film was made in 1968 and got released in 1970 for the Japan Expo. This was made for promoting exchanges with foreign countries and letting the world know about Japan, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO or JETO). This was introduces the Japanese toy industry to the world. The art is done by Iinuma Sawako, the animation is done by Nasu Masayo, and the live-action was done by Fukui Hisahiko and Nozaki Yoshihiko. This concludes season nine of “Stop-Motion Rarities”. Reference to the Oxygen Destroyer? Well, no. Stop-motion animation. That’s right, if the swinging tail and crashing firetruck is one thing, then those little Destroyah crabs scurrying across the frame is another. These were animated by Koichi Kawakita. This was also a Dynamation-type shot because the background is with projected one frame at a time, like in those Ray Harryhausen movies, or it was done with compositing with an optical printer. This was the last time that stop-motion was used in a Godzilla movie. Lamont 2024-11-23 | In the years that followed between 1964 to 1989, Toho would steer clear from putting stop-motion in their visual effects. Sometimes they would fake it. Remember when I talked about “Godzilla Raids Again”, where I talked about how they faked stop-motion. Well, they did again in “Mothra vs. Godzilla” (1964) and again in “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” (1971). Speaking of which, it said that the flower wilting in that 1971 trippy film was stop-motion. That what it said on page 356 of “Ray Harryhausen: Master of Majicks Volume 1”, by Mike Hankin. Page 358 of this said, stop-motion was used in “Godzilla 1985” where Godzilla’s eye opened after being struck by lightning. We don’t know if that is true or not. Moving on, when “Godzilla vs. Biollante” was going into production, the special effects team was going think if stop-motion would be the right choice to do the entire effects with stop-motion. Lamont 2024-11-17 | You know, back in the late 1950’s, Willis O’Brien, a stop-motion animator, had an idea to let King Kong make a comeback. Have him fight a giant Frankenstein Monster made up of animal parts in San Francisco. He wrote a script and sent it to John Beck, a film producer, and screwed him over and the result, was “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962). Obie was upset and Merrian C. Cooper, the man who created King Kong back in 1933, was livid! However, back in Japan, good old Eiji Tsuburaya, who is a big fan of the original “King Kong”, that he got inspired to pay homage to the film in his films and TV shows, decided to add in stop-motion animation in a few scenes. They were animated by Minoru Nakano. Lamont 2024-11-09 | Take a good look here on this heart-pounding episode of “Stop-Motion Rarities”. In this scene from “Godzilla Raids Again” (a.k.a. “Gigantis the Fire Monster”) (1955), as Godzilla and Anguiras fight in Osaka in such excessive speed, you can see the palace pagoda crack up. Now according to page 354 of the book “Ray Harryhausen: Master of Majicks Volume 1”, by Mike Hankin, the cracking was done by using chalk or withe paint. It is also possible that Minoru Nakano was responsible for this shot. Having the monsters fight with the camera under cranked, doesn’t pass for stop-motion animation. It is faking it. Lamont 2024-09-28 | Today on another enjoyable, yet pleasant, episode of “Stop-Motion Rarities”, we take a look at “Youkoso Uchuujin” (1966), which means “Welcome Aliens” (don’t worry, this one has subtitles). Yes, that right, there are aliens along with a lion, a mouse, and a dinosaur. A dinosaur?! Say, this was made around the time when that cartoon, “The Flintstones” (1960-1966) and the movie “One Million Years B.C.” (1966). Say, this looks fun (for the whole family). Just like last week’s episode and the one for the week before. Even next week’s! Don’t look at me. It’s those aliens, right? Look, when I made “The Visitors” back in 2009, I didn’t get inspiration from those two. The tall thing smart guy and the short goofy-looking guy. I didn’t get if off of them, because I didn’t know that this short, “Youkoso Uchuujin” existed. It was just at the top of my head because I modeled (no pun intended) them in the same manner that Jimmy Picker models his characters. Some day, I would love to animate a stop-motion model with an armature. Even if it has a ball and socket armature. Enjoy. Stop-Motion Rarities: Son of Kong (Italian Dub) by Luigi Cozzi (circa. 1976). Matthew B. Lamont 2024-06-09 | OK, as you can see and hear, this is the Italian dub of SON OF KONG (1933), that was created by Luigi Cozzi in 1976. You notice that in some scenes, Little Kong or Kiko, (or King Kong Junior as he is called in this dub), had different grunts. In some scenes you see him move his lips, but you hear nothing. Also, can you hear the 1975 record of the King Kong soundtrack by Max Steiner and conducted by Leroy Holmes? You heard it in some kung fu movies. I have a feeling that this feels like an underground film with a budget. Stop-Motion Rarites: RKO Color Footage (circa. 1933-1936). Matthew B. Lamont 2024-05-25 | For the 100th episode (yes, I have been counting) of Stop-Motion Rarities, I have found this animation of Delores Del Rio on her pool and the cave monster from SON OF KONG (you can say that this creature is the ancestor of such monsters as the Rhedosaurus from THE BEAST FROM 20'000 FATHOMS (1953) and Shimo from the Monsterverse film, GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE). Now I don't know who animated it. It could be either Willis O'Brien (who was at the worst time of his life back then), Pete Peterson, or Buzz Gibson. This footage was found and was shown in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.Enjoy. Lamont 2024-05-04 | Inspired by the works of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen, as well as other movies that were inspired by these two, whether they be amateur or professional, like EQUINOX (1970), JACK THE GIANT KILLER (1962), or WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH (1970), Richard Geiwitz made this film of sword and sorcery with creatures. He not only written and directed it, but did the stop-motion effects to with the help of Larry Schlechter. Stop-Motion Rarities: Unknown Dinosaur Footage (1937). Matthew B. Lamont 2024-04-13 | It is unknown who made it. Since this was made in 1937, it can't be Virginia May. It could possibly be rare outtakes from the 1925 version of THE LOST WORLD. But wait, this could be the work of Jospeh L. Roop, who made animated films with prehistoric monsters before THE LOST WORLD. Or after. I am thinking that it was early test footage by Edward Nassour and Walter Lantz made for the unmade epic, THE LOST ATLANTIS.
