*NOTES:*
*Double Sided Tape:* I prefer the Intertape brand listed above for the reasons I listed in the video, but I have used the other tapes, and they do work, and are cheaper.
*Composite Nailer:* I have NOT used the composite nailer. Usually I only put links to things I actually use on a regular basis, but I want to give a full disclaimer that I have not tried them myself. I would definitely give it a try if I didn't have a vacuum table and was doing sheet goods on a regular basis.
*Blue Tape/CA Glue:* I don't like to use the Blue Tape and CA Glue method anymore, but it is worth trying if you have it around and don't have double sided tape, and you can find the materials locally (Home Depot, etc). I found that a higher quality blue tape works better than cheaper blue tape. Thin CA glue works best, and accelerator
"sometimes" causes issues, so I stopped using it. The glue also doesn't work as well as it ages, even in un-opened bottles.

The file has two CAM toolpath setups; one for the pins cut vertically, and another for the tails cut horizontally. I used really slow toolpaths to avoid chipout; redwood is incredibly soft and prone to chipping out, and I also had a lot of vertical unsupported area when cutting the pins. Download the file to get a feel for how I setup everything; one key point is to make sure the same side is used to reference the joinery.

The alternative way to do an inlay is with a v-bit, and vcarve the inlay. I prefer VCarve inlays when doing a design that will only appear on one side of my project.

Note that this bit has a slight taper; I set it up as a 1/8" bit, and assume no taper. One thing I didn't mention is that this slight taper helps a tiny bit with the fit on these deep inlays. If you use this bit, be sure to push your inlays together from the sides you carved on; this should be no problem, if you follow my instructions on leaving a "skin", as you won't be able to get it wrong.

I built this dust collector closet for around $100-$120, but that is because I milled all the wood myself from downed trees. You could probably get all the wood for a few hundred dollars, and finish the outside with some cheap 1/2" drywall, and still get the benefits of better air inside your shop. The filter was probably $20 or so, but I forget at this point.
What do you all think? Is this a good idea or a terrible idea? Let me know in the comments!
The only materials I bought were the insulation, and the purpose of the insulation was to make it quieter, and is somewhat optional. Sometimes my CNC is quiet enough where I don't feel like I need to use hearing protection.
I still will have to wear my dust mask a bit; my CNC machine kicks out a lot of fine particles when I'm not using my dust boot.
I did measure the dB of things using an iPhone app. With the doors open, I see about 78 dB when pretty close by, and it drops to 72 dB when the door is closed. In the middle of my shop, it is around 67 dB, which is a normal conversation noise level. It's best to avoid prolonged exposures to over 85 dB to avoid hearing loss. I feel pretty confident that the noise level is now low enough where I can leave it running and not worry about hearing issues.

This is my CNC spoilboard design. In this video I talk about the inspiration for my design, why I designed things the way I did, cost comparisons for other options, layout considerations, and then I go over the build process using my machine to make it! I have an Avid CNC, but the concepts are applicable to any wood CNC router. When I was building my spoilboard I had a lot of questions, and I hope this will help answer things, such as "how much spacing should you use for t-tracks?". Should you use T-tracks or T-nuts? A vacuum table or regular hold downs?

***Update***: Jay Bates made a good point about gluing: once you wear through one layer you just glue on another top! So, you don't have to replace all three layers. Another good tip is to use a quality plywood for the bottom layer to get better grip with screws (compared to MDF). Thanks everyone for the comments and ideas!

This is a completely free digital download for a CNC Dust Shoe design that fits various typical spindle sizes. It is designed in Fusion 360 using parameters that can easily be customized. I also included STL files for various spindle sizes. You can print it on your typical home 3d printer, such as the Prusa i3 MK3s (etc). My design goals: thin and skinny to fit between an Automatic Tool Changer tool station without docking the boot, long enough to perform an ATC tool change, removable dust port to use it as a vacuum, and a removable brush hood, with an optional split design. I use it on a HITECO QD-1F spindle, but I know some people have had good success using my v1 design on other spindle sizes. I have an Avid CNC, but this design should work fine on any brand CNC machine. I wanted to make it even easier for people to print, so I also included the pre-setup PrusaSlicer .3MF files which show all my print settings. You can download PrusaSlicer for free and open up the files to see how I set it up for printing.

