great soundtrack for a quirky little arcade-style game. i suspect this actually was, at some point, slated to be released via Taito Type X or similar and just wound up on the cutting room floor until last year. the game has many dithered graphics, and though the audio has been resampled and stored at 48khz, it only uses 32khz of bandwidth. still sounds plenty good, though.
an oddball upload, but here are the voices from Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf. i ripped these for my own use some time ago but never posted them for some reason.
they've been cleaned up a bit here. the ADPCM-A data was converted to a usable format, and then resampled up to 48khz without interpolation. this was lowpassed to remove extraneous garbage. this was then combined with another copy of the voice audio, which was declipped, declicked, and heavily spectrally repaired in RX7. the result is something a little easier on the ears and more usable than how it sounds out of the gate.
the above ZIP includes this semi-clean version, an even cleanear (but more spectrally smeared) version, the aliased resampled version, and the raw (and deafening) 18.5khz conversion.

brilliant soundtrack. has a lot of the same oldschool boom bap sensibilities Yuzo tapped into on his previous Super Adventure Island soundtrack. not a ton of remaster work done on this one. tracks were declipped as the entire thing was mastered extremely loudly. there's still distortion, but it's somewhat reduced. pushing it any further would just result in nasty artifacts. jingles and loops stored as sound effects are not included due to general hassle and them being exceptionally low quality.
a couple of the jingles, "Vision Orb" and "A New Power Returns To The Hall Of Life" have their original names swapped (seemingly) in the ingame sound test based on how they're used in the game itself. a number of tracks here have their names expanded to include all their uses cases.

Are you a poin master?
currently working on a nice remaster of the whole soundtrack and will eventually have some big scans of the documentation prepared.
i highly recommend this game. it's extremely funny and wholesome. archive.org/details/poinies-poin_202012
LYRICS:
Adults, they will never know
their mysterious power!
Embrace feeling that you can play
Use your special power now!
It just might feel good!?
Maybe you can do it too?
Go ahead and try now!
Feelings are natural things.
Try changing them with Poins!
Are you a Poinmaster?!
Laugh, Cry, Get Angry! Yeah, Poin!
Again and again! And again!
Happy dynamite!
Yippie Yo!! everybody!
All of the boys and kids
are feeling so fine.
When you're feeling down and blue
try to sing or just fart.
Do, Do-do do-do.
Try this and that and this that
or whatever it takes.
But try going here and there,
go wherever you need to.
Maybe you can use Poins?
Lose out, don't worry, give in!
Make a funny face! We love you!
Even Poin does!
That dangling fartball!
Yes, you can do it!
Laugh, Cry, Get Angry! Yeah, Poin!
Again and again! And again!
Happy dynamite!
Yippie Yo!! everybody!
Lose out, don't worry, give in!
Make a funny face! We love you!
Poinie and Poin!

killer soundtrack for a rather poor (but amazing nonetheless) piece of software. definitely sits among the best the mega drive has to offer. mastering here is just some chorus, saturation, EQing, and limiting. recorded from stock VA2 NTSC-U mega drive.

found this tape a couple years ago and am only finally getting around to recording it. cornball prog rock that lifts generously from its inspirations. KNIGHTSCAPE seems to have been some kind of theatre/musical group/troop/etc here in Hamilton. information is scarce. side B was pretty mangled but i did what i could to recover it.

Concerto of the Midnight Sun (aka Harmony of Dissonance) is probably my favorite Castlevania soundtrack. it gets a pretty bad rap, but it really is full of incredible ideas, often stuck fighting its technical limitations.
i started this project forever ago and will likely never finish it. the goal was to remaster the whole soundtrack using only the game's music sequencing (extracted to MIDI) and the game's mostly single-cycle waveforms. i limited myself to only being able to add effects to the multitracks rather than replace any of the instruments. so everything heard here - the organs, strings, choirs, and guitars are all the original sequencing and instruments/waveforms, just pushed through piles of audio effects. i wanted to express the extremes that the soundtrack makes me feel, especially in its most disorienting and hectic moments.
cheers.

having been my favorite DOOM WAD and WAD soundtrack since release, i'm finally getting around to this one! not much to say about this one - stewboy's whimsical, freewheeling melodies and chord progressions are on full display throughout. super inspiring stuff.
played back on a Roland SC-88Pro (set to SC-55 map, as it's closest to the Roland-sourced Microsoft sound set Stuart composed for) with Roland JV-1080 and KORG 05R/W performing left and right panned backup duty to fill out the mix. the MIDIs had to have their PPQN reduced from a few hundred to 96 for more stable hardware playback on the busier tunes, but no meaningful timing information was lost in the process. mastered using iZotope Ozone 9.

