Summer 2018, I (Oskar) showed Henry the @/22895739.html, one of my favorite slide-piece puzzles. Boomdas is has nine squares, held together by a dovetail connection. The object is to slide the squares, which reshapes the puzzle, and make it into a square with the numbers in the correct order. Cheating is easy with Boomdas, as one can just take it apart and reassemble. Henry and I worked out the logic when two squares should, or should not be able to slide. The object of the puzzle is to place the domino pieces such that they make numbers: 0123456789. Other challenges are +-*/:|^║=?, white and black. The puzzle is quite confusing to solve, if you don't know what you are doing. When solving systematically, one would first need to map out the magnets embedded in the board and in the seven pieces. With that knowledge, one can easily solve each challenge on paper, and then confirm with the magnetic puzzle.The puzzle was designed by using Excel. 15 magnets are placed in the board randomly, and it counted the number of black-white (and white-black) spheres for each of the challenges. If all those numbers are equal, then the puzzle can at least be solved with monominoes. If not, then the loop is repeated. Excel found a solution quickly. Surprisingly, that solution did not only allow the ten canonical challenges 0123456789, but over ten additional challenges. So the magnet placement on the board is quite "universal". Next, I combined the 15 monominoes into 6 dominoes (two of each of the three types 00, 01, 11) and one triomino (the "V" triomino, 110). That is, from "pentomino" to "pentomiyes".A whopping 55 magnets were embedded in the board during 3D-printing, with specific up-down (north-south) orientations. Another 55 magnets were glued into the black-white marbles. These 55 magnetic marbles were glued into 11 white domino pieces. The puzzle was designed by asking Burrtools for two random 5x11 pentomino designs. Next I used Excel to keep administrative track of which square moves where, when going from NO to YES. By rotating and flipping some of the symmetric pieces, I found a consistent magnet placement. Note that the puzzle has a parity challenge. The pieces have little black-and-white balls with magnets. The board also has magnets, which orients any magnetic ball that is placed on top. The goal is to make a black 5x3 digit "0", with all the other balls white. The puzzle is pleasant to play, as the magnets keep the pieces in place on the board. It is also quite satisfying, and confusing, to see the color changes when sliding the puzzle over the board.According to a Burrtools analysis, there are 111 different ways to place the seven pieces in a 5x5 grid. This number should be multiplied by 16 because of asymmetry of the board: 4x rotations, 2x front-back, 2x mirror image. So the puzzle may be much harder than it looks like.A meta-challenge for this puzzle is to design the magnet placement in the pieces and the board such that there are multiple nice pattern challenges, not just the present "0". There are theoretically 2^50/16-or-so different possible placements of the magnets, too many to reasonable analyse with a computer. Also, it can be reasoned that even having two specific challenges (e.g. "0" and "1") may be impossible with those 50 magnets. I.e. instead of colors to have N,W,E,S". This is the result. When the blue arrow is turned, the black circle moves North-East-South-West. The rotation speed of the black gear is three times the turning speed of the blue arrow. The black circle moves along a cycloid path, briefly pausing at each of the four wind directions. Based on the motion of the black gear, the red and green gears at the front were "rolled off". Next, the gears at the back were designed to match the required rotation accelerations and decelerations of those red and green front gears. When I learned about PRBS at my university, I designed a mechanism for it on 10 January 1987. The mechanism was as simple as the algorithm to generate a PRBS. It uses a shift register, where a new bit is the exclusive OR (XOR) of two earlier bits. I implemented this mechanism 37 years later, where the shift register is a set of seven "bits" on a rotating disk. At one point, a bit flips when its neighbour is "0", whereas it stays the same when the neighbour is "1". The flipping is pushed by gears at the bottom of a bit. The flipping is blocked when the neighbour is in its "1" state. Then the magnets decouple the rotation of the gear from the bit. Each challenge places some of the gears onto the 3x3 grid in a random orientation. The object of the puzzle is to rotate the gears such that the arrows all point in the same direction. The gears have missing teeth, which allows you to skip teeth at some places. The challenge is to find out where to skip teeth, and in which direction. There are two versions of the Nobbz puzzle. The first version uses the same pointy gears as Screw Gears ( youtube.com/watch?v=pD7pk4LLfp8 ). This is the harder version, as the gap also blocks gear rotation, which limits the skipping of teeth. The object is to place the two oddly-shaped gears over the two seven-pointed-star shafts such that they rotate freely. When gears are placed incorrectly, they won't fit, or the rotation will block. Hidden inside