Pharr Mounds Along The Natchez Trace Parkway Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-10-20 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each along with us on this beautiful day. Today we were blessed with a adventure coming back home up the Natchez Trace parkway from Tupelo. We had to run a errand down to Tupelo and thankful that Lyle was able to take us. It was his wonderful idea to come back home up a stretch of the Natchez Trace I have not been on. "PHARR MOUNDS, located 20 miles north of Tupelo, Mississippi on the Natchez Trace Parkway, is the most important archaeological site in northern Mississippi. It's also the largest, containing 8 dome shaped mounds spread over an area the size of 100 football fields. The Pharr Mounds date from the Middle Woodland Culture. People were at this site between 100 B.C. and 200 A.D."Although the builders of these mounds traveled to hunt and trade, they probably stayed at a village most of the year. Archaeologists have discovered a village here that was occupied as much as 400 years before the mounds were built."Artifacts recovered in 1966 indicate that the builders of these mounds were a part of the "HOPEWELL INTERACTION SPHERE" that had a far reaching trade network and was centered in Ohio and Illinois. Large ceremonial burial complexes like this one were a characteristic of the Hopewell Tradition."The Pharr mounds were built by first constructing a low, clay platform where log tombs were built or graves were dug to prepare a crematory basin. In ceremonies the dead were cremated or placed in tombs or graves along with objects to reflect the importance of the deceased. The site was covered over with dirt and cremations, until the large dome shape was constructed and the final layer of soil was placed on top. Now if you don't want to make the salve with this oil you can just use the oil and use it sparingly for your ailments. It is a blessing to finally be able to get my hands on a big batch of fresh sassafras leaves and young twigs. Have been wanting some fresh sassafras leaves for many years and could not find the trees where we used to live. Either they were destroyed or someone came in and took every tree down which I don't doubt. Sassafras was highly used by the Cherokee and many of the Southeastern and Northeastern native tribes. It was the Native Americans who taught the settlers how to use the tree medicinally as well as culinary. Truth be known it was the Choctaw tribe who taught the Cajun and Creole people how to make and use the File' powder in cooking. The word "gumbo" actually comes from kombo, the Choctaw term for powdered sassafras. However with that being said the Africans who came over called "okra" gumbo in their language as well. So interesting historical information there. Personally very delighted to have once again a stock of File' powder. Not only are sassafras leaves delicious in many culinary dishes and in tea they are a very old well known medicinal blessing. Today we are going to talk about a important subject on detoxing your system especially your kidneys and liver. It is important to take care of your body to maintain optional health of your organs as well as your immune system. There are many ways to cleanse your kidneys as well as liver at the same time. It all starts with the mindset of becoming healthier through diet and sticking with it. Making better choices for what is consumed and how your surroundings play a factor in your daily life. Ultimately it is your choice on your journey to well-being the choices that you make. Below is a listing of healthy foods to add to your diet for optimal health of your liver and kidneys. Adjust your diet in order to add as many of the foods listed below for building a stronger healing foods regime. Blueberries, Acai berries, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, pomegranates, cranberries, citrus, pineapple, red grapes, apples, cauliflower, olive oil, avocado oil, garlic, onions, winter squash, radishes , turnips, bell peppers, carrots, beets, cabbage, skinless chicken, shellfish, fish, arugula, macadamia nuts, egg whites, shiitake mushrooms, yogurt, beans (especially kidney beans), stinging nettles and dandelion roots and leaves just to name a few. Please do your research and adjust accordingly especially in cases of kidney damage, cancer and kidney disease. Below are three recipes. One is for a kidney flush and two for kidney detox. They all also work to flush the liver as well. The best advice is to maintain as healthy of a lifestyle as possible so these mixes will aid in your overall health and well-being. Kidney Flush Tea 4 cups of distilled, spring or filtered water 1 cup of fresh dandelion leaves 1 tsp of turmeric 1/2 tsp of black pepper Juice of half a lemon 1 Tbsp honey or stevia Bring water and dandelion leaves in a pot to a light simmer. Remove from heat and let steep 15 minutes covered. Strain and mix remaining ingredients to the tea. Drink 1-2 cups per day for 7 days. Can repeat dosage every 3-4 weeks after first week. Kidney Detox Tea 1 1 cup of fresh stinging nettles or 1/2 cup dried 4 cups of filtered, spring or distilled water Honey or stevia to sweetenBring water and stinging nettles to a simmer. Cover, remove from heat and let steep 15 minutes. Strain and add tea and sweetener to cup. Can drink 1 cup every morning if desired. Cold or warm served your choice. Kidney Detox Tea 24 cups of filtered, spring or distilled water 1/2 cup stinging nettles fresh or dried1/2 cup dandelion roots fresh or dried 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar 1 Tbsp of lemon juice, fresh or bottledHoney to sweeten per cup Bring water, stinging nettles and dandelion roots to a simmer. Cover, remove from heat and let steep 15 minutes. Strain and add vinegar and lemon juice to the tea. You can add sweetener to cup when preparing to drink tea. Homemade hummus tastes so much better than anything you can buy in the store. You know exactly what is in it and it should