Like the only people who are all-in on their duty is Ludleth, who is as slimy as they come, and the Soul of Cinder, just this faceless goliath that represents the experiences of players past, but mindlessly engaging with past tropes to pretend the future will be as bright as everything that came before even as the world is literally crumbling to ash around them. I chose to bring about the Age of Dark not just because I was basically only using Black Flame at the end of the game, but also because Lothric needed the cleanest of slates. After all, even if you plunge the world into darkness, there's still a flicker of an ember on the horizon. It will return, and perhaps by then, enough denizens will actually have missed it to find a healthier way to engage with Fire, rather than keeping it around out of equal parts fear, desire, hubris and exhaustion.Anyway here's more recent DLC, it doesn't matter how good it is or where it came from, it exists and that's enough to say Rock Band is still around.

Now, not to kill JW's buzz, but if I were a recording artist in an era of music notorious for being financially unsustainable, I'd have to wonder how much of a PR opportunity appearing in a videogame would be if the ability to play that game is entirely vestigial, and inaccessible to a new audience. He literally says you gotta buy a guitar controller on eBay to play his song. Is that what he calls success? Appearing in a game dependent on hardware support it will never receive again? Being part of a product whose growth in popularity is literally, technically, impossible? How many fans of JW Francis will have the opportunity to play his song in Rock Band 4, and how many people playing Rock Band 4 are going to become fans of JW Francis? I know I'm a sourgrapes in these descriptions lmao but I think this does kind of cut to the heart of why my view of RB in 2023 is so callous; if the above clip is the most amount of joy a recording artist can get from being included in RB4, with all these qualifiers that basically allude to the game's dim popularity, then like what are we even doing here? None of these qualifiers existed when Hozier was talking up his involvement in GOW Ragnarok, and that's a fucking PS5 game which was almost as impossible to find as new RB guitars for years. None of the singers involved in Metal Hellsinger had to say "sorry, you can't get this game on Switch", even though you can't get Metal Hellsinger on this generation's biggest console (They should be complaining about the soundtrack being unavailable tbh). Skrillex didn't have to warn anyone that the ending to Kingdom Hearts 3 sucked ass at launch...although it did. But JW Francis had to warn people wanting to play a game he was in that they would have to get a second-hand controller from eBay or Amazon. In a post-COVID world where any imported goods are far more expensive now, especially games and related products. For a game that is, technically speaking, last-gen.

Yes, this song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has nearly half a billion streams, but...does anyone actually like this? I'm meeting objective facts with a wishy washy subjective statement here, but at the same time, the sanctity of Billboard stats has never been more in doubt than right now, and that is saying something. They've locked almost all their stats behind a paywall, their metrics for what makes a song a "hit" are arcane and ever-changing, hence why Aaron Lewis is officially bigger than Muse. And that's without getting into the wider issues of things like stream bots, astroturf campaigns for songs like Yummy and abcdefu, recent AI nonsense, or the general creative bankruptcy of relying on the same samples for nostalgic recognition. Ahem. Also half this song is just missing in the radio edit. Even WAP sounds more complete through the airwaves.Also also also also also this song is produced by Dr Luke, which wouldn't be relevant if not for the fact that Harmonix themselves said they would not get a song produced by Dr Luke, hence why the one Katy Perry song we have is a bit weird. But no even before then, this was one of Ghost's biggest songs. Huh??? How did this beat out Kiss The Go-Goat when that song was the centerpiece of the entire promotional cycle behind Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic?...And is a million times better? I guess as the one Ghost superfan who doesn't like most of their poppier songs I should have expected to feel left out. Spillways is awesome though, I'd love to get that as DLC. Or you know, anything from Impera and not just another bloody screamo-metalcore band you and I have never heard of.
Anything Was Better by The Interrupters Full Band FC #5728 Team Aftermath 2023-06-30 | Decent song, exceptionally mehsome pick as DLC. I said this before I legit believe She's Kerosene would have been DLC if not for the coronavirus. The Interrupters were set to open for the Hella Mega Tour, announced at the end of 2019 and much hyped, and that would have turned their radio single at the time from decently popular into, well, as big a hit as rock radio can get you nowadays, I guess. For obvious reasons none of that ever happened. For less obvious reasons, we got a song of theirs that has 1.4 million streams on Spotify rather than any of theirs songs that have at least ten million. But hey they have a song in the game, you can't complain the game has *no* Interrupters even if isn't any Interrupters people would actually ask for, which is a bit like saying it's good that Rise Of Skywalker exists because if it didn't we'd have an incomplete new trilogy.

