"On this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved if you cannot be both."
"He who is the cause of another becoming powerful is ruined; because that predominancy has been brought about either by astuteness or else by force, and both are distrusted by him who has been raised to power."
1. When to acquire it. 2. How to acquire it. 3. When not to attempt acquiring it.
"The wish to acquire is in truth very natural and common, and men always do so when they can, and for this they will be praised, not blamed; but when they cannot do so, yet wish to do so by any means, then there is folly and blame."
Machiavelli advised against staying neutral in a conflict, stating that decisive and bold action is required to gain (or stay in) power. In his eyes, many leaders who try to stay neutral, end up being destroyed. This video explains why.
A key idea from The Prince is for a leader to "be on the spot". In order to hold onto power, Niccolo Machiavelli states it is a vital tool. Here we see why and how it can be interpreted in a modern context.
The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli is the most influential work on political power ever written. It consists of 26 chapters, with the book split into two, roughly equal parts. The first half covers how to gain power and the second concerns how to hold onto that power once you have gained it. Machiavelli's writing has stressed the need to be real, rather than focusing on what is ideal.
The book has influenced many leaders all over the world from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to Napoleon Bonaparte and Joseph Stalin. To this day it has an extensive effect on politics and ethics.
In this video, I give a brief overview of Machiavelli's most influential strategies and ideas, including examples featuring commanders such as Alexander the Great.

P. T. Barnum took promoting and showmanship to another level. He went into the circus business at the age of 60 and built a fortune, transporting his circus via the railroad on his own train. He wrote a book called "The Art of Money Getting: Golden Rules for Making Money" highlighting how to make (and more importantly keep) money. What's remarkable is that this advice has stood the test of time and many current millionaires and billionaires from the present day have utilised the strategies Barnum discusses.
