Here it is, my first video of 2023! It probably could have been the last of 2022 considering I only worked on it in 2023 for a couple hours, but I feel like this song is the perfect fit for a fresh start.
I decided to do a cover of this song when I found out the Pixel Mixers' contest theme for December is time travel games, and since Chrono Trigger is one of my favourite games/soundtracks ever, it was the perfect opportunity to finally do another song from it!
For the first time in a long while, this cover doesn't have any solos in it! Although I like adding them to my covers, I felt this one turned out better without one. As far as arranging, I knew right off the bat I wanted to try doing some metric modulation to change the meter from 6/8 to 4/4 in a triplet feel, and I'm glad I did because I think it works surprisingly well for this song! I also threw in one of my other favourite things to add to a cover which is an either polyrhythmic, or otherwise pattern-based riff. In the second half, I had the bass/rhythm guitars and drums keep changing which part of the bar the group of three notes lands on throughout the whole section, and then for the next, having two groups of three notes and doing the same thing. I feel like that still doesn't explain exactly what's going on, but it's hopefully good enough to know what I'm talking about if you've listened to it already haha. Just in case you're also a music theory nerd and wanted some tidbits
I didn't record any video performance for this one, so unfortunately all I have for you is a crappy visualizer for the audio I found online and a background with text this time :P I was dealing with moving and holidays this whole past month, so I never had time to set up my lights and camera and all that. Since I wanted to enter this in the contest and make the deadline, I decided just not recording video was a necessary sacrifice.

Hey yall, I got another long arrangement for you! This was for David Wise month over at Dwelling of Duels this November. No video performance this time; I felt like because of the length and the fairly long sections with not much going on, a visualizer was best for this one.
Im really proud of this one, not just because of how good I feel I did, but because it also represents another shift in my usual sound. The arrangement is fairly similar to other longer tracks Ive done, with starting pretty low-key, developing into a bigger-ish section, dropping back down, coming back in for the heaviest section, and then dropping off again at the end to send it off. But I did a lot to customize my guitar/bass tones and especially the drum sound this time around to better suit what I had in mind for the track, rather than just going with my usual presets and only tweaking them slightly. The drum part I also wrote pretty differently, going for a much less metally, double-kicky kind of approach and going for more of a heavy post-rock kind of sound. With listening to a lot more music this year thats different from what I used to for a long time, I wanted to incorporate some of that into my music more, and while that showed up a bit in my recent covers, this one shows it a lot more.
I also did a lot of work on production during the arranging phase this time around rather than saving for right before mixing, and I think it really affected the vibe of the track and how I recorded more parts later. I did things like using water sounds in the intro, middle and end (referencing the water sounds in the original of course! :D ), utilizing the cutoff/resonance filters on my synth sound, among other parameters, and doing a weird unintelligible whispered thing in the middle. Dont ask me how I thought of that, it just came to me and decided its what the part needed lol.
With all that to say, I hope you enjoy this one! I think its best enjoyed on headphones because of the extremes in dynamics. Btw, I left some intentional Deftones and Big Wreck references in the music, let me know if/when you catch them! ;P

Ive been planning on doing this one for months! Im glad I finally got a chance to do it, and I also got my friends DisposedHeroVGM and Sumask to lend their talents for it, so special thanks to them for doing some excellent shredding on this one!
Ive had the idea for how I wanted to arrange this cover for a few months, so that part went by pretty quickly. The main part I knew I wanted to do for sure is the long ending part, that is really just the riff from the last section of the original song, but slowed down and transposed down from B minor to F# minor. I based that whole section on the end of a couple Dream Theater songs (namely The Dark Eternal Night and S2N) that have this sludgy riff going by with a keyboard solo on top. This one ended up being some keyboard and guitar, but I think I still pulled off that kind of vibe pretty well (with Sumasks help of course!)
This is the second video Ive done with my green screen, and Im still not entirely sure about whether I like it or not. Im definitely not super good at using it properly yet; theres some unavoidable artifacts in the video (mostly just small outlines and the very edges of my instruments disappearing a tiny bit), but its still very watchable. I also tried using my webcam for recording instead of my phone, although Ill probably go back to my phone because the quality is a bit better, and Ill probably have better results with the green screen now that I know how to film it better than the first time. Trying to edit myself into the rooms of my contributors who dont use green screens was also an interesting and fun challenge!
This is also the first video I made using my new computer! Its been amazing so far, with very few of the hiccups, lag, and general slowness of my previous laptop. I was actually able to watch the preview of my video in the video editor!
