Grenadiers keep rolling, score eight first-half TDs in rout of Trojans

WILKES-BARRE — It was a scoring frenzy for the GAR Grenadiers as they defeated Nanticoke 68-0.
The Grenadiers (8-1) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard going up 14-0 early in the first quarter before two special teams miscues by the Trojans (2-6) gave GAR good field position inside the Nanticoke 20. GAR took advantage of opportunities and scored two more touchdowns to go up 27-0.
GAR eventually held a 55-0 lead going into the half.
"We didn't really make much adjustment at all," Nanticoke coach Ron Bruza said. "We tried to control the football. That was our goal of the game. We started off well, and then the wheels just came off the bus."
GAR senior quarterback Darrell Crawford led the offensive charge, as he accounted for 214 total yards of offense. Crawford rushed seven times for 169 yards for two touchdowns and went 2-for-3 passing for 45 yards and a touchdown, including a 37-yard strike to senior wide receiver Shaliek Powell.
"Phenomenal job by Darrell," GAR coach Paul Wiedlich Jr. said. "Just a class act, heck of an athlete. He's a competitor."
Despite being a weapon on offense, Crawford proved he is dangerous on special teams as well, returning back-to-back punts for touchdowns -- the first for 69 yards and the second for 68 yards.
"I just saw a crease and Dwayne (Wright) threw two blocks on both of those punt returns to get me into the end zone," Crawford said.
The Grenadiers defense did its part as well, shutting out the Trojans and holding them to 91 total yards. Shaliek Powell contributed to the effort with an interception to stall the Trojans only drive that reached the red zone.
Already qualified for the District 2 playoffs, Wiedlich is keeping his team focused on playing good football.
"Hopefully we have a couple more games left in us," Wiedlich said. "The motivation is there, they know we have a job to do, and we have to be a well-oiled machine going into the playoffs."
The Grenadiers close out the regular season at Meyers next Saturday, while the Trojans play at Hanover Area on Friday.
