triclonUpdate April 14, 2020: New version 1.1! New gameplay options include infinite green shells, flat courses, and auto-items. New quality of life options include the ability to enable widescreen, disable anti-aliasing, enable music in 3 and 4 player modes, and an option to allow players to select the same characters. Please download the new version below.
This rom hack fundamentally changes how battle mode works in Mario Kart 64 into a frantic game of hot potato. Previously you had three balloons that you had to pop on each player and be the last player standing to win. This hack replaces the balloons with hit points (HP) and a countdown timer. When the battle starts, the first person hit becomes the “hot potato” and they start smoking and the timer starts counting down to zero. If another player gets hit before the countdown timer reaches zero, that player becomes the “hot potato” instead and will start smoking. This means if you are the hot potato, you need to hit someone else before the countdown timer reaches zero, leading to some fun frantic chases. Whoever is the hot potato when the counter reaches zero will briefly flash and lose 1 HP. When a player's HP reaches zero, they die. The timer then resets and waits for the next player to be hit and the whole process starts all over again. Whoever is the last player standing wins.

Whoever is the “hot potato” when the timer reaches zero loses 1 HP. -“Squish” where you need to hit, lightning shrink, and then run over the shrunken player to score. -“Capture The Flag” where you must capture a flag and bring it back to your base to score. -“Keep Away” where there is one flag to fight over and each player must try to hold onto it as long as possible. -“Zombombs” which is zombie infection but with bob-ombs. -“Shell shooter” turns Mario Kart 64 into a shooter. Combine with first person and/or respawn options for a full first person shooter experience. -"Coins" where you try to collect as many coins as you can on the course and fight others to claim their coins.

It was inspired by the Death Race in F-Zero X. Each player gets 3 hit points (HP). Spin outs, hits, getting squished, or having Lakitu picking you up causes 1 HP worth of damage. If you have 1 HP left, you turn dark to indicate one more hit will kill you so be careful. Lose all your HP, you are dead, and the course restarts in GP mode. The race will not end until one player is left standing. Kill all the players and you win, and you go to the next course in GP mode. Death Race is playable in both GP and VS modes. Console compatible. Expansion pak required. I have been working on this on and off for almost 5 years so I hope you all enjoy!
Update Mar 31, 2024! Version 2 is out! This version fixes the many crashes and bugs that existed in version 1. I have also added patches that include my "CPUs use human items" hack in Death Race for an added challenge. Get Version 2 from the download link below.

In Battle Santa 64, you play as Santa Claus trying to take back the presents stolen by Bowser, Wario, and Donkey Kong. You have five minutes to collect as many as you can. They will run away so you will need to chase them down, hit them, and pick up the presents they drop. After five minutes you will see how many you have collected, what your high score is, and can restart by holding A and B simultaneously to try again.

It is Zombies or Infection but with Bob-ombs. At the start of the match, a random player is turned into a Bob-omb and every person they hit turns into a Bob-omb as well. The non bomb players must try to survive until the timer reaches zero to win. If every player is turned into a bomb before that, the bombs win. This is still a work in progress, as I need to program in the win conditions, but as you can see, the gameplay is pretty much finished.

One little known feature The Nintendo 64 Gameshark is the ability to save and load Gameshark codes using the Controller Pak (memory card). I exported some codes to a Controller Pak then copied the Pak to my Everdrive. I then popped in the SD card from the Everdrive into my computer and opened the Pak's save file in a hex editor to see how the Gameshark stored the codes on the Controller Pak. Turns out the format was pretty simple. I then set out to see if I could reverse the entire process and import a Gameshark code from my computer to the Gameshark itself. I edited the Controller Pak save with a single Super Mario 64 Gameshark code to make Mario look metallic. In this video you will see me save the edited file back to the Everdrive's SD card, use the Everdrive to copy the modified file to the Controller Pak, copy the code from the Controller Pak to the Gameshark, and finally see the imported Gameshark code work (after a few false starts). Someday I might create a utility that lets you use your computer, an Everdrive, and a Controller Pak to import codes into the Gameshark. No longer will you have to slowly type in long codes.Infinite green shells in Battle Kart 64triclon2021-09-21 | Quick video just to show off infinite green shells in Battle Kart 64.Turkeys listening to jazztriclon2021-07-20 | Wild turkeys listening to jazz from my car's radio.Battle Kart 64 Capture the Flag - Bots are learning to playtriclon2021-05-09 | This is a demo showing work in progress on getting the battle mode CPU bots in Battle Kart 64 to actually play Capture the Flag. Here you can also see that bases and flags are now visible on the minimap! I am Mario and Luigi, Peach, and Toad are all bots. When someone (in this case me) picks up the flag, the bots will all attack whoever is holding the flag. If a bot picks up the flag, they will try to bring it to their base to score. Here you will see me pick up the flag, and then peach steal it from me and bring it to her base to score. There is still more work to do to get the bots to fully play the Capture the Flag game mode, but so far things look promising. CTF mode will be available in the next release of Battle Kart 64, so stay tuned!