The VCarve file is all pre-setup with the tool paths to make both the spoon and the fork with either the hibiscus or rose as an inlay. I also have step-by-step directions to make sure it is easy to make. It requires Vectric VCarve 11.5 (any variance, including Aspire will work). I use my 4'x8' Pro Avid CNC machine to carve out these utensils.

Typically two sided machining is done with some dowels for alignment...and this method works great for projects that you can cut through with a single bit. For woodworking, with typical bits, that is about 1-1/4", or up to about 2.5", if your design allows cutting exactly half of each side. For complex shapes, like a bowl, you are limited to your cutter height, unless you do some clever stepping out to avoid collisions. This makes it more difficult to leave space for alignment holes.

I thought it would be more challenging to create an all wood version, and have two sides mate together perfectly with some sort of pattern in the middle. This is what I came up with, and my general process for how I made the box. I experimented with a lot of different hold down techniques in this video, some of which I am abandoning for various reasons. I've settled on some techniques that hold down really well and are consistent; I'll make a video documenting how I do it pretty soon.

This is the file I made for printing these yourself at home in PLA, along with a set of directions on how to print them for maximum strength. * 2L custom made this bit for me; I have been using it for a few projects and it seems quite good. We'll see how long it lasts, but for $20 it is a great deal compared to a lot of more expensive Amana tool bits. I really need the 3" Overall Length for deep carvings like these, and Amana doesn't have one in the 1/4" ball nose size.
I haven't made the Fusion 360 file for this project available, but I am willing to sell it to anyone who wants to give it a try (~$15), I just don't have a set of specific step-by-step directions on all the details of what I do. I generally like to make PDF describing everything that needs to be done so that people will have the best success with a project like this. I've found not as many people are interested in Fusion 360 projects, and like Vectric VCarve more...but it is really hard to create something like this in VCarve due to the machining techniques I use.

For consistently, I highly recommend the Edge Technology Tool Offset Gauge:

Previously, I used to use a piece of paper as my "gauge block", and that did work, but isn't as precise. To use a piece of paper, you jog the machine down until you feel resistance when moving the paper under the bit. You can then hit the Tool Offset button after setting the offset height to be the paper thickness. You could also use a metal "feeler" gauge but at the risk of dulling your bit.

This is how I made my ATC Tool Rack for my Automatic Tool Changer spindle on my Avid CNC. It's made out of wood, using stock I milled from downed trees, so it was "free". I cover considerations on where to place the tool rack on the CNC machine, including how to orient the tool holder or tool fork, depending on how you are using a dust shoe for dust collection (ie: a slim dust boot to fit over the rack versus docking or moving the dust boot aside). I talk about 3D printing a tool pocket rack, and why I didn't go that route. Finally, I show how I machined the rack out of wood, so you can follow along and make your own! I am using an Avid CNC, but you could easily use this same design on any other regular DIY wood CNC machine. This design works well for all ATC spindles: CNC Depot's S30 / S30C, HITECO QD-1F, and other import spindles.

I don't have fluff in the video; I cover what you need, why we do it, and how to do it. I use basic machinist techniques to tram the router for accurate cuts. I'm using an Avid CNC, but this is applicable to any CNC machine. It works if you are using a spindle or if you are using a router. I am trying to accurately align the spindle and do it with some of the most basic machining tools that I already had: a dial indicator and a granite surface plate. This is one of the most in-expensive ways to do it, but also the most accurate!
In the video I keep calling it a "dial test indicator", but this is just a regular "dial indicator". A dial test indicator is a slightly different tool, which could also be used in a similar way. I use a small granite plate, which is very flat. Alternatively you can use a piece of glass, such as some replacement picture frame glass from Home Depot or Lowes. Glass is fairly flat and smooth for dragging the dial indicator along the surface. I also tested a piece of melamine, but it was not accurate enough.

The Edge Tech system is essentially two dial indicators so you don't have to sweep them back and forth. This makes it even easier to tram in the head of a machine. However, I have a hard time paying for a single-use tool that is only useful for tramming, when I can use the more versatile and cheaper dial indicator.