end up being even more healthier for you. Below is my single hummus batch recipe. Always know you can change up the seasonings but keep the base ingredients the same. We are going to be talking about another amazing wild medicinal the narrow leaf plantain Plantago lanceolata. Personally love this little wild medicinal for its healing abilities as well as it's tenacity to grow wherever it can. It goes by so many other different names as: English plantain, narrow-leaved plantain, buckhorn plantain, lanceleaf plantain, ribgrass and ribwort. It all depends on where you live what it is called, but unfortunately too many just call it a weed. Plantain in general is a very versatile addition to the medicine cabinet being an antihistamine, antifungal, antioxidant, analgesic and even a mild antibiotic. Used as an antihistamine, it is very effective in dealing with nettle stings or insect bites and stings The leaves can also be used to make a tea that acts as an effective cough medicine, it stops diarrhea, helps to build up the lungs and the list goes on. Tonight I am going to show how to blend in green tea to make a herbal tea mix.Love to blend teas and the sky is the limit on what you can blend together. Main thing is to remember don't use something you are allergic to and don't use herbs that you don't enjoy. Other than that it is simple and easy to mix your own tea blends and have a good stock of teas to go to when you want a good cup of tea. Below is the ingredients list for this batch of tea. You can change things around and make your own. Just remember to try to keep everything basically the same size so you get a little bit of everything in the teabag. Green Tea Based Herbal Tea 1/2 cup of gunpowder green tea 1/2 cup of dried elderberries 1/2 cup of dried rosehips 1/2 cup dried blueberries Slices of dehydrated lime slicesMix all ingredients together except lime slices. Homemade Soup Beans My Way Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-10-11 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each in to our kitchen on this chilly evening. Tonight I am starting the process of making a batch of delicious 15 bean soup with cornbread. Absolutely love to start a batch of delicious soup beans. Then pairing it up with a phone of cornbread. Now that is Southern comfort food and it's best. Our Ancestors survived off of beans and several other staples. The aroma from a pot of cooking soup beans is a delightful aroma floating through the house. Below is my basic ingredients list of what I used for this batch of beans. Each pot of beans ends up being seasoned differently depending on the beans used. This is a basic starting point for those who don't know how to cook beans. All seasonings are optional if you use them or add others that you enjoy. If course the different meats you use will also change the flavor as well. Main thing is to experiment and always remember. There are so many different essential oils to use and the different combinations are practically unlimited. Two ingredients baking powder and your choices of essential oils is all you need to make your own. Homemade Carpet Deodorizer 6 cups of baking soda 30 drops of patchouli essential oil 20 drops of Frankincense essential oil 30 drops of Cedarwood essential oil 20 drops of Sandalwood essential oil Combine together and enjoy. Irish Tea Brack - Barmbrack Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-10-08 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each in to our kitchen on this beautiful evening. Tonight and the next day we are going to be making a beloved bread from my Irish heritage. Yes it has a little bit of a twist to it but it is one amazing delicious bread. There are so many variations of this amazing dense and light fruit cake. They are all delicious and the Irish women used what ingredients they had on hand. We are approaching the old beginning of the New Year in Celtic Tradition and this was a staple to be baked. It plays in with the harvests that have came in and is perfect for times of celebration. It is dark and rich and not overpowering with sweetness. Very high in so many nutrients that our body needs especially iron, potassium, magnesium and the list goes on. Some of the older customs that were added in to the loaves before baking are: A pea, a dried pea, the person would not marry.A piece of cloth, the person would have bad luck or would be poor.A coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich.A ring, the person would be married within the year. Below is my version of this Traditional Irish delight. It is so rich in flavor and love to make it this time of year. If you don't have dates definitely use the customary golden raisins. This bread also freezes well as long as you wrap it up well.Irish Tea Brack - Barmbrack1 3/4 cups dried raisins 1 3/4 cups dried snipped dates2 TBsp's of lemon extract or zest of 1 large lemon 2 TBsp's of orange extract or zest of one largest orange 1 1/3 cups of light brown sugar (dark brown sugar is preferred)2 heaping TBsp's of molasses (only use if using light brown sugar)2 cups of hot water 3 bags of Irish breakfast tea3 cups of all purpose flour 3 tsp's of baking powder 1 tsp of Himalayan pink salt 2 tsp's of cinnamon 1 tsp of powdered ginger 1 tsp of freshly grated nutmeg 2 eggs wishedHoney drizzle (optional)2 TBsp's of lemon extract About a 1/2 cup of local raw honey Butter to grease the deep dish pie plate or cake pan and to spread on the warm slice of cake/bread.Preheated oven at 325*. Bake for 80-90 minutes. Till knife comes out clean. Hope this video encourages you to also make this amazing delicious Traditional Irish fruit cake. Homemade Cheddar Cheese Cornbread Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-10-07 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each in to our kitchen this beautiful evening. Tonight I am making some homemade cheddar cheese cornbread for Jr and wanted to bring you along with me as well. There is just something magical about a fresh