I calculate the angle between me and the bots, and check the direction the bots are facing and tell them to turn until the the angle they are facing matches the angle between them and me. To make the bots move, my code hijacks the game's controller input so that the bot players are given the commands to always press A and the c-stick tilts the direction I want them to turn. Yes, this will work on a real console.

Why am I doing this? An old screenshot of beta Mario Kart 64 shows a "winter bomb" and there is some speculation about what exactly it was supposed to be (see tcrf.net/Talk:Mario_Kart_64#Winter_Bomb). In an effort to try to see if there was anything left in the rom from the beta about a "Winter Bomb" .
How does this work? I found in the rom where the bombs are rendered (it starts around 0x570DC) and found where the textures and palette are loaded. See hack64.net/Thread-Mario-Kart-64-Textures for more info on the textures and pallets. The main bomb texture set makes up a 4 frame animation.
The first two lines of the gameshark code 810564DE 0D?? 810564E2 ???? points to the rom address for the first texture in the animation. Beware of signed addition here. If the second line ???? is greater than 0x7FFF add one to the first line's ??.
The second two lines of the gameshark code 810564E6 0D?? 81056512 ???? point to pallet. Again beware signed addition.
In the video, I have replaced the bomb texture with the left side of the textures that tell you what place you are in on the results screen. This video is really just a test. This video is of a ROM hack for the USA/NTSC version of Mario Kart 64 to (mostly) makes CPUs use human items in GP mode. The CPU item probabilities have been modified to use the human probability table and the CPU item select function above has been replaced by a custom function to try to match the CPU item states to the human ones as best as possible. Now after all these years CPUs finally can fire shells in GP mode! I have tested this hack in both emulators and on console, so it should work on an Everdrive 64.
Besides single bananas, stars, ghosts, lightning, fake item boxes and single mushroom boosts, CPUs can now use: -Single green shells -Single red shells -Banana bunches -Triple mushroom boosts
Other changes that have been made: -CPUs draw item probabilities based on their place (1st through 8th) from the same table as a human now instead of their own table. -CPU item spawn timing has been staggered so the CPUs don't all spawn items at once. -Lightning probability for CPUs has been toned down to make the game way less annoying to play.
Some limitations (which I hope to overcome in future versions): -Triple shells have been replaced with single shells -Golden mushroom boosts have been replaced with triple mushroom boosts -Blue shells have been replaced with red shells
Old news (no longer relevant but I will keep it here for historical purposes):
Update 4 (version 2.4): The crash has finally been fixed! Scroll down to download version 2.4 of the patch. Turns out it was a bug in the actual game's code where the game would crash if DK makes a noise shooting a shell. Probably a bug the developers never fixed because they removed CPU shell firing from the game. I turned off the coproccessor command that was causing the crash. This might cause minor sound glitches, so if you notice any please let me know. I will work on a cleaner fix for the next version. Also another update in this version of the patch, I have staggered the times each CPU uses an item to make the game feel more natural, instead of all the CPUs firing items at once.

The FAKE ITEM BOX TORNADO!triclon2019-09-10 | In my attempts to make Mario Kart 64 CPU players shoot triple and blue shells, I managed to inadvertently come up with this whacktackular result. What is going on here? CPU racers are being forced to fire endless streams of red shells with the red shells replaced with fake item boxes (the idea being you can replace the red shell firing code with a blue shell to maybe get the CPUs to shoot blue shells). The fake item boxes spawn on the human player and not the CPUs and collide with each other making a giant fake item box tornado of polygons. CPU racers unlucky enough to drive into the tornado get hit.
Here's the Gameshark codes you need to make this work

