A change of motive power to a more powerful Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. When regular services were in operation on the G&Q this type of loco was used on the steeper ‘mountain’ sections of the railway, the smaller 2-6-0 Baldwins were used on the flatter section from Duran. As the locos pass, a low frequency rumble is frequently heard, this is caused by the flame of the oil burner. A characteristic sound that was once common on the narrow-gauge sugar cane lines in Cuba, now sadly never to be heard there again. After the summit at Urbina the train continues on to Quito with an Alstom diesel in charge but not without more derailments.
