Over a series of 10 videos I introduce tips & techniques to help you talk with the public about anything from the world of science, technology, engineering and maths. The course has a focus on helping practising scientists communicate their work with non-experts, but I’ve written it to also be useful to anyone interested in science communication.
As this course is an Introduction to Science Communication do subscribe to my channel for future deeper dives and more scicomm content: http://www.youtube.com/gregfoot?sub_confirmation=1 (and click the bell to make sure you get notified of any new videos)

About the show: Everest Lab is an interactive, demo-packed live science show that explores the science of high-altitude survival, and tells the story of a team of doctors and children on a scientific adventure to uncover cutting-edge medical treatments and save lives back home.
Written by Greg Foot and Nick Insley (Medical/Physiological Presenter and keen mountaineer), this show introduces ‘Xtreme Everest 2’ – a group of intensive care doctors, nurses, and scientists who have set up the highest lab in the world; 5,364m above sea level, at Everest Base Camp.
It’s an inhospitable place to live, let alone do cutting-edge medical research. But they won’t be alone. They’re going to be joined by adults, sherpas and children – volunteers willing to push their bodies to the limits for science.
By studying how healthy bodies cope with the hypoxic conditions at altitude, the Xtreme Everest 2 team hopes to develop new treatments for their critically ill patients back home.
The show not only unpicks the cutting-edge research being done by Xtreme Everest 2 but also explores the science of high altitude survival, uncovers the effect of altitude on your physiology, explores the genetics of fitness. It’s interactive, energetic and packed full of demos.
The show plays in schools and at festivals in the UK and abroad. WE'RE PROFESSIONALS. (Well, at least one of us is a professional...)
The THUNDER is covering up a little swear... Naughty Mike
Had a fun hour in the workshop with Mike playing with ways to explode out the eyes & nose to make an Instant Pumpkin. As you do.
We'd seen the carbide version done before loads of times so we were trying other ideas. Hydrogen worked really nicely (speed through to timecode 01:01 on last weekend's Sunday Brunch to see me doing that one live on Channel4- http://t.co/vJ39aYKo2t )
But then we thought, hey let's create our own hydrogen inside the pumpkin. Mike grabs a (reasonably big) lump of potassium, adds it to the water inside the pumpkin, and the Metal + Water reaction produces a Metal Hydroxide (KOH) & Hydrogen Gas. The gas self-ignites (it's trapped inside the pumpkin and the potassium reaction is still producing heat and a flame). The rapidly expanding ignited gas increases the pressure inside and the pre-cut eyes etc fly out. As does the lid.
Just wait until you see our explosive Christmas video coming soon (shooting it in a few weeks)!
