As we convened for Holy Convocation, brothers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia gathered with Americans who identify as African American, Haitian, West Indian, Hispanic, and other cultural backgrounds. Though our music, preaching, and expressions of worship reflected the richness of our diverse cultures, a certain sound emerged in our collective prayer and praise.Every time that sound arose, there was a powerful eruption of the Spirit among us. It transcended culture, ethnicity, nationality, geography, language, and even various flaws, maturity levels, ages, and spiritual ranks. 👀There was something about that sound...that resonance...that frequency. It took us somewhere.The truth is, this was not the first time I have witnessed it. I have observed it repeatedly over the last six years as I have gathered with Black people across this country, in the United Kingdom, and in other settings throughout the African Diaspora. For many of us, this summer has been a traumatic DOOZIE!! This week alone, I have painfully learned that when people cannot withstand the shaking, they will make crazy moves, let decoys and distractions dictate their decisions, ditch vital relationships and processes needed to mature them... and then call it God! What Did Yeshua REALLY Mean When He Told us to Love? It May Not be What You Think! Bishop S. Most of us did not celebrate Pentecost as a feast. We celebrated what happened at Pentecost, thereby removing the purpose of the feast for a people coming out of oppression. We have shouted, danced, spoken in tongues, some have fasted and prayed, and we have celebrated. Ok, so what, and now what? What should we be doing with all that we have preached and celebrated on last Sunday, and the Sundays leading up to Pentecost or the Christian end of things?Well, 30-40 years ago, few black churches even liturgically celebrated Pentecost.