one of several soundtracks i've been sitting on for far too long - been meaning to wrap this one in particular up for a hot minute but needed to finish my latest playthrough to confirm track names. i'm sure there's one or two place names missing from the tracks attributed to multiple areas, but you get the idea.
seriously outlandish, captivating soundtrack by the always enigmatic Kota Hoshino. this is easily where he leans furthest into his outsider tendencies, showing total disregard for typical song structure in every sense. in one of his RocketBaby interviews regarding the first Evergrace title, he says "I tried to express the verge between Pop and non-Pop music." - i feel as though he's tapped into that here, as well.
for this release of the sountrack, i've decided to string the pieces together somewhat erratically, as the originals often lack loop points and stop on a dime before restarting. beyond that, minimal changes have been made. some filtering has been done to reduce aliasing. a few of the pieces seem to have been written at 44.1khz before being resampled poorly to 48khz - i've resampled back down to 44.1khz with r8brain and done what i can to filter out tinnitus frequencies without losing too much actual musical information.
i hope you enjoy it, or at least find it interesting.
"I'm very much interested in expressing 'Reality.' Everything that is made of 'Reality' has a great power." - Kota Hoshino

it looks and sounds like a digital master. did it leak at some point when being traded between DJs? maybe from a cutting facility when a dubplate was being made? i legitimately have no clue. but what i do know is that i've been searching for this since 2004, and through a great amount of random chance, it wound up in my lap.
all of Cris E. Manic's work is phenomenal. her approach to freeform is full of intensity and has a penchant for wandering off the beaten path in strange and fun ways. check out "Echelon", which was interestingly referenced (or lifted? it's dance music, this is common) by kors k (as teranoid) for the track "gigadelic.

from the film "Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam (1985)". no official soundtrack release exists, but the credits music is a bop and a half, so i decided to try to restore it from the DVD release, which is fairly lacking in the audio/video quality department. i've included the version direct from the film here too.

this is absolutely the worst record i own. wow.
recorded from mint quality record. de-popped/de-clicked/spectral noise reduction done with izotope rx7, general cleanup in ozone 8 after that. came out pretty well considering it's a picture disc from 1980.

i've been poking at this every now and again since the game's release and finally got around to finishing it up. better late than never, right? completing this was actually influenced by feeling let down by mario maker 2's edit mode arranges, which i don't think hold a candle to mario maker's.
the game stores each of its edit tracks in containers of (not terribly high quality) MP3s which loop forever and fade in and out while editing, giving the illusion that the piece is continually evolving while you work. naturally, this makes them a little hard to listen to on their own, as just playing all 7 channels at once results in a fairly busy, short looping piece.
the other thing keeping these from being a solid listen on their own is that there's no lead melody - this is played by the vocoded voice samples when the player places a piece in the editor. since there's no real way to include that, i (when possible) singled out the channels from the original tunes and included them. i'm fairly happy with the end result.
there are some cases where nothing could realistically be done. in a couple of the new classic themes, i had to either use nothing or the entire piece alongside the arranged music. as well, the NSMBU tunes can't really have anything done with them short of resequencing the original music from scratch, so it's just arrangements of the edit tracks.

this game's soundtrack kind of rules but is also kind of terribly jank. the sequencing is all over the place, the individual instrument loop timing is ridiculously bad, and the game's audio is stored as 22050hz 8bit mono WAV files. i've done what i can to make them a little nicer to listen to by aliasing them up to 44.1khz, introducing a stereo field, and doing some EQing & filtering.

it's extremely easy to write the soundtracks for TOMARUNNER and TOMALARC off within the first few minutes, but those willing to give it a full listen will be rewarded with an unhinged mix of hard techno, prog fusion, caricatures of traditional music, and absurdism.
TECHNOuchi (Space Manbow, Speed King, CIRCADIA, ChainDive, INSTANT BRAIN, D4) and Hideyuki Eto (Armored Core For Answer, Armored Core V) seem to be at the helm of this Desert Productions soundtrack, littering it with manic acid techno tracks while Mayuko Kageshita (Tokimeki Memorial, Sexy Parodius, Skygunner) and Jun Chuma (CRISIS FORCE, CIRCADIA) carry the quirky melodic side of things.
a number of these composers have worked with KONAMI in the past, and it seems that some tributes throughout, such as "REVENGE OF JAMMER" containing the same lyrics and vocal melodies as "Who'll be the hero" from VIOLENT STORM.
TOMALARC, the sequel/update to TOMARUNNER, was created in collaboration with L'Arc~en~Ciel (word has it that Hyde was such a fan of the first game that he approached SONY with the idea) and contains some cute arrangements of four of their hit singles.

the definition of slept-on, MAZ's soundtrack for BURSTRICK is full of their usual quirky techno and breakbeat rave-inspired jams. MAZ (sometimes credited Sven Maz and unrelated to Magnus Svensson (also known as "Maz") of the Amiga demoscene), who composed for several METRO titles, is a mysterious character. it is unknown if Sven Maz is their real name, and some of their credits are fairly obfuscated.

