Another of Eliot’s preppy novels sits with its arms folded and it’s mouth wheeling around on our carpet. The more I read of her earlier work, the more I realise how - subconsciously - ‘Adam Bede’ and ‘Romola’ and whichever others we may wish to mention, were simply training exercises before her larger game in 1877!
