In today's episode, we're exploring idiomatic expressions unique to Brazilian Portuguese. We've challenged some European Portuguese speakers to decipher their hidden meanings. But there's a twist: participants buzz in to set the answering order, and no two answers can be the same. Each participant needs to bring a fresh interpretation to the table.
How well do you think they did? And how about you? Were you familiar with any of these idioms? Watch, compare, and share your thoughts in the comments. If you enjoy our linguistic explorations, a like and a subscribe would be greatly appreciated!

Mutual intelligibility is the ability of speakers of different languages to understand each other without prior knowledge or special effort. In the case of Romance languages, mutual intelligibility exists to varying degrees due to their shared origin in Vulgar Latin and the influence of the Roman Empire.
The Romance languages include Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, and many more smaller regional languages. While these languages have evolved over time and developed distinct features, they still share many similarities in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, which allow speakers to understand each other to some extent. Let us know about your experience with Romance Languages.

Croatian, with its rich history and distinct characteristics, serves as the focal point of this linguistic journey. Through a series of language challenges, we're on a mission to uncover the extent to which speakers of Polish, Ukrainian and Bulgarian languages can understand Croatian, and vice versa. The magic of mutual intelligibility lies in its ability to bridge language gaps and foster cross-cultural connections.
Croatian, an official language of Croatia and one of the standard varieties of Serbo-Croatian, holds a significant place in the Slavic language family. Rooted in the Indo-European language group, Croatian is a South Slavic language with distinct phonological, grammatical, and lexical features. It utilizes the Latin script, a result of historical influences from the Roman Empire. Throughout its evolution, Croatian has been shaped by a mix of linguistic influences, including Latin, Old Church Slavonic, and various neighboring languages.
Despite its shared linguistic roots with other South Slavic languages, such as Serbian and Bosnian, Croatian retains its individuality through specific vocabulary choices, pronunciation patterns, and cultural references. However, due to their mutual intelligibility, speakers of these languages can often understand each other without formal training.
Let's see to what extent Polish, Ukrainian and Bulgarian speakers can understand the Croatian language.

Latvian and Lithuanian are two remarkable Baltic languages with deep historical roots and unique linguistic features. Latvian is the official language of Latvia, spoken by the majority of the population, while Lithuanian holds the distinction of being one of the oldest Indo-European languages still in use today. Both languages have retained archaic elements from their ancient origins, making them fascinating subjects of linguistic study.
Mutual intelligibility refers to the ability of speakers of closely related languages to understand each other to varying degrees without prior knowledge or extensive exposure.
Although Latvian and Lithuanian share some similarities due to their shared ancestry, they are separate languages with their own distinct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. While speakers of one language may recognize certain words in the other, the mutual intelligibility between them is limited, hindering effortless communication.
Despite their linguistic differences, Latvian and Lithuanian foster a sense of cultural solidarity in the Baltic region, showcasing the diversity and richness of language within the European continent.

Mutual intelligibility is the ability of speakers of different languages to understand each other without prior knowledge or special effort. In the case of Romance languages, mutual intelligibility exists to varying degrees due to their shared origin in Vulgar Latin and the influence of the Roman Empire.
Catalan is a Romance language spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, and the eastern part of Aragon in Spain, as well as in the Roussillon region of France and the city of Alghero in Sardinia, Italy. It is one of the official languages of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, and is also recognized as a co-official language in Valencia and the eastern part of Aragon.
🤗 Big thanks to Miriam from Catalonia!

Afrikaans is a West Germanic language, and it is one of the official languages of South Africa. It is believed to be mutually intelligible with other Germanic languages, such as Dutch and Flemish. Due to its origins in Dutch, Afrikaans has similarities in vocabulary and grammar with these languages. However, Afrikaans has also developed its own unique features over time, such as simplified grammar and a distinctive pronunciation. Can speakers of Dutch and Afrikaans understand each other despite these differences? Do let us know in the comments about your own experience with Afrikaans.
Afrikaans is a West Germanic language primarily spoken in South Africa but it's also spoken in Namibia, with smaller communities of speakers in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and other neighboring countries. It originated from the Dutch dialects spoken by the Dutch settlers who arrived in southern Africa in the 17th century. Over time, the language evolved and incorporated words and influences from other European languages, such as Portuguese, English, and German, as well as African languages like Khoisan and Bantu.
The Germanic language family is a branch of the larger Indo-European language family, and it includes languages spoken primarily in Northern, Western, and Central Europe. The Germanic languages are traditionally classified into three main groups: West Germanic, North Germanic, and East Germanic. However, the East Germanic languages, which included Gothic, are now extinct.
