Growing every day European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-09-23 | Just like the Sun, ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is rising in Cerro Armazones, Chile. With this Picture — or rather: time-lapse — of the Week, you have the chance to enjoy a spectacular sunrise over the largest optical telescope in the world.See the dark spots on the Sun’s surface? In these huge areas, easily the size of a planet, the temperature is lower than on the rest of the Sun’s surface. They can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. The amount of sunspots depends on solar activity, increasing and decreasing in a cycle of around 11 years. A peak is expected in 2025.Here, the Sun is lighting up the ELT construction site, almost like a shadow theatre. The steel dome, in which the telescope will be encased to protect it from the harsh desert weather, is steadily taking shape. Compare this view with the snapshot taken last year and you’ll see just how much progress has been made on the cladding of the dome. Once it’s finished, more than 600 giant pieces of thermally insulated aluminium will be covering the structure. And it’s not just its size that is impressive: the upper part of this colossal construction can rotate 360 degrees!While you can’t see it here, the structure that will hold the ELT’s 39-m mirror is also taking shape at a steadfast pace, as is the mirror itself. The ELT is set to open its gigantic eye for the first time later this decade, and scientists are in for some revolutionary discoveries. Worlds largest optical telescope takes shape European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-07-01 | This drone footage shows ESO's Extremely Large Telescope taking shape in the Chilean Atacama Desert. We can see the insulating cladding being used to dress the dome and the white lattice structure at the centre — now almost complete — that will support the ELT’s 39-m primary mirror. Around the 1:30 mark, we can also see two arc-shaped tracks, currently protected with tan wooden plates, bracketing the white lattice. These tracks will allow the telescope to move in altitude. The grey beams at opposite sides of the lattice, seen more clearly at the 2:15 mark, will support the so-called Nasmyth platforms –– two tennis-court-sized areas where the scientific instruments will rest.Find out more here: eso.org/public/videos/potw2427aCredit: G. A multi-colour view of the young stellar object 177-341 W European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-06-03 | This video shows images of the young stellar object 177-341 W in the Orion Nebula obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Each slice corresponds to a different colour or wavelength. At certain wavelengths, corresponding to the emission of elements like hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and iron, the nebula shines brightly, revealing intricate structures.The VLT is equipped with an adaptive optics facility that corrects atmospheric turbulence, making these images sharper than Hubble’s. The system relies on four lasers to create artificial “stars” high up in the atmosphere, whose twinkling is monitored in real time. The lasers have a wavelength of 589 nanometres, and MUSE has a special filter that blocks the light around that wavelength, as shown in the video, so that the lasers don’t contaminate the scientific data.Find out more here: eso.org/public/images/potw2423aCredit: ESO/M.-L. Night time-lapse at the Extremely Large Telescope | ELT Updates European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-05-21 | This time-lapse shows the dome of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), under construction in Chile’s Atacama Desert, from sunset on 3 April 2024 to sunrise the next day.A multi-layered cladding is being installed over the dome’s steel skeleton — it will thermally insulate the telescope structure to protect it from the extreme desert environment and help regulate the air temperature. Over the telescope, the stunning night sky shows the Milky Way band and the Magellanic Clouds. Largest tip-tilt mirror in the world | ELT Updates European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-05-15 | M5, the fifth mirror on the light path of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), has reached an important milestone: its blank, the shaped piece of material that is later polished to become the mirror, has just been finalised.It might look small compared to the ELT’s enormous 39-metre primary mirror, but in reality, it is the largest tip-tilt mirror in the world. It will move 10 times per second without bending. The NGC 4383 galaxy at different wavelengths European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-04-22 | This animation shows the galaxy NGC 4383 in a myriad of colours or wavelengths of light, observed with ESO’s Very Large Telescope. Different elements like hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen emit light at very specific wavelengths, highlighted here as the animation scans through different colours.These data were captured with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, which decomposes the light from every location within its field of view into a rainbow or spectrum. Zooming into the BH3 black hole system European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-04-16 | This video zooms into BH3, the most massive stellar black hole discovered so far in our galaxy. The black hole was detected thanks to the wobbling it induces on a companion star, seen here as a bright point at the centre of the frame towards the end of the zoom. An inset at the end of the video shows an artist’s animation of what the orbits of BH (in red) and its companion star (in blue) around their common centre of mass look like.The various images shown here were taken with different telescopes at different times, and have been blended together to create this zoom. Record-breaking stellar black hole found nearby | ESO News European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2024-04-16 | Astronomers have found the most massive stellar black hole in our galaxy, thanks to the wobbling motion it induces on a companion star. This wobbling was measured over several years with the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission. Additional data from other telescopes, including ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, confirmed that the mass of this black hole, dubbed Gaia BH3, is 33 times that of our Sun. The chemical composition of the companion star suggests that the black hole was formed after the collapse of a massive star with very few heavy elements, or metals, as predicted by theory.
