Marjan Forest Park, a natural area that is an integral part of Split. Marjan was declared a forest park in 1964 due to its natural beauty. Historically, the area was covered with native vegetation, but deforestation and fires left it barren until afforestation efforts began in the 1850s with Aleppo pine. Over time, the lack of proper forest management led to an overgrowth of Aleppo pine, which became susceptible to bark beetle infestations, exacerbated by climate change.
To combat the bark beetle infestation, infected and dead trees are being removed to help rejuvenate the forest. Moving forward, further monitoring will determine the next steps in forest restoration. The removal of diseased trees has also allowed more sunlight to reach native vegetation, aiding its regrowth. Experts predict that in 20–30 years, Marjan could become a beautiful mixed forest once again.