This video is of a ROM hack for the USA/NTSC version of Mario Kart 64 to (mostly) makes CPUs use human items in GP mode. The CPU item probabilities have been modified to use the human probability table and the CPU item select function above has been replaced by a custom function to try to match the CPU item states to the human ones as best as possible. Now after all these years CPUs finally can fire shells in GP mode! I have tested this hack in both emulators and on console, so it should work on an Everdrive 64.
Some limitations:
-As far as I know CPUs cannot use triple shells, so triple green and triple red shells have been replaced by single shells -I haven't been able to map out the mushroom boosts so the triple and golden mushroom boosts have been replaced by single mushroom boosts for the CPUs. -As far as I know, CPUs cannot fire blue shells, so the blue shell has been replaced with a red shell. -Normally humans are much more likely to get lightning than CPUs. With CPUs using the human item probability table, the ones near last place get lots of lightning. This can be annoying. A future version of this patch might reduce the lightning probability for CPUs.
This was a massive undertaking in figuring out how the game treats how CPUs use items. The original goal was to get CPUs to fire shells. Thanks to micro500 for answering questions about out how the ASM works and to all the folks who wanted to see the CPUs shoot shells and gave words of encouragement. Working on this has helped me learn a lot about MIPS assembly code and how to hack Nintendo 64 games.
In Mario Kart 64 there is a green thwomp mysteriously locked behind bars in Bowser's Castle. He has been unofficially named Marty and has been the subject to longstanding rumors that he can actually be unlocked as a playable character. Several hoax and April fools joke images and videos have popped up over the years supposedly showing the convoluted things you need to do on the track in Bowser's Castle to unlock Marty as a playable character.
Well now you can finally race as him with this hack! The current version works only in Bowser's Castle for Player 1 but it works for all engine classes and in both Time Trial and VS. mode (so you can play your friends as Marty).
Copy the Gameshark code into your favorite emulator, or if you have the patience you can type it into a real Gameshark. I haven't tested that yet on a real console, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
A few interesting things I noticed when making this hack: -Marty's green color isn't caused by the lighting in his cell. The developers purposely shaded him green instead of blue. -Marty's behavior differs a bit from the other thwomps. He normally keeps his eyes closed but driving up to him makes him laugh at you.It is real! Mario Kart 64 Battle Botstriclon2019-08-05 | Way back in the 90s when I was a kid, I really wanted to play against the CPUs in battle mode but Nintendo never programed them in. Well... better late than never I suppose.
What is this video? In this video I am Player 1 playing as Mario in battle mode against Peach, Toad, and Luigi who are all CPU bots. There are no other human players here, just me.
So what are the bots? The bots are a (kind of long) Gameshark code.
How? The code checks game's random number generator and randomly modifies button and control stick activators in the console's RAM to press the gas (A button), turn left or right with the cstick, or fire items with the Z button. The code basically is taking over the controller and then randomly mashing buttons while holding down A to make the bot move forward. You don't even need a controller plugged into the console for the bot to work. I have opted to give the bots random items since they don't always run into the item boxes.
How smart are the bots? They are dumb. They will drive into walls, go in circles, get stuck in corners, drive off the level (in Donut and Skyscraper), and run into their own banana peels and fake item boxes. They make zero effort to go for item boxes, hunt you down, or run away. They are just doing a random walk to move around (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_walk).
Can you make them smarter? Maybe. This is the first version of my battle bots code. In the interest of finishing it, and keeping the code as short as possible, I have opted for dumb bots.
Can you have an all bot match? Yes you can! If people are interested, I can make a video. It is not as interesting to watch as you would think since the bots are really dumb and spend most of the time wandering around aimlessly into walls as stray bananas and shells slowly pick them off. Perhaps someday 4 bot battle matches can make it into Las Vegas sportsbooks and you can bet on the outcome.
Does the code work in an emulator? Sadly I have not gotten it to work on any emulator I have tested it on. I am pretty sure this has something to do with how the emulator treats the controller input vs. the console, because this code works by modifying the location in the console's RAM that stores what buttons are pressed and the direction of the control stick. If you are able to get it to work in an emulator, please let me know.
How I can I get the battle bots to work on my own console?
I recommend you create 5 separate codes, 1 for "Don’t lose balloons when falling off course" and 4 more for each player. That way you can choose which players are human and which are bots by only turning on the codes for the players you want to be bots. Let me know if you have any questions or run into any issues trying to get it to work.Mario Kart 64 CPUs spam fake item boxes! - Gameshark codestriclon2019-07-29 | Gameshark codes below:

An improved version of my original "Rave Rainbow Road" code (youtu.be/kCgJ-nwSYZ4) but this time, the sky colors blend it much better with the black below the horizon. I use the game's random number generator to change the sky colors in Rainbow Road to random colors.

This was an experiment to test if you can change the sky colors dynamically in Mario Kart 64. I use the game's random number generator to change the sky colors in Rainbow Road to random colors. As you can see, the game only sets the sky color above the horizon. Below the horizon, Rainbow Road is hard coded to black. You can also see that the textures for the flashing neon signs of character faces actually have black backgrounds and are not transparent.

My first attempt at this code glitched out freezing the camera and making most of the CPUs except for peach stuck at the back. This allows the player to unload green shells towards the camera and on CPUs for dramatic effect, hence "Bowser's Firing Squad". I guess a single Bowser doesn't really make a squad but the name sounded cool for the glitch so that's what you get.
Hopefully I can fix this up and make a proper Defense game soon, so stay tuned.
If you want to try the glitched out "Firing Squad" code yourself, here it is:

Each player has 3 HP and dies when their HP = 0. At 2 HP, a character's color will be tinted darker, and at 1 HP a character will start to smoke. If you kill everyone, you win, get a point, and advance to the next track. If you die (or both players die in 2 player GP mode) you lose and must restart the race. I am still working on the VS mode scoring, so stay tuned.

This hoppin' new Gameshark code modifies the gameplay to be like Frogger. Your now green tinted character cannot use the gas and break or else they will spin out. Instead you must push the control stick repeatedly in the direction you want to go and your character will hop like a frog. The traffic in Toad's Turnpike will now squish you instead of make you tumble. Why? Because cars squish frogs.
Note that since pushing the control stick activates the R button, you should navitage the game menus with the directional pad or else you will accidentally select "data" on the main menu. I am working to fix this in the next version of Frog Mode.
