When he was just 10 years old, Martin Freeman’s father died of a heart attack. As a child, the actor tried to show people that he was a “brave little four-foot thunderball”. “I’ve only realised how tough it is as I’ve got older,” he says at the start of his episode of Who Do You Think You Are? The early loss of his father had another effect: Martin knows “embarrassingly little” about his dad’s side of the family.
To fill in the gaps, Martin begins by researching the life of his grandfather, Leonard. When the Second World War began, Leonard headed to France as part of the ill-fated British Expeditionary Force. It was a chaotic time and military records show that Leonard, a medic, was killed a couple of days before the evacuation from Dunkirk began.
At the Imperial War Museum, Martin sees the war diary of the 150th Field Ambulance, Leonard’s unit. It says that two men died as the result of a Luftwaffe attack on 24 May 1940, but gives no names. Martin next heads for Wenlock Barracks in Hull. Here, he at last gets confirmation that Leonard died in an air raid. He also sees a memorial to his grandfather.
Going back a generation, Martin also wants to know more about his great grandfather, Richard William Freeman, who was born in 1853. The 1871 census records deliver a surprise: Richard was blind and is listed as living in a special school in Hampstead. The school, now run by the Royal London Society for the Blind, has moved to Kent, but its archives are intact. Martin learns that, at a time when education reformers were recognising that blind people could lead independent lives, Richard was trained as a musician.
By the 1880s, Richard was living in Worthing, Sussex. He was organist at St Andrew’s Church, West Tarring and lived in a generously proportioned house. Despite his blindness, Richard had joined the middle classes. He was married and had a large family.
In 1891, Richard’s first wife, Fanny, died. While Richard remarried, his life was starting to unravel. An 1894 entry in the parish magazine reads: “The circumstances under which the post of organist at Tarring became vacant are well known to our readers.” However, there’s little hint as to exactly what scandal might have occurred. The 1901 census shows Richard’s family scattered. There’s no death certificate for Richard’s second wife, Emily.
By the time of the 1901 census, Richard had begun to build a new life for himself, as a music teacher in Hull. He was married to Aida, Leonard’s mother. In Humberside, Martin meets one of Aida’s grandchildren and sees a picture of her. She too was blind. Martin also learns that the couple, while they had a large family, lost six children.
Via visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Royal Society of Medicine, Martin realises that Aida probably had syphilis. There are two main clues. Firstly, her brother died of the disease. Secondly, there’s a distinctive pattern to the loss of her children, which suggests she probably contracted the disease a second time, from Richard.
We shouldn’t be too surprised by this, says Dr Peter Greenhouse, an expert in sexual health. A century ago, 10 per cent of the population had syphilis, so a huge percentage of people tracing their family tree can expect to encounter the disease.
But despite the tragedies that beset her, Aida raised a family, lived to her 90s and married again – twice. And the lesson of Aida’s eventful life? “You kind of wonder how many extraordinary characters everyone has got in their family,” concludes Martin, “that we’re all made up of these extraordinary people.”

Ricky Tomlinson is well known for playing the archetypal Scouser and it turns out that his Liverpool roots run deep. Ricky discovers that he comes from generations of carters, who transported goods on Liverpool's docks when the city was the British Empire's busiest port.

The actor Ricky Tomlinson has one simple question as he sets out to trace his father’s family: “Who were the Tomlinsons?” It’s a question rooted in regrets over not asking his dad – Albert, who was just 55 when he died – about the family’s story.
The answer to the question involves a journey through Liverpool’s 19th-century history. Ricky’s first information arrives via a meeting with his brother, Albert, who has a copy of their grandfather’s death certificate. This reveals that Richard Tomlinson was born c1886. Armed with this clue, Ricky is able to trace his family back to his 3x great-grandfather, Richard Tomlinson.
The men of Ricky’s family worked as carters. This means they took charge of the horses and carts that were vital to transporting goods around Liverpool at a time when the city was a bustling port. As a former plasterer and a union organiser, Ricky is delighted to be related to “grafters” instead of the great and good: “I’d rather be descended from a carter, kid, than from royalty,” he jokes.

Fiona Bruce's great-grandfather, Frederick Crouch, died during World War One in mysterious circumstances. The family story is that Frederick failed to duck down when shells began falling nearby, despite the fact everyone else around him dived for cover. But a letter written by Frederick's widow to her son's school soon after the war reveals the sad truth behind the story.
Another family story about Frederick is that he joined the army to escape his parents. Hoping to understand the reasons, Fiona investigates the life of Frederick's father, a seemingly respectable Victorian photographer. It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems with William Crouch, a larger-than-life rogue and star of a celebrated court case.

