From superstars like Beyonce, Brad Pitt, Winona Ryder and Robert De Niro to institutions like SNL, Helen Uffner’s collection has been worn by practically everybody and has been an invaluable part of countless productions.
However, Helen is also grappling with the imminent loss of her space of only 2 ½ years. Without assistance from the city and state to preserve and assist the small businesses that fuel the entertainment industry we risk losing her irreplaceable resources and experience.
The Costume Industry Coalition was created to advocate for the survival of our community beyond this crisis. The CIC launched a GoFundMe Charity page to help relieve a portion of the deficit that is faced. These funds will provide immediate assistance for the costume industry and businesses like Helen Uffner Vintage Clothing. These businesses are a vital but often unseen ecosystem of artists who have been hard hit by the COVID-19 shutdowns and have gone for months without sustainable income or safety nets.
Join us as we learn more about Helen, her background that led her into the entertainment industry, take a peek at her incredible collection and find out how she is navigating through this pandemic.

Save The Costume IndustryOne Year Later - The Entertainment Industry ShutdownCostume Industry Coalition2021-03-13 | On March 12th, 2020 the entertainment industry shutdown. It came to a screeching halt and all our businesses ceased operations.
By May the Costume Industry Coalition began to organize and mobilize. Initially it included the costume makers in New York City but quickly we began to recognize our industry is an ecosystem that includes dressmakers, tailors, milliners, crafters along with embroiderers, pleaters, painters, shirt makers, printers, knitters, beaders, sculptors, plus specialty vendors, the last costume rental shop in the city and the dry cleaner to Broadway. Our over 500 costume artisans and experts are involved in every aspect of the costume industry, from concept to care.
Since we started, we partnered with a Non-for-profit fiscal sponsor, The Artisans Guild of America, and began fundraising for our Recovery Fund. We also began lobbying the government to ensure the creative economy gets the relief it needs. A year later we are still recovering but we are ALL ready to get back to work. We’ve travelled a very long road and we know we still have a long way to go. But as the entire entertainment industry is poised to begin its recovery, the support we have received has fortified us with the strength to push forward. We can’t thank you enough.A Special Message from the Gilded Age Design TeamCostume Industry Coalition2021-02-18 | The wonderful design team of HBO’s Gilded Age, Costume Designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone Assistant Costume Designers Patrick Wiley and Isabelle Simone have a special message for you in support of the Costume Industry Coalition and our Recovery Fund! A few weeks ago, Pulitzer Prize, Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda added his voice to the many in the entertainment industry supporting the Costume Industry Coalition (CIC) .
In his video testimonial, Miranda celebrated the hundreds of costume experts who create, supply and care for costumes for the stage and screen, not only in New York City, but around the world.
With over 60 years of experience, Carlos brings a level of knowledge, craftsmanship and literal tricks of the trade, and the CIC is fighting to make sure he has an artistic home to continue to bring his expertise to the field. Hillary Clinton has always been a supporter of the Arts. In a recent New York Times virtual panel, she was bemoaning the fact that she misses live theatre. She also tweeted her support for our partner Be An #ArtsHero, the grassroots organization lobbying Congress for comprehensive arts relief. That prompted the CIC to reach out to Secretary Clinton, and revisit the indelible connection she has to our Members.
Having Secretary Clinton’s support has motivated the CIC Members to continue advocating for our collective survival. With your contributions, both through donations and sharing our story, we will ensure these our Members--and the artisans they employ--can survive this crisis and continue to bring magic to stages and screens for years to come.
