The history of American military aviation is defined by a constant push for greater range and payload, a doctrine crystallized during the uncertain years preceding the Second World War. In 1938, as the Nazi Party gained total power in Europe, American military planners secretly asked a terrifying question: what if Britain fell?. The only way to strike back at Axis powers from the continental United States was to resurrect the concept of the Experimental Bomber Long Range. This led to the creation of the Douglas XB-19, an aircraft of unprecedented scale featuring a 212-foot wingspan and requiring over two million hours of research and development. The XB-19 boasted giant tires that were eight feet high and a rudder covering 237 square feet of movable surface.
While the XB-19 served as a crucial proof-of-concept, the urgent demands of the war necessitated an even more capable intercontinental bomber. In late 1941, the United States approved the development of the Consolidated B-36, a behemoth designed to push a massive 163-foot fuselage through the air using six pusher-type engines. The B-36, affectionately known as the Peacemaker, rolled out just days after the surrender of Japan and made its maiden flight on August 8, 1946, under the command of Captain Beryl A. Erickson.
Early testing of the XB-36 revealed significant challenges associated with giantism, most notably the incredible vibration generated by its powerful engines and severe cooling issues at high altitudes. Furthermore, the prototype's massive 100-inch single main wheels restricted the aircraft to a mere three runways in the entire country, forcing engineers to quickly adapt a four-wheel bogie system to distribute the phenomenal weight.
Despite these initial hurdles, the B-36 Peacemaker emerged as the very pinnacle of successful giantism. To counter the threat of enemy interceptors, Convair engineers eventually added four turbojet engines housed in pods near the wingtips, famously giving the aircraft the slogan "six turning and four burning". Inside the colossal pressurized cabin, crew members had access to a galley with a two-burner stove and sleeping quarters, essential for missions that could span vast oceans. However, traversing between the forward and aft pressurized sections required pulling oneself on a small trolley through a narrow, 80-foot tunnel.
This documentary, featuring fully upscaled, restored, and colorized archival footage, delves deep into the fascinating engineering and geopolitical circumstances that birthed the largest conventional warplane ever built. We explore the triumphs and tribulations of the B-36 program, from its early blueprints to its crucial role as America's big stick during the dawn of the Cold War.