Martin Freeman's father died when he was just 10 years old. His parents had divorced some years before and Martin knows virtually nothing about the paternal side of his family history. Now he wants to fill in the blanks.
Starting with his grandfather, Leonard Freeman, Martin wants to find out if there is any truth in the family story that he was shot while making a cup of tea at Dunkirk. Further back, Martin also investigates his great grandparents, Richard and Ada. Unable to find a marriage certificate for them, Martin enlists the help of a genealogist. He's astonished by the information she uncovers about his great grandfather.
Martin also discovers that six of Richard and Ada's twelve children died. Convinced that their deaths can't be explained away by infant mortality rates at the time, Martin visits a paediatric consultant to get his take on the children's death certificates. As the story takes a turn Martin could never have imagined, he discovers a dark and hidden chapter of social history.

Ruby Wax's parents fled Vienna for America in 1938. 'They took the war with them and brought it to our kitchen,' says the comedian and mental-health campaigner at the start of this remarkable episode. They raised their only daughter in a dramatically dysfunctional household - Ruby's father was volatile and her mother 'hysterical... screaming in the street.' Ruby wonders if her own mental illness had its origins in her upbringing and the trauma her parents went through, or whether it is in her family's genes.

Actor, comedian and mental health campaigner Ruby Wax traced the tragic roots of her family's history of mental illness in the Holocaust
In the 1990s, comedian and actor Ruby Wax found a new role. Following a diagnosis of depression, she trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness, and has since worked tirelessly to promote better understanding of mental health issues.
“I think I have lived most of my life in a high anxiety state and so I want to know where that came from,” she says. “And I keep blaming my parents. It would be interesting to know who they’re blaming.”
It’s a story centred on Austria because, although Ruby was raised in Chicago, her parents, Edmund Wachs and Berta Goldmann, were Jewish émigrés who fled the Nazis before the start of the Second World War. “They took the war with them and brought it to our table,” says Ruby.
It’s a remark that reflects a dysfunctional childhood. Her mother had a condition dubbed “hysteria”, while her father was volatile – “a ‘torturer’” in Ruby’s mother’s estimation.
Neither talked much about the past, but Berta left a suitcase full of photographs, documents and letters that, with limited German, Ruby is unable to read. These mementoes prove crucial to Ruby reaching a new understanding of her parents and her wider family.

The Texan supermodel Jerry Hall first found fame soon after moving to Paris as a teenager. But where did Mick Jagger’s partner for more than 20 years get her “pioneer spirit”, her sense of adventure? “I suppose it’s in the genes,” she says at the start of her episode of Who Do You Think You Are? “We’ll find out.” The first forebear Jerry goes searching for is a paternal great grandfather, James Hall, but she doesn’t initially find traces of him in the New World. Rather, Jerry heads for Oldham in Lancashire, where she learns James was a child labourer, who worked in a cotton mill as a ‘piecer’, responsible for repairing yarn breakages even as the mill’s machines kept running. James was promoted to become a supervisor, but in 1881, as he turned 30, his life changed forever when he shipped out for Texas. He was drawn by the prospect of well-paid work constructing the railways and the opportunity to acquire land. Initially, he left his family, a wife and two children, in the UK, and Jerry fears he was “an adventurous cad” who did “a runner”. James’s family joined him in 1882, only for his wife, Martha, to die of kidney disease in 1883. It’s unclear what happened to James’s baby son, but it seems a family friend adopted his daughter, Clara.

Sara has a photograph of Cyril as a two-year-old and tells Rupert that the family believe he was brought up by two aunts in Hammersmith. Rupert wants to find out more about Cyril's life and what he was doing in Nigeria. Rupert tracks down records which chart Cyril's career in the Service and discovers just how important a role he held in Nigeria. But what about Cyril's childhood? Rupert decides to search the online census records and unearths some very unexpected information. This is the start of a rollercoaster investigation into fathers and sons which Rupert describes as like an Ealing comedy, with its twists, turns and surprise relatives popping up. Rupert reflects on the ripple effects of broken relationships across the generations. On social mobility, both up and down, broken rules, abandonment, rebellion, convention and secrecy.
