Chirag starts by placing treats at the back of the porch, teaching Miska that it's the best place to be. He then gradually opens the door in small steps, rewarding Miska with treats whenever she stays inside. Chirag emphasises the importance of using plenty of treats to reinforce the desired behaviour quickly.
He recommends breaking the training into small steps for faster progress. Chirag also advises using a leash and collar if the training area isn't secure, and suggests starting with indoor training or using a different door before training at the front door.
As the training progresses, Chirag demonstrates how the door can open wider while Miska continues to stay inside. If your dog accidentally goes outside, Chirag advises waiting calmly and allowing them to realise that nothing exciting happens outside. Once they come back inside, the training can continue.
Chirag introduces foot movement into the training, rewarding Miska for staying still as he takes steps outside the door. He gradually increases the distance until he can take a full step outside. Chirag explains that the ultimate goal is for the dog to stay behind a white barrier, allowing them to be anywhere in the porch.
Throughout the video, Chirag highlights the positive side effects of this training, such as teaching dogs to remain calm and composed when observing their surroundings. He concludes by encouraging viewers to practice this training method and shares a clear signal to let your dog know when they can come out and have fun.

We explore how dogs learn that certain consequences follow their response to your recall signal. For instance, a dog may come back faster if you shout loudly because they've learned that not responding has negative consequences. On the other hand, a dog can also learn that even a quiet or clear tone prompts a quick response because it's associated with positive outcomes.
If your dog isn't responding to your recall, the solution isn't to shout louder. Instead, we recommend "paying louder." By making it easier for your dog to come back to you, setting them up for success, and providing ample rewards, you can reinforce their desire to respond promptly to your call.
We provide practical examples to illustrate this concept. For instance, if your dog struggles with recall, try reducing the distance and get closer to them before calling their name. You can then show them what you expect by running towards you, followed by rewarding them with multiple treats or engaging in fun games and play.
Remember, recall training doesn't have to be about shouting louder; it's about paying attention and rewarding appropriately. By implementing these techniques, you'll strengthen the bond with your furry companion and enjoy a more reliable recall response.

Safety is a top priority, especially if you're practicing this at your front door. We recommend having your dog on a leash or using baby gates to create a safe space in case they try to dash out. Chirag starts by selecting a behaviour that is incompatible with being at the door, in this case, standing on a designated blue bed away from the door. The key is to reward the desired behaviour with something that motivates your dog to repeat it.
Gradually, we introduce the door handle movement, rewarding the dog for staying on the bed while we manipulate the door handle. We emphasise the importance of going at a pace that ensures success, stepping back a few stages if the dog struggles. By using treats, we encourage the dog to stay on the bed longer, as sniffing promotes relaxation. This creates an opportunity for a calm entry into the house.
As we enter, we continue to provide treats to help them acclimatise to our presence. This method allows the dog to focus on the treats rather than becoming overly excited or jumping up. By employing these simple and kind techniques, you can make a positive impact on your dog's behaviour, creating a safer and more relaxed environment for both you and your furry friend.

Craig shares his perspective on individualised training and the importance of reading each dog's behaviour. He highlights the need to adapt our training methods to suit the specific needs of each dog, rather than following a fixed recipe. Craig also explains the concept of reinforcing behaviour and how it relates to creating a positive training experience for dogs.
We discuss markers of stress and how they can be interpreted as part of a learning journey.
