MA-12 portable 100W HF GP antenna: how to get it work better on 30m band ! LY2H Ham Radio Van 2025-05-10 | MA-12 100W portable HF vertical antenna is a very good antenna, when we need a compromise between rapid deployment functionality and HF radiation efficiency. It is designed to work with no tuner on 40m to 6m bands. Although on 30m the supplied 40m loading coil is too big an inductance and takes to shortening down the antenna by half to achieve the resonance on 30m. This is not efficient solution. In this video, I present my own solution with a separate coil. Z-match Tuner modded: a well-tuned doublet gave me New Zealand in the log with 10W IC-705! DUP50 for IC-705 review test and duplexer vs diplexer discussion. Multi-band, Low-loss, works without ATU. ZS6BKW: is it my new POTA antenna?! LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-10-21 | This is ZS6BKW antenna. Ham Radio antennas for HF portable use need to be unique , in a way: easy deployment, high efficiency, simple construction, less various baluns and transformers and coax cables as possible. There is not so many such antennas. ZS6BKW is one of those. It’s a cousin of well known G5RV antenna but with much better specs, as it’s design based on computer-modeled best lengths of 450 Ohm windows-line feeder and the dipole arms. The idea of using transmission line as an impedance transformer was anticipated by Louis Varney, G5RV back in 1950’s, and then developed with much more precise computer calculations by Brian Austin , G0GSF, in some 1980’s and was named ZS6BKW Antenna, as such was a callsign of B. Austin at that time. The ZS6BKW project is kept on developing constantly by other hams. My version is based on an article in the www.dl9nbj.de blog and is adopted for the 450 Ohm window-line use. My field test shows that this antenna can (in my particular location and configuration!) work good or satisfactory without the tuner on 40,20,17 and 12m bands, and with the ATU it can tune all the bands from 80-10m with no problems. The best results were achieved when used together with the 1:1 Balun. The tuner used was an in-built Elecraft KX-2 ATU. Some further experiments will be conducted to test the manual Z-match or similar , balance-line-ready tuner. Stay tuned!I designed my own 3D-printed Dipole Centre for this antenna. Is Elecraft AX1 antenna efficient? It depends on mounting! LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-07-01 | Many Ham Radio portable operators owning the Elecraft KX2 transceiver also have a super-compact AX1 portable antenna. It is a base-loaded short telescoping whip with just some 115cm of antenna body in the air. Lots of hams use it in a walkie-talkie style mounted directly to the BNC connector on the radio. Sometimes, operators don’t even use a single radial supplied with the kit. It’s a big mistake! In this video, I make a small experiment with two different mounting styles of the AX1: a “ walkie -talkie” style with one radial vs bike-mounted style with 3 radials on the ground. LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-06-18 | This video deals with some unexpected problem faced by almost one third of all High-band QDXs manufactured - low power output on 10m band.QDX High-band digital transceiver for Ham Radio covers amateur radio digital modes frequencies in 20,17,15,12,11 and 10 meter bands. 11m band is not a Ham Radio but CB band, nevertheless, there is, obviously, some FT8 mode activity among non-amateurs too, so this radio for them also.I have tested my own 9V QDX and you can see the results of my tests.I also discuss the possible ways to cure the problem. How to run multiple WSJT-X on one computer, FT8 under different callsigns and separate QSO logs. LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-03-19 | Enter Multiple WSJT-X Instances! Normally, it is easy to set a new callsign in the WSJT-X software. You can make FT8 contacts then under the different callsign. But the problem is that, in this case, the contacts you made will be logged in the same old log file within the WSJT-X together with all your other contacts under your other callsign. This would make very difficult to operate, for example, the special callsign and extract the contacts made under the new callsign into a separate logbook. This video explains how to configure multiple instances of WSJT-X program in order to have possibility to run different callsigns and have separate log files, all on the same computer. Is it feasible to make real DX-contacts on the QDX digital transceiver? LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-02-26 | QDX digital transceiver from the QRP Labs is a unique phenomena in the QRP community of Ham Radio. Featuring surprisingly high specs on receive, it puts out a clean, spurious-free 5W on transmit. It’s fully digital both on receive and transmit and can run all FSK modes (based on frequency shift, like FT8/FT4, RTTY and others, but no PSK31 though, which is based on the phase shift). The decoding power is such that this little radio easily decodes the weakest signals on HF bands. Watching all these weak signals on the waterfall of my WSJT-X app, I was curious if I could make any contact with those DX (distant) stations across the world? The Secret Setting in Fldigi blocks your QDX transceiver from transmitting. Solved! LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-01-24 | The Ham Radio QDX Digital transceiver from the QRP Labs company is optimized for the FT8 work but is also capable of doing most of the other modes that are based on FSK (frequency shift keying). The most popular amongst these is , undoubtedly, the RTTY (Radio Teletype). It’s actually the only mode from all “old” digital modes still attracting large numbers of operators in the RTTY contests. The best ham radio accessory I wanted for my QCX/QDX transceivers! LY2H Ham Radio Van 2023-01-03 | Mini QRP SWR HF Short Wave Meter Power Meter + OLED + Battery + Based on G8GYW. It’s a long commercial name for a very small Ham Radio accessory. I wanted something small to measure my QDX and QCX transceivers (from QRPLabs) output power and antenna SWR , especially while operating outdoorsy. This tiny meter proved to be the right choice for me due to its nearly matchbox size and acceptable accuracy. This product is based on the open source project by Mike, G8GYW and his original design is publicly available on his Github site. The version of the commercial product in this video, though is a bit more sophisticated in that the USB-C port has been added and values of some components changed. The meter comes with no schematic diagram or links to it , as also without a link to the firmware upgrade.