This convert changed nothing and only added the last two instruments needed, and it's a bit of a catch-22. I don't like putting fellow creatives on blast but I'm also too old to be dishonest, this is an author that has plenty of original Mastodon charts to their name and it's hard to say that a fresh strings chart from them would be any better than the GH3 chart we already know is very bad.

I don't know why but that convinced me to give this album a shot, it's pretty good but we got prolly the third weakest song from it. Story of RB4's life.
No Apologies by Papa Roach Full Band FC #5726 Team Aftermath 2023-06-24 | Everyone is gayOkay for real this was actually the single song that pretty much killed my interest in DLC this year. Which is weird because Papa Roach are the kind of notable name I just ranted about wanting to see more of even if I've never liked them. But we managed to dodge their Imagine Dragons era, their pop-punk era, we still don't have many of their old nu-metal or post-grunge hits like Scars or Getting Away With Murder...but now HMX decided to get them? Yeah, very reassuring for the quality of the rest of the year's offerings if Papa Roach's sellout era is your lead foot forward. And so it has mostly proven.
High Society by My Kid Brother Full Band FC #5725 Team Aftermath 2023-06-23 | I believe it was Jahvon (FreshPrinceOfRB) that said "I dunno if Connor is still playing Rock Band but I'd love to see their reaction to this DLC announcement"...and yeah lol when this dropped I literally said "are you fucking kidding me" out loud. You can go back and read the description for Native Tongue as to why they probably shouldn't have even had one song in the game, let alone a second one that has 50k streams on Spotify. It did marginally better on YouTube by the standards of that platform....But again, these guys are not "up and comers", they are "go nowheres". Does anyone outside of Virginia actually follow this band? In fact, I saw a comment on the music video for this where they were pleasantly surprised by this band because they opened for Bad Suns...who are *another* low-tier pop-rock band that inexplicably has a song as DLC in the past two years. And at least Bad Suns have a few hits, it's just that they're old as fuck and we're never gonna get them to supplement the underperforming song we actually got...but even these guys make Bad Suns look like Bad Bunny. There's a fervent section of the fanbase that believes we should be happy to still be getting DLC at all, and on the face of it yes, the fact that Rock Band 4 has survived a rough launch, a bizarre expansion pack inspired by Destiny, a revolving lineup of community managers, and of course a corporate buy-out after a massively failed new IP, that's great, that's very surprising. But I would like these people to understand that as a fan, either casual or hardcore, it's almost impossible to get excited for the DLC run in itself when most new songs seem to be in this same vein of bands with no following, no fanbase, no legacy, and most importantly, no drawing power. Meanwhile, artists with actual hype behind them like Turnstile, Sleep Token, 100 gecs, Black Midi, Lorna Shore, IDLES, Code Orange, Nothing But Thieves, Polyphia, Lovejoy, K.Flay, Mac DeMarco, I Don't Know How But They Found Me, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard or even fothermucking Maneskin continue to get ignored. Whether that's because they're all impossible to get because "licensing is hard" doesn't change the fact that songs like this, L.E.S., Goodbye Good Luck, Ultraviolet, A Little Bit Better and so many others don't engender confidence in following along the DLC pipeline. I'm not even asking for A7X or Babymetal every week like so many people on Facebook seem to be doing, I just want RB to actually be representing the new frontiers of modern rock, rather than just claim to be doing that. And I don't just mean one Paramore and Foo Fighters song each this year, especially not after HMX dragged their heels on getting singles from their last albums either.I mean can you even imagine bringing an RB setup to a party for casual mostly karaoke fun, and someone being OMG MY KID BROTHER, I wanna go next, I gotta pick that song! Story doesn't quite hold up but the gunplay is really fun. These guys did the soundtrack and it goes hard. Remedy are also remaking the first two games but god knows when they'll come out, and they'll just get Poets Of The Fall for the hundredth time lol
