Building the Custom Titanium Hardtail of my Dreams Berm Peak 2022-12-10 | Back in July when I officially became sponsorless, I started thinking about exactly the bike I wanted for the first time in years. I knew I wanted a titanium hardtail, but nobody made the exact geometry I really preferred. The reach was always too long, or the size small had some bend in the seat tube that would prevent my dropper post from being inserted the whole way.That’s when I realized that “zero-compromise” would mean having a custom frame built. So I started my conversation with Sage, who makes built to order titanium frames out of Oregon. Not only did I get the exact geometry that I wanted, but also a custom paint job. I was against painting the titanium at all from the start, but they won me over with a custom Cerakote scheme that covers only the rear of the bike. I also picked out all the parts for this bike. Some companies I had contacts at, and I was able to get a discount or even a free part. But back when I started my orders, many companies were fresh out of stock, and so I needed to pay full retail sideways to get the parts in time. Had I compromised and taken parts that were available, or parts I could get for free, it would have been just that—a compromise. Now that the bike is finished, I’m really wondering how it rides! I took it down a dirt road while lugging around a bunch of cameras to get the finished shots, and then promptly got sick. Building a backyard MTB pumptrack for my kids! Berm Peak 2023-08-17 | I always thought we would build a jungle gym or swingset up behind the garage—that's an area close to the house, and so it's only fair that Mrs. Bike Hacks has a say in what goes up there. Well, suddenly she's okay with a pumptrack for the kids! What I ended up building resembles a pumptrack, but it's really a downhill track, as gravity takes you from the top to the bottom, with a short push back up at the end. We can continue altering and adding to this as time goes on, which is a really exciting prospect.This was a really satisfying build for me, as it's currently being enjoyed every day. I finally got to ride my new custom bike—and I have a lot to say about it! Berm Peak 2022-12-21 | In the last episode we built up my custom titanium hardtail mountain bike, which was made according to an exhaustive list of specifications. At the end of the build I immediately got sick and could not ride, so in this video I actually take the bike out and give my thoughts on it.I worked with Dave from Sage to design this bike. It was a lot of sending measurements back and forth, sending photos, pictures of tape measures, videos, etc. We went through several versions and worked through all the details, like ensuring the front tire would clear the downtube, and ensuring my seatpost would fully insert and end up at the perfect ride heigh when extended to 150mm.It's easy to find a 27.5 bike that fits me, but not a 29er. In the realm of 29ers, the Sage Powerline was already pretty close to what I wanted, since it has a pretty short reach and a nimble geometry for covering ground—I just wanted it to be a little more aggressive, but not TOO aggressive to where it's just a plow. So we ended up with a little longer reach and chainstay than stock, also an increased wheelbase and shorter standover height. LEVELING UP my workshop! - Building a second story in my garage workshop Berm Peak 2022-11-30 | Today we’ll build a mezzanine in my garage workshop. On the top we will build an office, and underneath will be the home of Neckbeard Laboratories, where any "tinker" activities will take place.This is a "residential" mezzanine usually used in loft apartments to gain some extra space. It's a little over 155 square feet in area. I also carefully chose the height to strike a good balance between both levels. Building a Suspension Fork Impact Tester for Science Berm Peak 2022-09-14 | I bought a real cheap air fork that shows some promise—for the Kent Trouvaille of course. In our quest to upgrade this bike with the cheapest most effective parts, we need to step up our testing a bit. This is the reason why I'm going through all this trouble to build an impact tester. Giving this Mom MTB a Parts Bin Overhaul, and damaging it in the process 😬 Berm Peak 2022-09-01 | Liv is Gian’t Women’s line, and this bike is a Liv Hail (it’s a little like a Giant Reign). It arrived with a number of issues, including really rough linkage bearings. I’ve never serviced the linkage on a Giant MTB before, which will be evident by my careless removal of the thru bolt in the center of the rocker link. In the end, I replaced the link, installed all new bearings in the frame, and snagged a whole lot of upgrades from the parts bin. We placed hidden cameras all over the shop, and had the customer walk in with a GoPro on his backpack strap, made to look like it was off by disabling the screens, lights, and beeps. Visiting Berm Park purely for research purposes (I learned some things) Berm Peak 2022-05-19 | On Monday, I spent the entire day at Berm Park. Oddly enough, this is the first time I've done this since grand opening without a thousand people there, or construction taking place. This was also on a day that fellow YouTuber, Jeff Kendall-Weed was visiting, so I got to ride with a friend!Riding the bike park like a normal visitor gave me a lot of interesting insight, like the need for additional signs. I also realized that a lot of people who come to Berm Park are still learning what a bike park actually is, and what it's for. As I said in the video, we're counting on you guys to explain (nicely) what the rules of the bike park are. We have one-way signs there, but I saw an entire youth ministry led by an adult riding backwards up High Roller. People don't always read, and clearly this whole closed loop bike park concept is new to them. But just like you, they're visiting to have fun. Restoring a VERY neglected mystery full squish Berm Peak 2022-02-09 | Today, I don’t even know what we’re restoring. None of the original labels were on this mid 2000’s full suspension bike, but it turned out to be a diamond in the rough. We break this bike down, restore it to its former glory, and sell it to someone who will put it back on the trails.To figure out what bike this is, you need to find one that matches wheelsmfg.com/derailleur-hanger-49.html this derailleur hanger #49The brake levers were dated 2006, and the fork damper was dated 2008This bike looks very similar to the Santa Cruz Heckler, and Superlight. However, the cable routing and rear triangle design are very different upon close inspection.The Diamondback Atroz also looks almost exactly like this bike, however the derailleur hangers don’t match, and the rear triangles have significant design differences.The Cannondale Rush looks very similar as well, and indeed the cable routing matches. However, the Rush uses a different derailleur hanger and has noticeable design differences all around the bike.