the frame is an identical set of gears that control the rotation of the shaft. The system will turn only when the placed gears match the hidden ones. When one naively tries tries all possible combinations, then this may take up to 7x7x8=392 attempts. However, when you realise that the placement of one gear determines the other, then only 7x4=28 attempts remain. One can reduce this number even further, when checking at which orientation one shaft turns the fastest, and what this means for the orientation of the gears. Whereas the latter features a gear with "half-fold symmetry", this gear system also features a gear with "third-fold symmetry". That gear needs to complete three full turns (1080 degrees) for the gear system to get back to its starting position. So the gear system as a whole has a half:third gearing ratio at average. It was quite a challenge to develop this gear system, with six virtual prototypes and two 3D-printed ones. The biggest problem was to prevent the gears from bumping into each other. The question was whether it would be possible to design a gearing system with two identical half-fold gears, where the system returns to its starting state after 720 degrees of rotation, instead of the usual 360 degrees. The answer to the question is "no", as illustrated by the prototype. Even though the gears can rotate by more than 620 degrees, by far exceeding the 360-degrees mark, 720 degrees is not possible. The problem is that there will always be a "cross-over point", where there is ambiguity in which "track" the gear set is, and hence teeth bump into each other.The second prototype follows the adage "fake it, if you can't make it". The yellow stand contains a hidden gearbox that simulates the desired 720-degrees behaviour. Einstein Tiling Puzzle is based on the famous aperiodic tiling pattern, discovered by David Smith and mathematically proven by Joseph Samuel Myers, Craig S. Kaplan, and Chaim Goodman-Strauss. As described by the authors, the "Einstein's Hat" tiling is one tiling from a continuum, starting from an arrow tiling. My idea was to turn this into a tiling puzzle by having 3D pieces that layer-by-layer morph from arrow to hat. Craig Kaplan provided me with the 2D curves to CAD this morphing. Kagen developed a series of (award-winning) secret opening boxes that require to form a specific mesmerizing maze-like pattern. In this new puzzle, Kagen's pattern is applied to small rings along a tall cylinder. The object is again to make a set of symmetrical patterns. This is challenging, because each ring has a little knob at the inside, which slides into notches in the cylinder. Each rings fit on multiple places around the cylinder, but not everywhere. The notches pattern was designed such that there is only a single solution for each of the seven challenges. The puzzle is a bit confusing, but not too hard to solve. The ball runs from the top center all the way down, over the castle wall, into the back gate and out through the front gate. One can roll a 7-millimeter steel ball inside the track, or a 10-millimeter steel ball over de edges of the track. This big version took over 78 hours (more than 3 days) to print. It used 234 meter (700 gram) of filament. I used rainbow filament for the castle, and tri-color co-extruded filament for the bottom layer. The castle is 178x199x212 millimeter.Notice the question-mark-shaped start of the track at the center. The object is to drink from the mug. However, the mug has holes at its sides, such that tilting the mug results in spilling your drink. The solution is in the small holes at the rim. One of them acts as a straw to drink from, sucking the liquid out. Two other holes need to be kept closed, on at the bottom, one in the handle, so you don't suck in air. When you stop drinking, then there is another surprise. Due to the siphon effect, liquid will keep spilling from bottom hole that you kept closed for air. To stop the spilling, you need to blow air in the opposite direction and break the siphon effect. Cliff Hanger is a true one-piece puzzle. The object of the puzzle is to hang it over a sharp edge of a table, such that it keeps hanging. A heavy piece of steel inside the puzzle shifts it center of gravity. Because of that weight, there is only a single solution. Original prototypes of this puzzle were made in cardboard and veneer. This 3D-printed version was made in birch filament.The weight for this puzzle is a 2.54-mm diameter 80-mm length steel rod, weighting 313 gram. The two birch parts plus alignments screws weight together 235 gram. Solving the puzzle is like solving a labyrinth, moving from turn to turn. Surprisingly, this "maze" has no loop or dead ends, it is 100% unicursal. Nevertheless, people get confused at some point and start going in the opposite direction, ending up at the start. Oskar Key was originally designed in 1987, based on an idea from 1984. This two-layer puzzle key was mass-produced in metal by the Japanese Hanayama toy company. It was the very first licensed design by Hanayama. Production has stopped a long time ago, and vintage samples are occasionally sold at Ebay for 1000 USD. Several people asked me for a 3D-printable sample, so here it is. To make the puzzle even more challenging, I added a third key in the middle.
