Anyone that's played Gran Turismo knows about it's license tests. And anyone that's tried out the license tests knows how brutal some of them can be just to get bronze & pass them, especially in the earlier games, even more so if you're going for gold. Some of the license tests in the first Gran Turismo were particularly a pain in the ass for many, perhaps too many, it was no joke. So in GT2 there's somewhat of a hidden fourth category as far as your ranking in each license test goes. It's only in this game and has never been seen again since. There's the obvious gold, silver, and bronze, and then there's the secret kids prize. Like getting any other medal, the kids prize is essentially a pass. But the conditions for it are very specific, and are different for each license test. You have to complete a test with a time worse than the bronze target time, failing the test. But it can't be drastically worse than the bronze time either, you have to come up just a bit short. And you have to do this a certain number of times before you're finally given the kids prize and get your pass. The one I did for instance, B-1. You have to run a time worse than the 39.8 second bronze target time, but no worse than 41 seconds, and you have to do this 10 times. After the 10th attempt instead of another fail, you'll finally get the kids prize instead.
It's like the game just feels bad for you & finally takes pity on you and lets you move on. This is probably a good thing if you're actually a kid. But for teens and adults, this would probably be more of an insult than a gift. Most people don't know about the kids prize as each license test only shows what times you need to beat for gold, silver, or bronze. And most people are skilled enough to atleast get a bronze after a few attempts. So anyone that's gotten the kids prize on a license test likely got it by accident. If you have both Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2, you can convert some of your save data over to GT2 and you'll automatically earn the first 2 licenses with each test showing the kids prize symbol over them. There's a guide that shows what time you have to get under without getting a bronze medal, and how many times you have to do it for the kids prize on each test. I’d leave a link to it if I could actually find it but I can’t. Be warned though, some of them require as many as 30 attempts to finally get. It's easier for most people to just pass the test normally than to get the kids prize.