"Alien Soldier is like my baby… no, strike that, it is my baby. And she’s very cute. It was a difficult birth. In the end we had to perform a dangerous C-section on the mother. So she’s a premature birth…" - Hideyuki Suganami (NAMI), http://shmuplations.com/aliensoldier
ALIEN SOLDIER's soundtrack is not easily described. brutal unbecoming angst, a planet's death knell, a distant hope. NON pushes the Mega Drive sound chip to its logical extremes, creating wailing walls of grotesque FM organics.
the title screen rightfully screams "SOUNDSHOCK!" - this is the YM2612 heart on fire.

this is an older release, but i hadn't posted it yet for some reason.
this is my third remaster of the bomberman hero soundtrack (another popular one on youtube - youtube.com/watch?v=DXF2hy_MX2o - is my second), and the first time i wound up pairing emulated audio with a bunch of completely resequenced music. the original game's output is only 32khz and has some pretty crummy resampling care of the N64's totally wack sample interpolation, and while some of this was remedied with some EQ work and siblance restoration through overdrive, bitcrushing, and vocoding into white noise, it wasn't really enough, so big chunks of the soundtrack were resequenced from scratch using the game's audio data.
i've also released a pack of the game's instrument data in WAV (with sample loops) and ITI (impulse tracker instrument) formats: heckscaper.com/stuff/samples/bhero.zip - these are the same sound i used to rework parts of this soundtrack for this release.

one day, we heard music playing from somewhere in the store. we spent 15 minutes trying to track it down before we realized one of the photo frames was playing music. what the hell was the music though?!
so, i copied the MP3s from the SD card. these have more or less been following me around for the almost decade and a half since. after temporary losing track of them time and time again, i figure i should push them out in the public's consciousness.

🡻 INFORMATION 🡻
just some quick technical information on this one. this release includes three versions of the music. they are:
- a new REMASTER version by myself, based on the VGM rip by Duchemole @ vgmrips.net/packs/pack/liquid-kids-taito-f2-system - the sound channels were rendered out individually and given stereo panning, EQing, reverb, etc. this is with good reason, as this pack also includes, for reference:
- the original version from the TAITO F2 arcade hardware. this recording actually comes from the Saturn port's CD audio tracks, as the company handling the port, VING, recorded the music directly from the PCB. as an owner of the PCB, i attempted this myself, but my recordings were far too noisy. VING's aren't much better, but i was able to more easily reduce the noise on theirs. these recordings also show off the extremely limited output range of the hardware, as the frequency response takes a sharp dive from around 6khz upwards. it's also a little bit loud and clipped. i've done what i can to fix it up. lastly,
- the PC Engine version of the soundtrack. not sure who ported the music (maybe karu themselves?) but this rendetion of it is really cute. a little more "bleep-bloop" than much of the PC Engine's best music, but charming stuff. big thanks to Chris Covell @ chrismcovell.com for digging up some old tools neceesary for playing back the HES sound dump of the game back on real hardware. this was recorded using the PC Engine "Interface Unit" as it has the lowest noise floor of any of the PCE hardware i have available and was fairly easily reduced to near-zero.
that's all for this release - it's a soundtrack i've loved and wanted to give some proper love for a long time. Zuntata has given it an iTunes release available @ itunes.apple.com/us/album/mizubaku-adventure-original-soundtrack/1235523055 but from what i can tell it might just be sourced from the same VGM rips with little to no work done to it. can't be 100% certain, but it seems that way.

