Humanity Rising Day 1006: Dementia: the dissolution of the self and extraordinary experiences Ubiquity University 2024-10-10 | What is dementia – and how does it emerge? Bettina Wichers our expert guest says: "Is it a biomedical process or the embodiment of a long-term process of increasing self-dissolution, as I understand it. The older we get, the more often we can fall into prolonged states of confusion or disorientation, the cause of which does not have to be primarily physical, but can result from an increasing disorientation in our own being. In addition to the approaching end of life, triggers can be unprocessed challenging life experiences, unresolved shadow issues, but also repressed extraordinary consciousness experiences that cause a temporary or permanent dissolution of previous ideas about the self and the world. This self-dissolution, even if experienced only for moments, can, as is known from numerous reports of spiritually transformative experiences, have long-term, incredibly confusing and frightening consequences. However, such experiences have not yet been considered in the context of dementia. I hypothesise that advanced dementia may be an increasing embodiment of unconscious or unacknowledged and unintegrated self-dissolution, and that the physical symptoms attributed to dementia may, from this perspective, be considered a consequence rather than a cause of the phenomenon we call dementia. From this perspective, aging represents a crossroads between a pre-personal development, in which confusion and disorientation about one's own existence are increasingly shifted inwards and ultimately lead to an embodiment of disorientation – dementia – and a transpersonal development in which a temporary, age-related confusion about one's own existence and the world itself can be steered in a transpersonal direction, in an increasing self-transcendence up to a conscious self-dissolution. Humanity Rising Day 972: Cracking the Aging Code Ubiquity University 2024-07-27 | Just in the last decade, there is a flood of biotech money flowing into the science of aging. There have been many successful experiments extending lives of lab animals, and investors are convinced at last that it is feasible to slow aging in humans. But there are two big problems. First, all this money steers research toward Intellectual Property, and the best interventions we have are not patentable. Research priorities are skewed toward making money rather than extending life. Second, there are basic misunderstandings about the cause of aging. There are 5 stories floating around about what aging is, and they are all obviously wrong. Most of the research is based on repairing damage that happens at the cellular level, but aging is controlled at a system-wide level. The most spectacular success in rejuvenating old rats is unknown by most mainstream researchers in aging. The basic research needed to translate this technique to humans is not being pursued as vigorously as it deserves. Josh Mitteldorf earned a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Pennsylvania, and switched mid-career into the biology of aging. In his writing, he blends science, spirituality, and a profound sense of social responsibility. He has written a popular book and an academic book on the biology of aging. Humanity Rising Day 970: Our New Narrative from a Systemic Way of Knowing Ubiquity University 2024-07-25 | In our modern world, modalities like intuition, wisdom beyond rationality, and non-ordinary ways of knowing tend to be trained out of us, replaced by a hyper focus on rationality and constraining our “valid” knowing to the so-called objective world. In the 21st century, as the second tier of Spiral Dynamics becomes more prevalent, a wide variety of techniques and methods have been emerging, allowing us to know the world in new, emergent ways. Systemic constellations are one such modality, focusing as they do on creating a living map of a system (family, team, organization, community) that reveals the underlying (sometimes hidden) dynamics of the focal system. In this talk, we will review the three fundamental principles that create harmony in human systems, then briefly identify three application areas: individual coaching, group process, and solo introspection, all using a constellation view. Finally, we will take an in-depth look at a real world constellation process that Michael used as a solo introspection process. Michael Spayd is about transformation. Drawn to cutting edge 'technologies' for coaching organizations, leaders and teams, he has been an organizational change coach and consultant for more than 25 years, working in Fortune 1000 to small businesses. He has specialized in large-scale Agile transformations since 2001. Training in Systemic Constellations and Systemic Management has fundamentally changed his view of the world and his work.