hot buttered piece of cornbread and homemade hamburger soup or any other dinner. Cornbread is just pure comfort in my opinion. Personally can eat it alone and be just as happy. It's one of my various snack foods between meals or a meal by itself. Below is my recipe for my cornbread and it has stood the test of time for 46 years of me mixing it up when I have a chance to do so. Also use this same recipe for hoecakes. My Homemade Cornbread 1 1/2 cups of yellow cornmeal 3/4 cups of all purpose flour 4 tsp's of baking powder 1 tsp of Himalayan pink salt 2 large eggs 1/4 melted butter 1 1/4 cups of whole milk Mix all ingredients together. Bake in 400* preheated oven for 20-30 minutes depending on your pan. If making larger batches bake till knife inserted comes out clean and cornbread is a golden brown. Today we are going to head out to adventure in the woods looking for pine resin to make a salve. Finely once again heading in to the woods to look for pine resin. It feels so wonderful to be back in to the woods and the earthy smell is something that I have been missing so badly. Of course we are going to be safe and sound being watched over by the guardians. We are looking for pine resin on this beautiful day to gather to make another very important infused oil for salves. The medicinal benefits of pine resin is very important to have in a stocked medicinal arsenal. Pine resin is a very strong medicinal when used externally for wounds, splinters and embedded glass. It is also a drawing medicinal to pull out infections, pus and toxins from poisonous insect and snake bites. The infused oil can be used on your chest the same as Vicks rub. It also helps with insect bites, rashes and inflammation. Pine resin is a antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory to name a few of its medicinal benefits. Goldenrod - is a strong decongestant, effectively alleviating upper respiratory congestion stemming from allergies, sinusitis, flu, or the common cold. It can clear up the itchy watery eyes and other ailments. It also dries up excessive mucus buildup. Stinging Nettles - helps to boost the immune system while calming seasonal allergies, colds, flu sinuses and other ailments. Full of vitamins and minerals to boost the body's nutritional needs while healing you within. Anise hyssop -fever reducer, cough suppressant, can also be used to relieve congestion, acting as an expectorant which clears mucus from nasal cavity, lungs and airways.Lemongrass- it has a calming effect on the nervous system, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal as well as anti-inflammatory. Rosehips - are a important part of building white blood cells. Also contain massive amounts of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin K to name just a few. Tonight I am going to be mixing up my Cajun Seasoning mix. As a young child I always loved sitting in front of the TV on Saturday morning watching Justin Wilson and many others cooking. My mother had first came across the kit at one of the salvage stores. Well eventually they quit making the kit. So took it upon myself to invent my own version of it and have been making it ever since. Always make sure to make a big batch of chili so I can make this childhood comfort food. Below is the recipe for my homemade Cornbread or you can use your own recipe:My Blue Ribbon Winning Cornbread 1 1/2 cups of plain yellow cornmeal 3/4 cup of all purpose flour 4 tsp's of baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp of pink Himalayan salt Black pepper Garlic powder 1 Tbsp of dried minced onions1/4 cup melted butter 2 large eggs 1 1/4 cups of Bulgarian buttermilk 400* oven bake for at least 30 minutes. My Homemade Chili Powder Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-09-30 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each in to the kitchen this beautiful evening. Today I am finally getting around to making up another batch of my homemade chili powder. There is nothing like a huge hug from making some comfort food. It reminds you of cherished memories and brings peace within. It's even better when you are able to make it from scratch knowing exactly what is going in to it and that it's preservative, binder and chemical free. Below is my own chili powder recipe and you can also change it to suit your tastes. Just remember to keep it a basis of paprika. My Homemade Chili Powder 2 tsp's of coriander seeds 3 TBsp's of dried minced onions 2 TBsp's of dried oregano 2 TBsp's of dried rubbed sage 1/2 cup of sweet paprika 4 tsp's of smoked paprika 3 TBsp's of garlic powder 1/2 tsp of cayenne pepper powder 2 tsp's of Chipotle pepper powder 4 tsp's of cumin powder 1 1/2 TBsp's of Pink Himalayan salt 1 1/2 tsp's of white pepper Blend all ingredients together and store in a air tight container. Homemade Plantain Quick Bread Old Ways Gardening and Prepping 2024-09-24 | Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each in to the kitchen with me on this beautiful evening. Tonight we are going to make a delicious and easy plantain quick bread. Was blessed with some plantains and definitely going to put them to good use. Try your best not to waste anything especially when you are gifted food. It has been a long time since I have been blessed to have plantains so once again going to make a delicious quick bread that me and Jr can have for breakfast in the morning. Below is the ingredient list so you can also make you and your family a loaf or two. 😉Homemade Plantain Quick Bread 2 cups of all purpose flour 1 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp of baking soda 1/2 tsp of salt 2 ripe plantains 1/2 cup of butter 1 cup of cane sugar 2 large eggs 1/4 cup whole milk 1/3 cup of sour cream or Greek yogurt 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp of grated or powdered nutmeg 1 tsp of cinnamon 1/2 cup of raisins 1/2 cup of walnuts350* preheated oven for 60-65 minutesHope this video encourages you to try new foods and broaden the foods you add in to your diet.