🡻 INFORMATION 🡻
Kenichiro Fukui's VIOLENT STORM score is nothing short of legendary. using booming lo-fi sounds, Fukui caters to the notoriously difficult to service KONAMI Hybrid Sound Chip (K054539 and other similar models), crafting a delightfully late 80s/early 90s selection of jams heavily inspired by new jack swing. fans of his incredible Einhänder soundtrack will feel right at home despite the hugely different style, as his funky, stuttering sequencing is on full display throughout.
of special note is the incredible amount of voice data here - and not just the ingame sound effects. with tracks like "Who'll be the hero?," "Feel my power," "We are free," and "Nice fight. Congratulations!" featuring actual vocal performances from the humorously credited "VIOLENT STORM'S SPECIAL SINGERS" Jeffrey, Junko, Mayumi
i've worked with this soundtrack twice before, originally remastering the grotesquely reverb-heavy version of it found on "KONAMI AMUSEMENT SOUNDS '94... SPRING" and later on releasing a direct emulated sound rip. not happy with either of these, i knew my LINEOUT.LAND needed to do this one some justice. this version still uses emulated audio, but is heavily remastered, carefully redetailing the stereo imaging from its almost comedically wide arcade original, and mastering the soundtrack to Type II (CrO2) tape to warm up the mix a bit.
i'm extremely happy to bring you what i believe is the ideal version of this awesome soundtrack. oh, and of course, a huge thank you to Paul Robertson for allowing use of his fanart as the cover. there are some bonus alternative covers in the download using graphics from the game if those are more your speed.
thank you, and enjoy!

0:00 HUNGRY GHOSTS 「最後の審判」
🡻 INFORMATION 🡻
not much to say about this one. Hungry Ghosts is a phenomenal and engrossing horror game with some pretty wonderful sound design. i've opted to mix this soundtrack together as one track as musical queues are reused throughout. it made more sense to me to present it as a singular piece, especially since track cuts would be a little awkward to place and there would be no reasonable way to title them.
"最後の審判" (Saigo No Shinpan) is a subtitle i've added to this release based on the themes of the game.

🡻 INFORMATION 🡻
i finally grabbed a download of the official Rockman 8 soundtrack yesterday and was listening to it on a walk when i was totally taken aback at how poor of a soundtrack release it is. between bizarre track order, poorly recorded clipping audio, and missing tracks, the overall product is extremely weak. given that the official Rockman 8 soundtrack was released by TEAM Entertainment, the same company responsible for the awful Rockman 7 soundtrack released on the same day in 2007, it's no surprise that it's equally slipshod. taking the extremely late release date into account, the soundtracks they put out feel like little more than cash grabs - which is an absolute shame as Rockman 7 and 8 have two of the strongest soundtracks in the entire franchise.
Shusaku Uchiyama's focus on short, atmospheric pieces and general non-reliance on tropey composition makes for something of an extension of the more tonally evocative work heard in Mega Man 5. the sound set utilized, to me, is one that succinctly encapsulates the 32 bit era.
Rockman 8 is strange in that the Saturn port makes a number of instrument and arrangement changes. some samples use different loop points, some are higher fidelity, some are lower fidelity, it's all really strange. in some cases (Tengu Man being the most famous), music is completely replaced with other (less appropriate) compositions.
also included are the five pieces in the August 4, 1996 prototype of the game.

- PSX & Saturn w/ behringer mixer
- MarkGrass' MM8 debug disc
- Saturn MM8 bonus menu
- FMV tracks from OST
- Japanese themes from "Rockman Theme Song Collection"

🡻🡻🡻 INFORMATION 🡻🡻🡻
a strange soundtrack from a small company responsible for a number of taito-outsourced titles.
this one seems to be attempting to channel a lot of the rave influence that made namco's arcade soundtracks (namely Figthter & Attacker) so iconic at the time. it does so with... mixed results. that's what makes it so interesting. some bizarre sample choices that awkwardly desynchronize when let play out, FM patches that seem to arise out of inexperienced experimentation rather than deep knowledge, and fairly bare bones arrangements all combine to make this a unique, potentially misguided, and ultimately fun listen.
the game is equally "perfectly unpolished" and comes recommended.
this game only has mono sound output, and as a result, doesn't have much breathing room. for this release, i've rendered out each track separately and panned them out. the mix is topped off with a little reverb, EQ, and lightly saturated compression to glue it all together.

🡻🡻🡻 INFORMATION 🡻🡻🡻
an absolute tour de force of compositional skill utilizing the strong rave influence that Devi Kobayashi is known for bringing to the table. Devi was the primary composer on this project, and upon personal inquiry, claimed responsibility for most of the work, including a piece i was sure was not theirs. it is unknown what the other composers are responsible for at this time.
this is my second recording of the Contra Hard Corps soundtrack. the first one was decent, but i've gotten a lot better at this since then. being one of my favorite soundtracks, it deserved another go. this time, i also did some mastering work (reverb, stereo field, EQ) to ensure it sounds its best, and also reordered the tracks to a vaguely "ingame" progression. i hope you enjoy this version of the soundtrack.
