"I chose to birth in power, to birth the way I had known to be true before. "
~ Gabby @hippy.welder, North Carolina

"Contractions were intense and made me stop in my tracks. I went to bed and woke up to a contraction around 3am. It was uncomfortable enough that I got up, went to the living room, and tried to move around. I quickly felt them getting more intense and started keeping track of them. In one hour they went from manageable, to on my hands and knees leaned over the couch. I was having one every seven minutes to one every 3. Between contractions I went to the bedroom to wake Hayden up. I told him we might actually have a baby tonight.

I called my friend Hannah to start driving, she was an hour away but a women from by women’s circle and also going to be taking photos for me. She answered the phone excited and we felt giddy together. Then I called my friend Austen who was sleeping upstairs. She asked if I wanted company and I said yes. In my first birth I was set on having no one, but through this pregnancy I realized how sacred women bonds are. How sacred to be held by other women as we go through this portal of birth. So she came to keep me company. As soon as I was off the phone my waters broke. It was a huge relief of pressure. A popping feeling and then surges of fluid coming out. I didn’t get to experience that with my first. Within another hour I was in the hot tub. I was finally getting to use it the way I intended.

Contractions were on top of each other and hard. I remember just telling myself to release control, release tension, to open my body up and let baby come down. Not to be afraid of the quickness. I moved around the hot tub until contractions felt unbearable. Hannah and Austen provided encouragement and guidance, telling me I was doing amazing, or it would be soon, giving me water.

I felt myself for baby’s head and it was still so far up. I’d been in the pool for a long time, contractions stayed consistent and painful. I had some honey sticks between but there wasn’t any relief in between, maybe 2 minutes or so. I was thinking how beautiful it was out in the hot tub. It felt amazing, levitating in the water, tiny lights from above shining down, I kept submerging my body because it was so cold outside. I think it ended up being 30 degrees outside. It was a full moon which is when baby was conceived too. The moon was so bright.

After awhile the sun started coming up, birds started making noise, the dog came outside and barked, Welly was still asleep through all of this. I was so frustrated and annoyed that the world was waking up and interrupting me, I said I wanted to go back into the bathroom. Hannah stayed with me and I felt like there was a break. Hannah and I talking calmly for a minute about how I’m feeling and doing. She was the perfect person to be there, energetically, support wise.

It came to a point where I wanted this baby out so badly. I got on the toilet since that’s what happened in my first birth and it hurt so badly! Baby’s head was way down, almost out, and I was forcefully pushing each time there was a contraction. I kept saying how much I wanted this to be over. I felt baby’s head coming out and needed to get to the floor, his head came out and I was urging my husband to pull him out the rest of the way. Hayden said no, he wasn’t so I started pushing my baby’s head away from me until Hayden (pretty immediately) told me he was doing it just to get me to stop. It was a few more contractions and some waiting time…. 8 or 9 minutes later, his body comes out. We found our little boy to be so perfect. Hannah was telling us how awesome we were and she and I got a small moment to laugh about how forceful I was. Moments later, the placenta came out with a slight tug. Hayden brought Welly in and she came running in screaming, “give me my baby! I want to hold my baby!” So we all moved to the bed and got cozy together as a family of 4."
