They march out of the HS 2.5 miles through the town and had a rally on a the Verona Park Bridge.

Last year, Juneteenth was declared a national holiday. Juneteenth is a celebration to mark the end of slavery in Texas in 1865. That state’s slave-holding class withheld the end of slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863 from its Black population. It was not until Union troops effectively occupied Texas at the end of the Civil War that that state’s Black population was emancipated on June 19, 1865.
In recent years, Juneteenth has been embraced by African Americans nationally as a day to celebrate the end of slavery and to unite on the call for Reparations.
Last year, P.O.P. and NJISJ joined forces to push a bill to empanel a Reparations Task Force (A938/S386) study on the impact of Slavery in New Jersey and how the state of New Jersey should address compensation.
In addition to the call for a NJ Reparations Task Force as has already been done by the State of California just recently, this year’s march and rally will also call for Same Day Voter Registration and real Police Reform legislation.

Hedges has authored 12 books, including his NY Times best seller ‘Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt,’ best seller ‘War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,’ which was a finalist for the National Books Critics Circle Award, and arguably his most courageous work ‘Collateral Damage,’ where American veterans were interviewed and disclosed atrocities by U.S. troops in Iraq.
His web-page, TruthDig, (http://www.truthdig.org) whose columns, essays and reviews, make it a very popular critical dialogue vehicle among left of center circles. TruthDig also spotlighted the analysis and activism of P.O.P. chairman Lawrence Hamm in a recent column on the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the protest fury it triggered.

In 2012, Hedges legally challenged the Obama Administration over the constitutionality of a key provision of the National Defense Authorization Act, section 1021 which allowed presidential authority for indefinite detention without habeas corpus. Joined by Noam Chomsky and Daniel Ellsberg in the suit, a federal judge agreed with their claim, only for it to get overturned by the Obama Administration on appeal! He also engaged in civil disobedience in support of an Occupy Wall Street demonstration, particularly targeting investment firm Goldman Sachs.
His subject for the evening is ‘Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality, Resistance and Social Transformation’…

Notes: There are a few spots with sound glitches in the first 5 minutes of this 70 minute video. Towards the end, a couple of clips totaling a minute or so are frozen to protect the identity of a questioner, per his request. Otherwise, an amazing speech by a remarkable leader in a grandiose setting.
Zero Incident of property destruction or violence during March and Rally, which lasted around 4 hours. The mayor joined the march. The police was absent. You could see less than a handful black SUVs and 2 or 3 motorcycle officers mostly far ahead of the march which passed the federal building, split in two at City Hall - BLM remaining at City Hall steps and P.O.P. and others looping way down Broad to the Performance Hall. The two marches then dramatically, as if planned, merged back at Broad and Market, the heart of the city, and went back up Market to West Market and the Lincoln Stature in front of the old court house).