Note on the feet: I said 3/8-16 threaded feet in the video, but I really used these 1/2"-13 threaded feet. Each foot can support 5,000 pounds and only costs $9.07. There are a lot of other options out there, but these had a really heigh strength to cost ratio (cheap for the strength). The swivel is nice for non-level floors. I did find some cheaper ones for around $5 that supported 500 pounds per foot; they probably would have been fine, but I just wasn't sure, so I opted for the $9 ones.
I wish I would have known about the corner brackets before I did my design. I bolted into the bottom of the extrusions, which was difficult. The 4" width steel tubing would have more than enough room to use the corner brackets for attaching the table to the lengthwise members on the top.
The machinist level is accurate to .0002" per 10" of length. So, if I did it right, my entire table should be within .002" of level over the entire 10' length.
Note that the width of the welded table needs to be a tad thinner than the aluminum table so the gears don't hit anything.

No machine could really do everything I wanted to do within the price range I wanted to pay except the Avid! I did think about Stepcraft, as I could have bought a 4x8 machine for around the same price as my Avid, but I thought I could build something better (more powerful Nema 34 vs Stepcraft's Nema 23 and 3hp max ATC spindle). Stepcrafts ball screws are more appealing for accuracy, which is also really important to me. I could go into so many more details about other things I considered: servo vs stepper motors, motor size, drive details, rack and pinion, helical gears, belt driven vs gear driven -- there are so many things to consider. Hopefully this video will help you make some decisions on your own.

I did all the hard work of setting up the file to be carved right, but you'll have to setup the feeds and speeds for your machine.
In this video I walk through all the steps I go through to make the spoon, but my directions go into even more detail. This is a great tutorial and introduction into two-sided machining (2 sided carving). Doing the CNC wood inlay isn't too hard, but it may take some practice to get it just right. I'd recommend isolating the rose inlay and attempting it on a separate piece before doing it on the spoon itself. It took me a good four or five DIY tries before I finally figured out how to do it. The trick was realizing how the Vcarving parameters worked, and how to change parameters based on what I saw. I may eventually make a video on doing that to help people find the perfect vcarving settings.

Note that I use my Tormach PCNC 1100 - this machine is better suited at cutting metal, and the maximum spinning it does is 5140 RPM, which is pretty low for woodworking. You will need to change the feeds and speeds to be more appropriate for whatever CNC Router you are using (Avid, Tormach 24R, Bob's, etc). I'm hoping this project will give you some good CNC project ideas!

This spatula was tricky to make. I went through a few prototypes to get everything nailed down on the basic shape. Originally I attempted to make it out of a 3/4" piece of wood, but that was turning out too flat. So I had to carve it out of a larger 1-1/4" piece to get the proper angles. The inlay was also tricky; I broke my main v-bit and had to take a break for a few months. Eventually I figured out the right details on how to get the inlay to set without any gaps. I've seen a lot of videos on wood inlays, particularly on the theory, but not how to correct issues, as theory doesn't always transfer into reality. Some day I will make a video on how to figure out inlay parameters.
I made this spatula on my Tormach PCNC 1100, so the feeds and speeds are rather slow due to the max RPM of 5140. I'm working on building a new dedicated wood machine, and I'm hoping it will chew through wood a bit faster.

Epoxy notes: I have tried a lot of epoxy brands, and I generally like WiseBond epoxies, but I also have started experimenting with Liquid Glass. Liquid Glass seems to cure a little faster, which moves my projects along a little quicker.

Other keywords: this could be a great box or bowl to make for Valentine's Day! Heart bowls and heart boxes. I use Fusion 360, but you could also use Vectric VCarve Desktop / VCarve Pro or Vectric Aspire -- however, generating tool paths in those can be tricky for a complex shape.

I'm happy to share tips on the settings I use in Fusion 360; comment below with your question! One thing I do is to set the "stock left" to a negative amount in order to make the machined area a little bigger.
If you aren't familiar with Blender, I can send you my blender file to use as a basis for creating your own form mold shapes. They can be re-imported into Fusion 360 to do a cut merge with a basic block size in order to create the final shape to be machined. I'll be sharing the Fusion 360 file pretty soon for this heart bowl...so subscribe to figure out when it is available and make your own.

These are the Epoxy Drip Bowls! This cherry wood bowl an evolution from my last one called the Ink and Oak bowl; check out the related video to see that original design. For these bowls, I wanted to control the shapes that would come through the epoxy. I milled out some glued up cherry to create a 3d bumpy texture - sort of like random little hillsides. I poured epoxy on top and milled out the bowl. These came out fabulous! I’m releasing this video a little early, as it is a gateway video to the next project for mother’s day.
