The park’s name translates from Portuguese to “bedsheets of Maranhão,” a reference to the sprawling smooth sand dunes.The park runs along more than 40 miles of coast and stretches inland for another 3o miles. With such a large expanse of sand and nearly no vegetation, it would be easy to assume this park is classified as a desert. However, deserts, by definition, receive less than 10 inches of rain in a year, and Lençóis Maranhenses National Park has an average rainfall almost five times that.For the first half of the year, the sand dunes are the site of constant rainstorms. This rainfall gathers in the valleys between the dunes, creating an entire lagoon system that encompasses miles of interconnected leftover rainwater. Mid-year, when the water has reached its peak, the lagoons can reach an amazing depth of 10 feet.Incredibly, these temporary water sources are not devoid of life, despite their unique method of formation. Some of the lagoons attach themselves to permanent water sources, such as nearby rivers, and fish freely move between the permanent and the temporary waters.Once the rainy season has ended, the heat of the sun works fairly quickly, evaporating all the rainwater lagoons in the span of just a few months. The ambience and natural beauty of the Cinque Terre are the main attractions and each of the five villages has its own personality. The five towns that make up the Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso - began life as medieval fortified settlements, each protected by a castle overlooking the sea guarding against Saracen raiders.If you have enough time, it's worth exploring Cinque Terre over a few days. The towns are relatively small, and you can travel between them in only a few minutes by train. If you are short on time you can definitely see the best of Cinque Terre in only one day.Manarola, built on a high rock 70 meters above sea level, is one of the most famous villages of the scenic Cinque Terre coastline. The village has a small harbor with a boat ramp, picturesque multicolored houses facing the sea and a tiny piazza with seafood restaurants.Vernazza is maybe the most famous of the Cinque Terre villages and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. For a great view you can also climb the Doria tower (small fee).Riomaggiore is considered to be the most romantic of the Cinque Terre villages, ideal for young travelers or couples looking for a base which is great to hang around in during the day and also has some nightlife. Near the picturesque harbor you will find Bed & Breakfasts with sea views perfect for couples on a romantic getaway.The village is basically a cascade of multi-colored houses in the typical Ligurian style, all tightly clustered around a tiny natural harbor carved out in between the rocks. This is, in our opinion, the best sunset spot in Cinque Terre. Monterosso is the largest of the five villages and has a long sandy beach in the new part of the village, just in front of the station, with sunbeds, umbrellas and SUP boards for rent. The tiny village is surrounded by vineyards located on typical Ligurian terraces. To reach Corniglia is necessary to climb the Lardarina (377 steps) or to take the shuttle bus from the station. It's the only town in the Cinque Terre that can't be reached by sea.Corniglia is a coastal village full of charm and it's not as busy and crowded as the other towns. There are narrow streets with the houses in those beautiful Ligurian pastel colours. Follow the main street to the Corniglia viewpoint.For those who are looking for a quiet place to stay in Cinque Terre, Corniglia is the right place. Because of its size and relative inaccessibility, fewer tourists stay here, so there is more of a local feel. There are a few high-quality hotels in Corniglia, all with amazing sea views. At the time of its construction, in 1929, the Navajo Bridge was the highest steel arch bridge in the United States, and for the next 66 years it served as the only crossing of the Colorado River for 600 miles.During construction, a ferry was essential for transporting men, tools, construction materials and heavy building equipment. However, on June 7, 1928, high waters, a weakened ferryboat, and worn cables resulted in disaster. The ferry capsized with three men and a Model T Ford on board. Coconino County refused to replace the ferry, causing extensive construction delays. For the next seven months, construction equipment and materials were brought in by truck, requiring an 800-mile journey around the canyon.The bridge was functional for the era in which it was constructed. However, its load capacity of 22.5 tons and width of just 18 feet failed to serve the needs of modern vehicles. Studies began in the early 1990s to determine the best solution to the problem. Consideration was given to strengthening the bridge, but the costly option was deemed impractical. Several alternate sites were considered, but the final decision was to build a stronger and wider parallel bridge beside the existing structure. Descriptions, paintings and photographs can only do so much to illustrate the scale and power of the Falls, or the majesty of the Zambezi above the Falls. To experience the Falls is to not only see them, but to hear them, to feel them - the spray on your face and to taste it in the air. From the nearby town of Victoria Falls, you can hear the Falls at high water, the constant ever present roar of 'the Smoke that Thunders’.Scottish explorer David Livingstone may have named the falls after his reigning queen in 1855, but the Kalolo-Lozi people had their own name for it — Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” And you immediately know why after seeing the plumes of mist that hover around the largest waterfall in the world as it roars over the edge.Above the Falls the Zambezi river is renowned for its beauty, again especially at high water, with banks and islands of luscious vegetation and abundant wildlife. Add to these sights the sounds of the river, the grunting of half submerged hippo, the hauntingly beautiful cry of the fish eagle and the constant background thunder of the Falls, and you have a small piece of paradise. It was this section of the river, and not the Falls themselves, that inspired David Livingstone to write: "scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight". Livingstone envisioned the river as the means by which Africa was to be opened up to Christian civilization and trade, and described the Zambezi as 'God’s Highway’.You could see the spray all the way from the Zambian town of Livingstone as you make our way to Victoria Falls.
