Frankenstein (1910) New Restoration 2020 !!! Stephen Dorian Kutos 2020-10-11 | This is a new restoration of a film I previous restored. The Library of Congress obtained the only surviving print and scanned it in 2K, which is the basis for this restoration. I have done more color correcting and exposure grading then they did. They also used a couple of still frames in places of certain intertitles that were too damaged in the print, I have fixed all of those to restore them to filmed intertitles. And it contains my personal compiled scrore for the film with excerpts from Robert Graettinger's compositions for Stan Kenton's band, including pieces from City of Glass and This Modern World, which are far superior to the dreary organ music others have used. Babe Im Gonna Leave You First Ever Recordings Stephen Dorian Kutos 2020-02-20 | These are the very first ever recordings of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", long before Led Zepplin even existed. The first is by the song's author Anne Bredon, who wrote the songs in the late 50's, and this recording dates from approx. 1959, and is a home recording. The recordings is a little rough, but you can absolutely recognize the song. The second recording is from Janet Smith from approx 1961 when she was attending Oberlin College. She heard Anne play it on a college radio show, and Anne to teach it to her. Janet then developed her own arrangement of the song, and you can clearly hear this is the arrangement of the song that was later made famous by Joan Baez. Janet is the one who taught the song Joan, and from there the song entered repertoire of many folk, pop, and rock artists, being recorded by The Association, obscure British Rn'B band The Plebs, and eventually Led Zepplin and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Maciste In Hell (1926) Full Restoration, Uncut, In English Stephen Dorian Kutos 2019-09-28 | I present to you the Rainwater Renaissance restoration of the legendary 1926 masterpiece of silent Italian cinema, Maciste In Hell, the best in the series of films starring the beloved Italian strong man, Maciste, and inspired in part by none other than Dante's Inferno. This is the uncut original European version running about 97 minutes, restoring almost 33 minutes of footage that were cut by US censors. The film has been completely re-tinted, accurate to it's debut screening. The intertitles have been fully recreated, again accurate to it's original release, and newly translated into English for the very first time. Great care was taken to improve picture quality as much as possible, contrast levels boosted, some damage repaired, and attempts made to sharpen the image. And finally, an entirely new soundtrack has been created for the film. With no original score commissioned for the film during it's production, and the US release being accompanied by dreary stock organ music, the film is now paired with music befitting it's visual splendor. Scenes of Maciste descending into the Inferno to battle devils and indescribable horrors ebb and flow with most appropriate accompaniment from the likes of Liszt's Faust Symphony, Dante Symphony, Mephisto Waltz, and La Lugubre Gondola, and Berlioz's Dreams of a Witch's Sabbath from the Symphonie Fantastique. This restoration is based in part on an earlier restoration attempted in Brazil in the early 1990's. Unfortunately when they made their telecine of the film they didn't frame it properly, so there are one or two instances where this is notable when watching the film, but will not hinder your enjoyment of the film. Until there is a full 4K restoration from the original negative, this is the absolute best version of the film available. Enjoy!

Is is a home demo recording by the song's writer, Billy Roberts. The song has a long and complicated history regarding it's authorship, but this is the absolute first version ever recorded, in 1961/62, as a favor to Billy Roberts friend Barry Friedman. I received a CDR copy of this ree-to-reel tape in the early 2000's from Billy then lawyer/manager. I have edited together some historical footage of prisoners from the 30's and 40's to aid the song visually, as the images seem to fit the tone of the song very well.Here are the rest of the recordings of Billy Roberts from this tape in a video. Frankenstein (1910) Stephen Dorian Kutos 2017-02-26 | My personal restoration of the first film adaptation of "Frankenstein" and what may be the very first horror film. I refer you to Frederick C. Wiebel, Jr.'s book for a complete history of the film's production, loss, and rediscovery, but for some background info to illustrate the restoration, the film was believed lost for many years, until the only known surviving print came into to possession of the strange Alois F. Dettlaff. Dettlaff eventually released copies of the film on VHS and DVD, but marred the image with several watermarks, sloppy title cards, and a horrendous new musical score. All copies of the film now are sourced from these releases. It is unknown where Dettlaff's print is now since his death.In my restoration every attempt was made to erase the appearance of the watermarks. All of the tinting has been redone and is more consistent. The intertitles have all been redone and made accurate to the Edison Studio style of films from the same period. And finally, the music has been redone. When released in 1910 the film was sent with a cue sheet as to suggested musical accompaniments, but I felt that the suggested music didn't suit the film. I have given the film an entirely new score taken from the works of Robert Graettinger compositions for Stan Kenton's band, including pieces from City of Glass and This Modern World, all from the early 1950's, which I feel suit the film stylistically and sonically perfectly.Enjoy!
A Third Film Stephen Dorian Kutos 2017-02-14 | Another film I'm proud of. This is a sequence on 35mm that has been put through a process called stop printing, where each frame is printed several times to slow the action down to a crawl. Then I used lots of dissolves and micro dissolves, some only 3 or 4 frames long, to create a dream-like atmosphere, which I refer to as a visual glissando. This is a fight scene in which the two actors actually inflicted real bodily harm on each other, breaking ribs, knocking teeth out, and more with the cameras catching it all. I was hoping to take something of real, ugly violence and re-contextualize it and try to make it a thing of beauty, almost balletic. Influenced by the work of Peter Whitehead, and Norman Mclaren's "Pas de Deux".P.S. The title is a reference to the fact that this was the third in a line of Structuralist films I have made.

The Shape of Rage Stephen Dorian Kutos 2017-01-31 | This was the first really good film I made. I was experimenting with color reversal film stock, particularly shooting in low light conditions to achieve extreme color saturation, I shot various situations including during one of my favorite pastimes, driving across the bay bridge at dusk. When I got the footage developed I got the incredible saturation I wanted, but I also got something unexpected. Something was wrong with my Bolex 16mm, wherein the film was not stable during exposure, which gave everything this vibratory, dripping quality, especially in highlights. After watching it a few times I feel in love with the look and set about putting the footage to use. I wanted to create a totally subjective experience, a representation of a psychological state; paralyzing rage. The vibrating footage became representational of dizzying anger, and being so mad "you can't see straight". Memory fragments, flashes of the source of anger, blood rushing through the body, music that breaks and pulses with the images, and scenes of attempting to calm down combine to communicate a mindset. Matthew Turcotte makes an appearance at the end.

It's a combination of scratching the emulsion, and painting, drawing, and marking directly on the film. The entire film was made on a small roll of 16mm that was left in my Bolex by the previous owner.
Transportation Hope Stephen Dorian Kutos 2017-01-17 | Here is the first film I made. It was an assignment in film school to create an aural/visual exercise. It had to be shot on one single 100ft roll of 16mm film, it had to be a kind of adaptation from a written source, it had to be set to a completely instrumental song, and it had to be edited entirely in-camera. I used Randall Jarrell's poem "Hope" as my source and the newly rebuilt Bay St. Louis bridge as my subject to illustrate the theme. It is scored to a cut from Kraftwerk's album "Autobahn". The greek intertitles were done out of humor. The film's offical title is "Transportation.
